The composition is credited to Gene Raskin, who made an English version of the Russian song Дорогой длинною ("Dorogoi dlinnoyu"), written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with text by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. The song deals with reminiscence about youth and romantic idealism. Although the song was popularized in the early 1960s by The Limelighters, Mary Hopkin wrote the best-known recording, which was produced by Paul McCartney and became their first hit single in the UK and second in the US. The song was translated into Spanish (with the title "Que tiempo tan Feliz"), into French (with the title "Le temps des fleurs"), into Italian (with the title "Quelli erano giorni"), into German (with the title "Am jenem Tag") and into Portuguese (with the title "Aqueles Tempos", in the voice of the Jovem Guarda singer Joelma).
