Before this match Andre Agassi tried to talk to Connors about how he met Connors as a child when Jimmy used to visit Las Vegas. But Connors said that never happened and rudely told him to go away. Agassi was quite shocked by Connor's behavior and decided that he will beat this guy in 3 straight sets. And he did just that !

What also becomes apparent to me with these clips is how far superior the commentary was: they were providing insightful, factual content about what the players are doing and why and how. Nowadays the commentary is mostly vacuous hot air, exclamations such as 'brilliant!', 'amazing' that provide no information or merely state the obvious.

Winning points back then required maneuvering your opponent and getting to the net. With modern racquets and strings players can hit winners from anywhere at any time so there's not really much to comment on other than if their winner attempt was successful or not.

The play is just so much more boring now - everyone plays the same, no contrast of styles. Just bang away from the baseline. Hard to commentate on that - sort of like color commentary on paint drying.

What’s so amazing to watch beyond the depth of shot is the almost total lack of unforced errors. Because of the strings and racquets of today, the ball is hit much harder causing more unforced. At this time and for all time before, tennis was a constant chess match, not a pure power game. Something has been lost.

No it wasn't. Those were graphite raquets which is still the primary material used and they were using gut strings which are powerful. The stiffer strings are better for creating topspin when hitting harder but some pros hybrid gut and polyester. Raquets haven't changed much in reality.

Great point on footwork. Unless someone blistered a shot where Jimmy had to just stab at it to get it back into play, if you watch him, he is in the SAME EXACT position to strike the ball every time. All those lil pitter patter steps to get in the same position, are really impressive.

And much more interesting. I can't watch tennis now - every player plays exactly the same, just belting topspins at each other from the backcourt. No strategy. No contrast of styles. The "new game" with the high-tech rackets is basically unwatchable, for many decades now.

I like how this was edited to make it look like the out of shape connors with the lousy chicken wing strokes was ever involved in this match other than to become so annoying that he could hope to facilitate some sort of mental breakdown on agassi’s part. Every tourney you play you run into this guy. Out of shape, crappy mechanics, no pace, using gamesmanship, grunting and stall tactics to try to hang around.
