No.1 seed Jim Courier comes up against feisty No.9 seed Andre Agassi in the quarterfinals of the US Open 1992.
Courier and Agassi own the title to all three Grand Slams played so far in 1992 - Courier triumphed at the Australian and French Opens, while Agassi secured his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.
Agassi arrives having not dropped a single set so far at the tournament, although Courier currently holds the edge in their head-to-head encounters 5-4.
Who will prevail in this mouth-watering quarterfinal between two of America's finest?

Courier got more cheap points on his serve. He's also, (at least at that time) more consistent and had some decent strategy to follow. Agassi back in that day just winged it and made allot of errors. Brad Gilbert showed Agassi the light a few years later and he became a totally different player.... more of a human ball machine/grinder. I remember this match, it was humid as hell that night. Fun match to watch, had a real night match feel to it and these two guys did not like each other at that point. They should put up the whole match... anything from the 92 USOpen really, was one of the better ones on the men's side.

The USTA really needs to get new editors. It’s like. 12 yr old fanboy editing: let’s show 30 points in a row won by agassi. Then we’ll show 1 won by Courier representing him winning the set. There are lots of amateur highlight compilations which manage to reflect the real tone and competitiveness of the match. I’ve probably watched this match 50 times on vhs tape. The real feeling throughout was that courier was the stronger and slightly dominant one with agassi battling hard to stay with him and try to win - which is also why the crowd is very excited when agassi shows signs of his brilliance. But he was battling slightly uphill the entire match, even the set he won.

30 years on I still reckon 92 us open is the toughest and most competitive grand slams you could have ever competed for any generation... Let alone winning it. Look at draws.. on this half you have Courier vs Agassi in quarters, and then Courier and Sampras in semis. On the other half, starting from 4th round Edberg 5-set vs richard Krajicek, then quarters Edberg 5-set against Ivan Lendl, then semis Edberg longest 5-set against Michael Chang. Then Final Sampras vs Edberg. By just looking at those names, you feel being overwhelmed and intimidated... All Grand Slam champions...any of those matches is like Grand Slam Final...top-notch high quality tennis through-out the 2nd week of 92 US Open.

@@guimov1984 I think at 26 Edberg was definitely in his prime. However, I will concede Edberg was never quite the same player again after this tournament. Why? Well, three five set matches, each time having to come from a break down in the fifth set. The longest match ever in the semifinal at 5hrs and 26 minutes. Then the final within less than 24 hours of the semifinal. You can argue that took a lot out of him but he did get to the final of the Australian Open in 1993 and semifinal of Wmbledon in 1993 losing to Courier each time. This is a very timely reminder that, if the USTA continued with this kind of schedule of semifinal and final within 24 hours, we wouldn't see players today winning the US Open well into their 30s.

This match took a lot out of players, especially on Jim Courier both physically and emotionally because they both are elite students from Nick Bollettieri tennis academy, and they know each other's game very well from very young age. In the next round semis the effect of this match took its toll on courier, which let sampras easily winning first 2-set and get upper hand very quickly. Don't get me wrong, Sampras's game seems always have upper hand against courier's but don't forget Courier was No 1 in 92, and was in great shape throughout the year. But in the first 2-set, he made so many unforced errors, which is quite unusual and uncharacteristic for his game.

In 92 US Davis cup team, Courier and Agassi played singles, Sampras, still 1 year away from the incept of his domination of men's tennis, could only play doubles with John McEnroe. On European side, still Edberg(92 us open champion), Becker(92 year-end masters cup champion), Forget still very much at their peak, plus rising stars, Peter Korda(92 french open finalist), Goran Ivanesevic (92 wimbledon runner-up), richard Krajicek, sergi brugera etc. All these facts reflecting how tough and competitive in 92 men's tennis. @@z1az285 Those players obviously a decade or two (or three!) later than Courier. I'd have to disagree strongly about Becker, I don't think he ran around to hit forehands *anywhere* near as much as Courier or Graf, not least because he was primarily a serve and volleyer, was more comfortable getting to the net on a slice backhand, and because he knew a slice backhand was an effective shot against a lot of baseliners.
