@jontakaki5034 жыл бұрын
@@brianlee1417 probably a transition period where the GOAT of the times, Sampras especially, was completely burned out, and young up and coming players took advantage of this generational gap. Had Agassi and Sampras been more into longevity and fitness as are today's top 3, that gap would never had given guys like Hewitt any chance. It would have shifted to the age of Federer and Nadal directly. But in retrospect, who remembers Hewitt except for his racist rants at a black player and black judge line. With his character he was slated for a quick burn-out.
@tommyd73712 жыл бұрын
Give Hewitt some credit - Andre himself does. After this match Hewitt made another 2 grand slam finals, 2 grand slam semis and 6 grand slam quarter finals. Most players would consider that an exceptional career, especially when coupled with his 2 grand slam victories. He may have lacked the big weapons of Andre or Pete, or played with the finesse, power and skill of the big 3, but he was an exceptional tennis player.

A measure of Agassi's consistency at the U.S. Open is the fact that he either reached the final/won it or lost to the eventual finalist/champion at 13 US Opens. Compare that to Sampras and Federer who did it at 10 US Opens.
@datacipher11 ай бұрын
Moronic stat lol. Besides being an absurd stretch to the point of being meaningless - lost to an eventual finalist lol!!! Sampras only played the us open 14 times! Lol. So Sampras 71.4%. Agassi 65%. Agassi’s us open wining percentage 81%. Sampras 89%. # of times Sampras failed to make it to the fourth round = 1 time… the first time he played. Agassi = 6 times.

When CBS used to profit from Super Saturday in which the women's final was sandwiched between 2 men's semifinals, Pete Sampras breezed in his semifinal in the late morning in less than 2 hours while Andre Agassi had to battle Lleyton Hewitt in a marathon baseline slugfest that didn't end until late at night. The very next day Agassi had no legs in his final against Sampras and lost in 4 sets.

Hewitt was pretty good in his prime. Really great serve return and speed (maybe even the best in tennis history before BIG 3 arrival). And against Kafelnikov in SF and Sampras in final he served pretty good, unlike here, against Agassi. Do not underestimated Hewitt, he dereated Sampras 4 times in a row (!) and even if Sampras would not be exhausted against Agassi and Safin, this would be a tough match, maybe Lleyton would win anyway. But... The game in general also improved while Lleyton was at the top. Guys were playing with a little more power, partly thanks to advances in racket technology, but fewer of them were playing into Hewitt's hands. Lleyton liked having a target near to the net, thanks to his speed and counterpuncher skills he destroyed volleyer`s game (Hewitt 9-1 Henman, Hewitt 3-1 Rafter, Hewitt 5-4 Sampras), his game was suitable against serve&volley players, but in his era guys (even tall and powerful like Cilic, Monfils, del Potro) stopped coming to the net and prefered to long rallies from baseline. But Lleyton did not have a powerful shots and he did not win a lot of points from baseline by himself. Hewitt was a victim of his time. If he would be 10 years older and his main opponents would be Sampras, Rafter and other s&v players, he could make even better career than Agassi, but against BIG3 his style was not suitable.
@mellis97294 жыл бұрын
Because his returns, passing shots, speed around the court, and topspin lobs were among the best of all time. Unfortunately for him, Hewitts prime was short lived in part because Federer began dominating but it wasnt all that. Counterpunchers who rely so much on speed become a shell of themselves when losing a half step. Hewitts decline was steep after 05 with a few moments of magic here and there, but aa big fall off the cliff. I remember it being similar to Michael Changs decline, which was hard to watch.
@aesir1ases643 жыл бұрын
@@mellis9729 Agreed and on top of that since Hewitt rellied on speed of his opponent it helped him that the courts were faster but mid 00s onwards courts start to get slower so it was harder for him to generate the power and speed to his shots like others could (Fed, Safin, Nalbadian and so on), and combine that if Hewitt losing a step physically its no surprise he dropped in the rankings. But Hewitt on his prime was simply amazing, he deserves more respect from newer fans.
