Plenty of modern teams have won with their top players all taking the supermax. As they stated and even Mark Cuban has said it once players take a huge salary pay cut and the situation doesn’t work out they already lowered their market value. He did make the smart move. Both D Rose and Joakim suffered catastrophic injuries the following season and a half and Melo would’ve probably been out the league sooner. The logic of “these guys are already millionaires” doesn’t hold weight when the owners are already BILLIONAIRES. This isn’t the NFL. There’s no hard cap, owners can pay the luxury tax if they really want to win too. Miami did it in the LeBron era and KD with Golden State. Championships galore and no pay cuts in sight

Do what’s best for you. If you win a ring, great. The team doesn’t care about you. As soon as it even looks like you’re slowing down they will jettison you. Fans try to frame it as selfish, but 99.9% of them will never have to make decisions regarding millions of dollars. All you hear today is how it is good for the employee to be mobile. “Look for the better position” no matter if it means changing companies or even professions. The days of the 20-30 year company man are over. In everyday life and certainly in sports.

I feel conflicted about this. It seems like sometimes when guys sacrifice for years and stay with a team (Pippen, Zeke, Iggy, etc) it can lead to the team winning if the front office builds a championship caliber team. But the players don't get what they're worth and are often an injury away from being discarded by the team. The loyalty doesn't seem worth it for most

@TheHiphop98 yea but it's not the same as the conversation Iggy, Melo are talking about. Warriors didn't put klay in a box. Iggy was saying the fact that he was a team guy and came off the bench when he should've been a starter ultimately hurt the rest of his career, because warriors put him in the "hes a team player" category. With Klay, though, the dude served his purpose for the warriors. His skills are declining so now it's time to look to the future.

The financial difference between 1st round and second round picks is significant. Isiah Collier was drafted as the 29th pick in the 1st RD. He was only two picks away from the second round. He gets 2.5 million for 4 years. If he was drafted in the second, his contract wouldn't have been guaranteed and he would have to sign for the league minimum or get a two-way contract. 1st round total contract is 12 million. Second round league minimum for rookies is 1 million. I understand why players who were projected to be a 1st round pick are upset when they drafted in the second round.

Part of the reason the Warriors won 3 chips is because Iguodala helped keep the second unit competitive. I'm not sure why he is arguing that decision especially when a case can be made his career was extended for 4 seasons because of his perceived veteran leadership. Then Melo is talking as if there were teams looking to give him a payday after his time with the Knicks. These stars have to understand that it is very rare for teams to build around players over age 30. You may still be getting 20-25 PPG but that's because the system is feeding you the ball, if you're not giving your team a chance to be in the conference finals or better, you get 2-3 tries before they give someone else a chance.

I think guys need to realize at the end of their careers they need to choose wisely. Look at Klay right now, he could probably get 18-20mln a season with the Warriors for another 2 or 3 seasons and he can always be useful and effective for them and possibly get another contract. Or he can sign somewhere else and get 22-25mln for 3 seasons and potentially not be a good fit or flame out within a season, and his career is over or he is buried on the bench. Then he'll be dealing with buyouts and trying to scrape onto any roster. Sure you can feel disrespect, sure you can make slightly more dollars elsewhere, or you can make a little bit less money, be effective, and finish your career where you want to. Heck, take less money and put a no trade clause in your contract. Too many players (like Melo) think it is a mindset thing, no bro, you were clearly not superstar money at a certain point, getting injured, not being effective, terrible on defense (which you can only do if you put up an efficient 20-25ppg a night). At some point you need to realize where you are at in the game, and solidify the position you want to be in to round out your career. A lot of good NBA players just miss reading the room on their career until it is too late.

Wouldn’t have been the best move tho, said he needed that bag first, that was his first big contract, life comes before basketball Brody, his biggest mistake in terms of a ring was not going to Chicago in 2014, he would’ve for sure got a ring with Chicago his first season there, that i remember vividly, still crazy how he chose the bag over THAT specific situation, the Miami situation was way too soon into his career, that was even before Lebron made the official decision to leave Cleveland, because he signed a deal that was longer than brons, bron became a free agent and Melo had one more year left on his contract in 2010-11 which is why he was traded in that 2010-2011 season

So true. What happened to Carmelo happened to Iverson, Westbrook and now its happening to Harden. The all star caliber player who never won it all towards the end of his career is suddenly told he needs to charge his game and its bullshit, because NOW its a problem, now? When that guy has been playing this way for 10 years if not longer. Its a false narrative. Just like this year when everyone, Windhurst, Big Perk, Steven A were talking about Luka wasn't playing defense in the finals. Dude ain't been playing defense since he got in the league. Sorry its a bit late to be bringing that up now. It too is a false narrative. What you see is what you get.

Multiple things can be true. 1.) These amazing men/athletes earned and deserved every penny they made. 2.) Their perspective on money is heavily distorted when you look at millions of dollars as “pennys.” I’d imagine they make so many sacrifices (personal and professional), but I just wish they’d acknowledge they are part of the 1% financially.

To prevent mass tanking by signing vet minimums and for good teams in small to midsized markets to have the best chance to keep their stars. Think what would happen if both LA teams, both NYC teams, Houston, Dallas and Miami, Golden State and possibly chicsgo had as equal of a chance to sign the top free agents as the team they are on chances to keep them. It would be a feeding frenzy.

Fans actively judge players because players have more in common with the fans. Wealthy team owners know this and constantly use that to their advantage. Read KZbin comments, you'll rarely see complaints about owners and GM violations but you'll see "mid" "lame" "trash" "Le[every word]" about players regardless if they make moves for their own benefit or not. Team owners know this, and have a field day with it.

HOT TAKE: A player should be able to take as little money as he wants. Not everyone cares about a "bag". These guys are multi-millionaires many times over. Compromises can be made. However, this logic does not extend to me and you. Also tired of this distinction between players (millionaires) and owners (billionaires). They're all on the same damn team and their squabbles over money, frankly, is pathetic.
@chiggsytube
@chiggsytube Күн бұрын
They are not on the same team. Players are labor and owners are management. You need to understand that your rate is your worth in the eyes of rich people. They think you are a bitch for taking less and they will make sure they treat you that way.
@reiserkeiser
@reiserkeiser Күн бұрын
@@chiggsytube Same class of wealth. They can afford nearly anything with a price. These ppl occupy a completely different strata from the rest of us. Therefore, idgaf about a player whining about not getting 30 million, because 20 is "beneath" him. On the one hand, I have no problem with taking all you can get. BUT it seems way too often the players want us to go "poor so-so! They're ripping him off! Oh no!" on their behalf. I just refuse to do it. You can make it a labor and management thing all you want, fact of the matter is these are EXTREMELY rich and priviliged men, no matter how you slice it.

@@redman6790The distinction between millions and billions is far less than the distinction between millionaires and "thousandaires". They are one. The 0.0001 percent. The generational wealth bunch. The "eff you" money club. Again, I'm not mad about their wealth (the public interest is to thank for it). I'm just not gonna feel sorry for a guy who had to take a paycut. I take a paycut, I'll barely make ends. If they take a paycut? They. Are. Still. Rich. What's killing me is the lack of perspective on this. Layoffs are happening all around us. We're in an inflationary period that seems like it will never end. Most millenials will never own a home. And I gotta hear about some rich person who's bitching about not being MORE rich? Not saying that's what Iggy was doing, but it happens far too often and I roll my eyes.

Theres so much more about what they are not saying, the metrics is something they are not mentiiining because once these metrics go down you might be getting old so look beyond your playing situations and start developing a repoire with the front office and become part of the staff but before you do that behave well and don't go to clubs with a pistol and/or strip clubs, by doing these extracurricular activity may put you out of the running for these few jobs but it seems to me melo cheated on his wife with many girls so he's not going to be in the sports arena talk but there are exceptions like Charles Barkley and shaq
