Worked as a Deputy Sheriff there in Richmond Co. (Ellerbe) for several years. Andre's house was right before where you stopped to look at the barn, which is where Frenchy lived. You'd see André and Frenchy around town all the time. After André passed away, I would go visit Frenchy at the ranch and have a cup of coffee. Great guy. The inside of Andrés house was normal other than the shower and tub. His tub was a jacuzzi.

It's quite sad that Andre had to endure so much pain with his condition. On top of that, people starring etc. even to the extreme of silly frat boys tossing empty beer cans at his head to get a rise from their disgusting behavior. Good on the police for arresting and charging them that day verses Andre. 👍

I grew up in that area as a child and have been to that museum many times. It is first class with excellent displays of local history. Dr. Rankin traveled the world and had vast collections of taxidermy animals from all over the world, fossils, minerals, Indian artifacts, local historical items, civil war artifacts, etc. Just a wonderful collection and museum. My father lived a few miles west of Ellerbe many years ago and we'd drive over to the Food King to grab groceries. One time, Andre came in with Frenchy. It was cold and he was wearing a fur flap cap. You could see his head well above the isles from many isles away. Little kids were flocking around him wanting his autograph and he was so kind and friendly to everyone in the store. We drove past his ranch off Hwy. 73 west of town all the time. That area is simply beautiful with rolling hills, hardwood forest and I've heard that Andre fell in love with the area because it reminded him of his birth place in France. Ellerbe is a classic small-town USA with kind hearted people and good simple living. There is a grocery store, a local owned pharmacy, several convenient stores, a couple garages, 2 or 3 restaurants, a hardware store, couple of barber shops, post office, several antique stores, a laundry mat, feed store, fish market and of course....a Family Dollar and a Dollar General which are more recent additions. Pretty much everything needed for everyday life in rural America. I can see why Andre loved this little town and the locals loved him. Ellerbe also was home to NASCAR and racing legends Benny Parson and John Sears. If you ever come to Ellerbe, stop in at Berry Patch off HWY 220 near Ellerbe for local vegetables, ice cream, etc. then go over to the Dixie Burger for good plate lunches or sandwiches or if your taste is for a little fancier menu there is Ellerbe Springs Inn just up the road off Hwy 22 north beside the rest stop. Be sure to visit the antique stores to which Ellerbe was once known for. Then before you leave you need to visit the Rankin Museum, its a world class museum with many rare and excellent displays. You can't go wrong in Ellerbe!

So happy you got to go out there and take us along. Loved seeing Andre's memorabilia in the museum and the ranch. If it wasn't for his A&E Biography, I wouldn't have known he was from Ellerbe. I really hope they do something for him. For his family, fans and the town. :)

And then the hall of fame induction was just away of making more money out of him for free .they should be paying his daughter every year a tidy sum for using his likeness and name .

Lol I live right around the corner from his ranch. I was born in Rockingham NC and its 15 minutes away from ellerbe NC. My grandparents passed away and I inherited their ellerbe home which is a jump skip and hop from his ranch. Ellerbe is a small peaceful town with lots of history and I love it here. We call it our own little Mayberry. Just like the little peaceful town on the Andy Griffith show. Lol. I'm proud of it and love that we had a world wide famous giant wrestler Andre the giant and he called ellerbe his home also.

Man you were in my neck of the woods! I used to live Ellerbe and now live just a few minutes down the road in Hamlet! I am a part time Historical consultant for the museum and I also sell my Native American crafts in the museum. Interesting story about the cutout, my ex-girlfriend used to work in a graphics department and she remembered her and her brothers working on that Andre the Giant cut out that stands in the museum!

My husband traveled through Ellerbe a lot during that time and actually talked with Frenchy after Andres death. Naturally he was very upset. My husbands cousins wife was one of the nurses that took care of Andre. I went through Ellerbe on my way to Asheboro until the new Highway 220 was built. I will have to make a special trip to the museum.

That was great! Throughly enjoyed that one!! I was a pre-teen here in Lubbock when the wrestling circuit was major big. Used to be held in the Fair Park Coliseum at the fair ground. We had ringside seats right beside the “good guys” entrance every Wednesday night. Those chairs were metal folding chairs often grabbed and used for other things! I’ve see hits that caused sweat to fly out of the ring and cover rows of people. As a kid I was like why are my parents taking me to watch these men in their underwear try to kill each other? I’ve had their hands on my shoulder as the walked in to make a small turn to the stage and run into them coming out of the restroom. They were all nice and smiling to a little kid. Those were the days of Terry Funk Sr., Terry Funk Jr., Ricky Romero and more than I can remember. Saw Andre a few times later on. I’m only 5’ tall and he was massive!
