I worked for a carpet store. It drove the owner nuts because people were obsessed about the perfect cleaner for their new floors. He would tell them to use just water! That wasn't good enough for the new floor owners so he would tell them the company secret! It was a cap of vinegar but only a capful, no more. They went off happy. Floors are not like clothes that need help getting stains out, it's a solid surface and plain water works.

During what I call the Swiffer Reign of Filth people forgot (never learned?) that the whole point of mopping is to keep mopping until the mop water stays clear (or very nearly clear.) That is, we are not just moving dirty water around the floor! We are dumping and refilling the mop bucket for a second or third or fourth pass until the water in the mop bucket reflects the status of the floor: CLEAN. Pre-clean for mopping by wiping up visible spills with a washable rag or wad of paper towels. Then sweep or vacuum up the crunchy sand and dirt and pet hair. Then you mop. Pre spinner, I would use what is now called a "deck mop" and rinse it under running water, wring it out, dip it into the slightly soapy mop bucket water, wring that out, and then pass the now clean, damp, and slightly soapy deck mop over the floor. Literally rinse & repeat. The new removable mop heads that you can wash in the washing machine? Awesome! Passing a dirty Swiffer over your dirty floor is just smearing the floor, the thought of which makes me slightly queasy. Yuck! I also wear white socks around the house and if I can feel anything crunchy or sticky underfoot (or under sock, I guess) I will know. Smeary, sticky, Swiffer floors would make me cringe with every miserable step.
@d1rectorv23 күн бұрын
@@jeanvignesExactly, I love the washable mop pads! I’ve never been a fan of Swiffer. But your process of mopping… why use a rag and paper towels when you can just use a dusting pad and/or extra mop pad? Work smarter not harder!
@CherylHutcheson7823 күн бұрын
@jeanvignes this is definitely true about people misunderstanding the overall for mopping. I will also say your floors are guaranteed to be far cleaner than mine but kudos to you. I can live with the level of clean I manage and the dual bucket helps tremendously!

Good morning, Andrea Jean. I love all your cleaning hints and tricks and I'm 81....still learn something new from you very often. I too use Weiman's products, and my mop and bucket are O'Cedar. I had a Fuller Brush mop for years and years (my Dad sold that brand for awhile after WWII), but the O'Cedar bucket with the spinner was a game changer. Happy hoiday's from Nebraska!! (Okay...I'll start washing the mop after each use. Makes sense 🙃!)
@pamwaldron3504Ай бұрын
I made my own twin bucket system by getting a small plastic trash can (can also use a small bucket with a handle) that fits right down into the water section next to the spin basket. I put my clean mop water in the trash can and dip my mop in that. When I spin out the water, the dirty water falls out of the mop and under the trash can. I dip and spin however many times it takes to rinse the mop head without getting the clean op water dirty. I can refill or empty either bucket as needed. When finished mopping, I rinse the mop head well, spin it and hang it to air dry, then pop it into the dirty cleaning rags bucket for mop wash day. The buckets get rinsed out and air dried, and wiped out with a cleaning cloth as needed.) I have two buckets for mop heads and cleaning rags - 1in the cabinet for clean and 1 by the washer for dirty - labeled CLEAN and DIRTY, of course. I also bought extra mop heads for my O'Cedar spin mop. I can air dry them and collect them after use into the dedicated bucket along with my dirty cleaning rags (non-microfiber) and wash the all together. I prefer to use one mop head per room to be mopped. Yes, it may be overkill. No, I don't mind - it's my obsession. You do you.

As a hard wood floor company owner I don’t recommend any polish on wood. If you need to have a buff and coat done by a company they will have to sand off the polish and it takes a layer off the floor. Your floor can only be sanded about twice.

Love the cedar mop! PSA here: Anyone with real wood, LVP or laminate floors should NOT be using steam mops! My husband has been building and remodeling for 30 years, mainly floors. He says steam mops are keeping him busy replacing warped floors. LVP floors are waterproof in that you spill, wipe up, they're fine. Look good for years. However, the repeated use of steam mops loosens the factory applied glue that holds the underpad on so they warp and moisture can get in there which also causes mold. To keep LVP floors looking good without streaks, use a capful of neutral ph cleaner in bucket of water or just plain warm water.
@JamieAndrickАй бұрын
I've always used a steamer mop on wood floors.. it evaporates very fast and I will continue to do so. We have 100% real wood floors, not engineered hardwood.. we've never had an issue.. and I owned a cleaning company for over 15 years, my clients had real wood floors, it's all I used. It depends on what the sealer is on any hw floor.. most cases, you're cleaning the topcoat, not the wood! (If those floors were sealed properly!)

My dad re-done the hardwoods, floored add our kitchen & other add on rooms. He never allowed anything either but a damp mop and murphys oil soap for wood floors. And orange glow rarely. Only enough for damp mopping. I have to say our floors have held up beautifully. They do need to be refinished soon. But it has been about 30 years now and he did have to redo a few areas in 2007.

OMG--I so agree with the vacuum/mop combo. It actually works well. But cleaning it is a pain. And I don't think I've ever actually gotten it as clean as I would like. I spend as long (maybe longer) cleaning it as I do cleaning the floor. And after I get done cleaning that, I have to clean up from the mess I made cleaning it. I'd rather vacuum or sweep and then mop. It actually doesn't take any longer since, as you said, you just have to snap off the mop head and put it in the wash.

We moved my mother up to live with my sister recently. I inherited her two dogs, making us a four dog, one cat family. I love Ocedar mops. but I agree the two step system sucks. I have two of the older ones, with several heads. I too wash the mop heads after each mop. With a boxer, and an occasionally incontinent Havanese, I mop daily. Spot mop sometimes every few hours. I use a cleaner made for urine odors, and it does well for the odor, not so good for the cleaning. I'm mopping urine and boxer drool. (Should be incorporated into an adhesive) So, I love my O'Cedar mops, like the cleaner I use, but I agree if you don't wash the mop head, you are just spreading funk!

The 2 buckets is the way to go and if your young enough and have knee pads get down with a bunch of towels and hand mop. I used to do this when I was younger about once every couple of months for a deep clean.🙂

I agree with the sweeper mop. It is like a Rainbow vacuum cleaner only smaller - so much to clean when you are "done" cleaning. 🐱

I've always washed my mop head every time. I have several if i need a backup. I was blown away when one of the jobs I used to work at had ONLY 1! I made sure to get a couple more so we could wash and rotate them, and just tossed the old one out entirely. You can't keep a vet office clean with just one mop head.

I was disappointed with the OCedar bucket. After a couple of uses the pumping mechanism broke. There isn't a replacement part so I am left with a bucket and mop. I loved it before it broke and love that the mop head can be thrown into the wash. I did not get a reply from OCedar which was disheartening.
