I could never maintain a discipline system like that, kudos to you for being able to do it. For mine, as soon as she finishes a certain amount of work, she gets a week off. That's been enough of an incentive to get her online work done(I use an online curriculum, because my kiddo learns better that way).

Wow I need your organization bad. I feel I’ve been so disorganized for so long my kids are like me. I hope I can reel them in with your wonderful system. I might have to start out with bits and pieces just for my mind to adjust. Wish I had started this out when I started homeschooling 11 years ago. I have 9 kids (7 homeschooled). I homeschooled my youngest son from 6th-7th grade and since I taught ACE/PACE in a private school in 2000 I understood how it worked. I did a mish-mash of things... some from the public school curriculum, some from Abeka and ACE for his math. We worked those two school years as if we were planning an adventure so he had to research, budget, choose what sites to visit, work out demographics etc... It helped keep him focused. He's ADHD which is why I homeschooled him... culture shock from moving from "small town" America back to a fast pace big city.

I think you should give different bedtimes depending on age. Like 8 o'clock for a highschooler. Then if they are on e they can go to bed 1 hour later. Also do you put in effect how old the child is? So things that's normal for first graders to do would you punish them the same way as Asher?

Hi Andrea, I need to know, do you use the Christian and American flag on a daily routine? On the ACE curriculum, is it one of the requirements to know the pledges for the 2 different flags?

In the school, we did opening exercises part of which included pledges to both flags and the Bible. It's not part of the curriculum per say, but part of the daily routine. At home we have had years where we did it daily, other years we have not. Last year we did it once a week. For me, it's easier to make opening exercises part of the routine when I have a Kindergartener because we already have a routine of things we have to do together before we start PACE work. Otherwise, everyone gets started whenever they are ready in the morning, so no one really gets going at the same time. When we have done the pledges, we've used the small office flags in the little stand and have set them on our TV cradenza.

What books do you use for book reports? Do your children do oral book reports or written?

We use any Literature books that go with ACE's Literature and Creative Writing for their grade. (We don't use the L&CW PACEs.) After that, the kids choose their own books from our personal library. I look at them first to make sure it's an appropriate reading level. In the past I've found book report forms on-line to use. This year I made my own. I have them narrate each day when they read. 3rd grade and up do written narrations, younger kids do oral narrations. The book report is done after the book is completely finished.

It has to be something that is basically their reading level. Once they are in 3rd grade, they have to read chapter books, although they can still have pictures in them like the Magic Tree House series. I'm hoping to mark all of our books by reading level, but that's a pretty ambitious project and I'm not sure if I'll get it done. In the past, I've required a certain number of non-fiction books so that they branch out in their reading. I'm planning to do something like that this coming school year.

Over the summer we do a modified version where we still track demerits and service projects but not school work, book reports, etc. On shorter breaks I usually let everyone be on the highest privilege for the week and then resume once we get back to school.

Hi. I am using this curriculum as well. I know different states require different standards. Does your state require you to undergo standardized testing. Because mine does not but I am having my child tested to see where he places. My question is how well do they test if so?

+Ajah Eason Hi! No, our state doesn't require testing, though we have done it in the past. It's been two years since the last time I did it. We're planning to try the on-line California Achievement Test at www.shopchristianliberty.com this year. In the past, the kids have done above average on their tests, though none of my children are geniuses! :)We've used both the CAT and the Terra Nova. I used ACE growing up and always scored 12+ on the CATs starting in about 7th grade, which means that I answered the 7th grade questions as well as someone who had graduated from high school would have answered them. I assume you are wondering if this curriculum allows you to score well on standardized tests. I know it's been fine in the past, but I can't say if things have changed with the implementation of Common Core.

+Andrea Mills ok thanks... I am a ball of nerves the test is in two weeks... And yes the common core is bothering me. I bought a test practice workbook from carsondellosa.com by spectrum and some of the concepts they covered we haven't even gotten to in our Paces. Such as, figuring area and perimeter in 3rd grade

Ajah Eason Keep in mind that it tests things that are above and below your child's grade level. You should expect that there will be things on the test that you haven't covered yet. Just encourage your kids to think it through and do their best to answer the questions, but not to think they will know everything on the test. It's just a test. In the big scheme of things, it's pretty meaningless, especially if it doesn't affect the legality of your home school. It's going to come and go and life will go on! Good luck!

Do you play the audio of the Bible, 24/7? I am one who doesn't always like background noise, and when I study, it has to be quiet. Seems like it would be distracting to have a conversation with audio running. Just wondering.

It's not loud. We just tune it out if we don't want to listen. Having 10 people in the house is way louder than anything we hear from the audio Bible.

Thomas is a freshman this year, so he doesn't have a bedtime unless he's not up and ready at the appropriate time in the morning. If that happens, he has to go to bed at whatever time his privilege level dictates. Otherwise, the highest level kids go to bed at 9:00 and the lower level kids go to bed at 8:00. (We do it an hour later during summer.)

A PACE is the work booklets in our curriculum. It stands for Packet of Accelerated Christian Education. There are 12 PACEs per subject per grade.

How much computer privilege time do you allow each day if they meet goals?

There's no time limit. Of course, it's somewhat regulated because they have to share computers. They usually take 30 minute turns. In the summer we'll probably regulate it a bit more since there won't be school taking up a good portion of the day. Tom and I were considering having the computers "open" from 2-5 over the summer (the hottest part of the day) to encourage them to spend their mornings and evenings outside. We'll see.

I was in ACE for 7-12th grade and Abeka for 1st thru 6th grade..Christian School...very small..I was happy to not be in public school and worry about fights or drugs etc..downside is..very sheltered from real life and the school was Pentecostal based and I was raised LDS...so that was a clash..My parents only used this school because it was close to our home..which my dad made it clear I was NOT there for religion and any negative remarks about my beliefs would not be a pretty sight as I was instructed to stand up and walk out of chapel...they also were not allowed to paddle..one time they did not honor my parents wishes and my dad came down and actually punched the PE coach! The pastor apologized and the PE coach who was a little slender pedophile looking guy was fired...Still, no lasting damage..Thank God my home life was not run like a school! I am only sharing my opinion which you won't like but I will tell you your kids will put you in the worst nursing home as payback for not drawing a line between school and home life!! All that chart crap..Good Lord..dictator much? I have seen parents like this..(I own a residential home service company, I see families daily..I've watched them grow up)..The home school ones that did not allow TV, normal secular music etc..the kids all left at 18, they were counting the days till they could leave home..they went out, learned about sex, drugs and had fun..got in trouble, recovered, married and only see mom and dad once a year which is one day too much!! No, its not every family but quite a few that I loved as my own I watched them be soo strict only to have the kids hate them for it..One family would not even have cable TV!!! They thought it was of the devil! Sure it's great to teach kids values and to behave but not like the military! Remember the nursing home they may put you in! I loved my mom, she never had to go in one!! She did not raise me on a darn leash!

good question and if your state dosent require tsting how do they get there high school diploma a ged is fine but still isnt a high diploma some jobs don't always accept ged

Actually all jobs accept a GED which is equivalent to a high school diploma. Studies show that homeschooled children actually score higher on most standard tests. They also have less stress and live a healthier lifestyle. The nice thing about our country is that we have choices! We are free to choose how we educate our children and ourselves!
