I think his draft year he was like 160 pounds or something and there were reports he wasnt a team player. Those are always bogus to me. You never know what’s going on behind the scenes. For players that showed his skill level in juniors, it’s worth the risk.

you see a lot of goal scorers in the NHL that gets 30-50 goals and only a few of them are highlight reel...90% of AA's goals are all highlight reel like you said hahaha...all speed + goals.

@Joey Bishop He's definitely faster than Larkin. If they did a true comparison across the league like they used to do, with individual teams having skills competitions (and with no running start like Larkin got at the ASG his rookie year), he'd be right up there with McDavid. Larkin is very fast, but not at the level of Athanasiou.
@InvincibleMegaBeast

If it's just raw speed like sprinters, AA, McD, Larkin...if there's twist and turns, Larkin, McD, AA. McD and Larkin could be close...But I'd say, pure speed AA beats them both.

Looks like his hockey IQ is ridiculous, presence of mind to bank it off the goalie's head or go through the legs when there's a bad angle or make some of these other crazy moves through traffic And his moves in breakaway/penalty shot/shootout situations are sick, he really messes with the goalie's timing and just rips it right when there's an opening

Can we get a video of all of AA's breakaways this year (even those where he didn't score)? I don't know the official stats, but he had to have the most breakaways in the league this year. . . it was darn close to at least one every two games it seemed. . .

I'm the only fan who will say this today at 2:15 PM on February 24th, 2020 on the eve of the trade deadline. Andreas Athanasiou has had a bad relationship with a toxic Red Wings organization. Ontop of having negotiation issues with Ken Hollandazed because of the lack of cap of space due to management issues with signing in the post-CBA era from poor signings, buyout periods, and a plethora of aging and injured veterans, and only be able to be offered barely half or 2/3rds of what AA believed he was worth at the time. Given, how he had very little experience at the time of resigning, many bandwagon Wings fans and many of them full of delusion towards how managing or coaching a hockey team should actually be since they've been pampered to being in the playoffs for 23 years in a raw believed he was not worth that much at the resigning. However, I believed he was worth every penny if we had pulled the trigger at first offer. First, we have to keep players happy in our organization, especially grown through our farm system, since gnabbing generational talent immediately from drafting is hit or miss; second, paying players is a sign of a long-term investment between the organization and the player, in hopes they will decide to become more loyal, potentially cutting costs on future resignings to stay with a great team; and third, he had already shown very few glimpses if not of the potential of how close he could maybe someday become to being just like the Magic Man's apprentice if he learned the necessary skills on offense, defense, and in conditioning to be a successful, two-way forward in the NHL. However, it seems that management on the Wings has yet fucked another relationship with their own player. First, with a terrible GM who is to blame for all the Wings failures for the last decade, and to also analyze and to discover that he is not the reason for any of the Red Wings success EVER as GM of the team. Second, with a terrible Coach in Jeff Blashill. Need I say more about this man? Has he been successful at the NHL level ever since his promotion? Never. Has he been able to push the youth core of Larkin, Mantha, and Bertuzzi from their blooming starts in their careers to the next step? Not at all. And with his constant shuffling of the lineup, his lack of success in practice or in strategies effectively shutting down on opponents night in, night out? It's only lead to regression of this team to be a record worst, and potentially regress the youth as well in their overall potentials. We could have had it all if we had decided to remain patient, and wait out the rest of a regressive year, akin similar to Larkin's sophomore season after being exposed in his rookie year for having immense speed and offensive prowess and being defensively targeted while being paired with Riley No-Scoring All Year Sheahan on a line. No one was screaming for Dylan's head that offseason or year because like I said, this fandom has become so toxic, that it's simply an echo chamber that I find myself arguing today in any logical conversation about this team's direction on the Internet today. Because the overall picture is, Larkin, AA, and Mantha as part of the future core, if developed effectively as players in the NHL, could have been a tandem of monstrosity every game of the year if you are given proper leadership, direction, structured rosters, veteran accountability, formidable defensive corps, consistent goaltending, and competent coaching, who are given a chance for success. With the Red Wings, you're given a one-way ticket to Dead Wings kingdom. I will miss you Athana-see-you-later. When you make your Datysukian dekes on us in our crease, I'll be sad. Because it'll be what the Detroit Red Wings missed out on when they decided to give you away basically. In two years, we'll evaluate Sam Gagner, and those two draft picks we got for you. We'll have to continuously analyze the results of such an investment in a trade by Stevie Yzerman, who I believe and many others do, without question, is the right man to be bringing this team back to success from the delusion of grandeur it suffered from. But until then, I believe getting rid of you is akin to Chiarelli moves like getting rid of Tyler Seguin in Boston. Or worse. We shall see. Miss you.

Holland got saddled with the task of milking the playoff streak and he did a great job in that regard. And he's passing a solid core of young players and prospects on to Yzerman to solidify the rebuild. The Wings invested in AA while he struggled and developed, and there's no chance they'll throw him away now.
