I had one of those Marshall Super Lead 100-watt amps back in the 1970s. I got it 2nd hand for £100. I ended up selling it for about the same price a few years later, which I always regret😢. They are great sounding amps. I've now got an Amp 1 Mercury, which I'm really enjoying, having got back into guitar again a few years ago. Great work, Thomas and Andreas 👏🤘🙂

Hallo Thomas!

The classic channel sounds way better in the Mercury edition, but all the other channels sound better in the old version, at least to my ears... I like that loose feeling in an amp, especially clean. Both the clean channel and the vintage channel sound too tight now - in my opinion. I hope I can find the old version somewhere at a discount ;-)

I take back my words. I have actually tested it in a shop and the new one is definitely an improvement. It sounds much more amp like. There was an unpleasant high in the original one, which held me off buying one and that's gone now. I am seriously considering buying this amp 1 now.

10:42 is soo much better than 10:58. It's kinda changed my mind on looking for a Mercury edition! But then later, Thomas gets a decent 69 JMP sound with the Mercury! So confused! I get the feeling that the old one sounds more like old Clapton and Hendrix lead guitar, but is too flubby for any tight chordal stuff, like if you were playing The Who or Zeppelin riffs?

Hallo Andreas. Wonder if it is not only the difference of a "tube rectifier" but also the shared vs. split cathode, bright cap, etc (i.e Bass vs. Lead) spec that listeners wanted. Essentially the "subtle" JTM vs. JMP circuit changes Marshall made between the two.

Hey man, hope you are well. I have the original amp1 and it serves me well playing blues based music. I’m waiting for the newest metal version to link using a amp-switching to get a full array of sounds for gigs where I have to play blues-classic rock and metal songs. Small is good! The real issue is what is the best comparable speaker cabinet array for such a set up, with best portability.

This seems to me to be exactly like the debate about which is better between the Carl Martin original large box (3-switch) Plexitone, and the newer 'single' button Plexitone. Carl Martin released the newer Plexitone with a tighter low-end and less high frequencies, and a midrange that cuts through better in a band situation. Plexitone fans are divided about which is best.

After spending hours of tweaking sounds with my Amp1 Mercury to dial in Tones of my favorite Amps I can say that you can nail all tones of Marshalls. Even Andrea's said the Amp1 sounds more fat. Thomas just tweaked a bit the EQ. But there are so many options just with the EQ. Bass Middle Trebble set on 333 will sound more thick as 444 or 555 and so on there are so much possibilities... goes on with Volume and Gain settings wich also changes the overall Tone in terms of fatness , tightness, roundness and so on... than the custom Control combined with all the stuff before is the next thausands possibility......AND Than all starts again in the low Gain Mode were the Mercury have the next world again with all combinations. For the few seconds that Thomas used to dial in it's great but if you take time I'm sure you can nail the tone.

Hi Marco, its been 3 months since your review. How do you feel about the unit now? Is it better than the original? Can you get the same sounds from the original and then some?
@napalmhardcore5 жыл бұрын
I'm someone that fantasises about buying things more than I actually buy things. Because there are so many products I'm interested in and I don't make a lot of money, I get option paralysis and end up not making big purchases. AMP1 is one of the products I've thought about buying on and off. I'm kind of sad to see the original discontinued because the vintage channel in particular really appealed to me. The JTM45 is one of my dream amps, but certain things such as the lack of effects loop and having to crank the volume to make it overdrive make it impractical for a lot of situations. I'm kind of surprised you didn't keep both available seeing how you personally prefer some of the sounds of the original, but I suspect it is impractical/too expensive to produce both.
