Angelina was scheduled to record this song on April 22, 2016. Her mother was not comfortable with the lyrics. Angelina re-wrote them on April 21, edited them on her way to the studio, recorded the song on April 22, and released it on April 23. You can see her glancing at the lyrics while singing. Yes. The original lyrics were not appropriate for a 10 year old with its sex and drug references. She is a big fan of Amy Winehouse. She also recorded Rehab but again changed the lyrics to “They tried to make me go to school”

@@andyschnell58 you’re very welcome and thank you for your unwavering support of Angelina Jordan. If I’m not mistaken there were 3 takes of this performance and a couple of partial takes. Angelina wasn’t satisfied with the first take. One possible issue was that She didn’t have enough time to rehearse the new lyrics. I’m not sure if the posted video is an entire take or an edit of more than 1 take. Awesome reaction and you just witnessed greatness! She had arranged the music and the Orchestra and her had an agreed arrangement and when she got home something happened. Her mom thought the lyrics were too dark and said, " if you're going to sing this you need to change the lyrics." In just 24 hours this 10 year old changed the lyrics in a way that the Orchestra didn't have to change one thing on their agreed previous arrangement. That's a genius at work, God Bless!

Angelina is 10 yo in this. Her Mom, Sara Astar, saw the lyrics for the 1st time the previous day. She told AJ that if she wanted to sing the song she would have to re-write the lyrics. Those handwritten notes are from the the day before, & this is the 2nd take because she didn't like the 1st one. She changed a song about drugs into a song about love in less than a day. That is a feat for any singer/songwriter, let alone a 10 yo!

Andrea, your deep experience with this song and your love for it has lead you to create the finest reaction/analysis of this performance. And I have heard dozens of them. FYI, I feel that these lyrics, rewritten by Angelina in the day or two before this recording session, have a special meaning for Angelina. IMO, she is addressing her complicated emotional relationship with Amy Winehouse who she much admires and loves. But that love comes with knowing about Amy's suffering and agonizing life choices. Being the empathetic person she is, she experiences suffering alongside Amy. But she knows she cannot continue in that suffering and be the healthy person she needs to be to carry out her mission to "spread love to the world through my music." So she is able to mix laughter with her tears to bring her back to that love and heal so she can move on in life . . . "I laugh, I cry, I love." What a fantastic process! This song is an almost unbelievable example of emotional intelligence and maturity from a 10 year old. We all have much we can learn from Angelina! 🙏

Thanks for another great reaction to & appreciation of another great performance by Angelina - this time of an Amy Winehouse classic. Angelina's Mom would not let her sing the original dark adult lyrics. So - amazingly, 10 year old Angelina rewrote the lyrics in one day & by doing so changed the entire song feeling from dark & depressing to upbeat & life affirming - (where Amy sings "Black ... black ... black", Angelina sings: "Life ... life ... life"). I believe this stands as a great tribute to Amy from the perspective of a 10 year old girl. Thank you. And may GOD continue to watch over & bless Angelina Jordan.

Angelina's Mother Sarah Astar was not happy with the lyrics of the song as being too adult. She insisted Angelina change them if she wanted to do the song. Angelina finished writing them in the car on the way to the recording. My understanding is that they fit so well that KORK had no need to change the arrangement and that to me is astonishing! Angelina's roots are in Jazz. She been listening and studying these icons from the past century since she was 2-3 yrs old on you-Tube. Also Angelina arranges, at least in part, if not in total, total control of all her performances. She has since she was 7-8 yrs old. She knows what she wants and gets exactly what she wants out of the artists and musicians she works with, many of them who are some of the most accomplished in the industry. ♥👣 Some have referred to this as a rehearsal and I will be happy to be corrected by someone who Knows but I suspect this was no rehearsal but a scheduled performance with recording this performance being the purpose. KORK is the Norwegian National Orchestra known as the Norwegian Radio Orchestra & I don't believe I have heard this performed with this arrangement with these particular members in a live event. She did do a live performance of "Summertime" with the full Orchestra. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have recently learned that KORK actually contacted Angelina for the purpose of this recording plus several others. I'm guessing National Orchestra requested her because of her talent and because she was declared by Norway as a National Treasure shortly after winning Norway's Got Talent. I believe this booking was arranged for the purpose of this recording. It's on her Album as well as others for a project KORK was doing. Thus the scheduled time slot. I'm guessing the arrangement was made ahead of time and each party was working with this. Angelina was informed the night before I believe and had the night and next day before the performance to make the changes. I believe she worked on it that evening but didn't quite finish it. She visited an amusement park on the day of and before the performance. I've watched video of her in an interview at the park with a friend. It looks like they had the whole park to themselves. She finished the lyrics on the ride to the recording session. The remarkable thing is that the lyrics fit so well they had no need to change the arrangement. I believe this performance was the second take. Again I will be happy to be corrected on this if I am wrong but regardless this performance was typical Angelina Magic. Smooth Velvet Perfection! ♥👣If there is a performance and a recording of it I'd love to see & or hear it. I know she did it live a time or two but not with these members and this arrangement. ♥👣

Great reaction Andrea! I’ve loved this video since I first heard it. Made me go back and learn about Amy Winehouse and become familiar with her music. When I compared the lyrics to each song I was shocked how different they were. How many people could write completely different lyrics in 24 hours, fit them perfectly to the original music, and then perform it flawlessly while still capturing the spirit of the original. How old was she?

Whats soo special about this performance,is that her parents first turned down her request to cover this song,they found the lyrics too dark for Angelina. They have always protected her and her little sister,let them be children and have fun. But Angelina embraced Amy as one of her favourite artists,she also gets told by many that she looks like,and even sound like Amy,wich she takes as some of the biggest compliments she can get. So she went up to her room,re-wrote the lyrics and then represented them to her mom,who then allowed her to go through with the cover. I think it was just the next day,she was in the recording studio doing this song. And KORK who she is playing with,is considered being possibly the most prestigious band in Norway for an artist to be working with,as it is The National Broadcasting Orchestra. "The band of the nation" people tend to describe them as,and Angelina has already performed with them several times,wich not alot of artists have. That together with Angelinas freshly improvised lyrics,are the main reasons to why this is her cover with the biggest numbers! Have you seen Angelina-Valerie ? Age 10 i believe. As others indicated her mom saw original lyrics day before and told her she could not perform them as they were, she rewrote them night before,/on the way to studio. She managed to arrange the changes so the band did not have to alter their play. I like what she did. In a making of video i think you can tell she wished she had been able to do the darker original.

Yes, her vibe is Amy, but Angelina altered the dark lyrics to be more age-appropriate. I think she was 11 here, and I believe this is more a tribute to Amy than anything else. You’re absolutely right-the tone, the phrasing, and the overall vibe is what I take away from this. And that’s unusual because even as a young child, Angelina is so good at enunciating the lyrics and making you understand what the song is about.
