I agree with you about the "Act like a senior engineer" statement. It is almost impossible to fake against interviewers who are usually senior themselves. I also have doubts about building things to go on the resume. Building things is great for skills development but I have spoken to more than one recruiter where I live who made it clear that, in the current market, the only experience and skills that matter to them are those gained in a job I.e. commercial experience. In the words of one recruiter - " why should I hire someone with just home learned skills when there are experienced devs looking for work?"

IMO the concepts are what matter. these stupid fucking recruiters dont know dick from shit. I just learn new skills and say I did them in my last job and put it on my resume., I do get tons of interviews. But as you may know the interviews ask you to code some random thing and in my experience in the last year, I have to be perfect. I cannot get stuck at all, if I do, im rejected. Ive never been perfect before in any interview, so I dont know how anyone is getting jobs these days.

This kind of testing is the dumbest shit ever. Coding is only one part and who's not using Google or ChatGPT for simple things. It's school all over again: if you are good at memorizing everything you get good grades. Says nothing about how good of an engineer or developer you are. But it's easy to test

In the north Nevada area companies want SR level people for entry level titles and less than entry level pay.

Well, they're not going to get people this way 🤷♂️

Video Summary: 1. Market Shift to Senior Roles: - Companies prefer hiring senior engineers due to expertise and reduced onboarding needs. - Junior roles are scarce, with job requirements increasingly specifying 3-5 years of experience. 2. Economic and Industry Trends: - Post-2022, companies prioritize profitability, reducing junior hires and focusing on efficient senior teams. - Hiring freezes and layoffs have led to market saturation of mid-level and junior engineers. 3. Actionable Strategies for Job Seekers: - Act Like a Senior Engineer: Take ownership, deepen expertise, and demonstrate leadership qualities. - Build Projects: Showcase skills through practical, innovative projects rather than merely completing tutorials. - Network Effectively: Leverage referrals, attend industry events, and connect directly with decision-makers.

The problem with attending tech fairs is that it, like "host a website" requires money for travel and if you are broke, then you have no capability to attend. Ig assumes a lerson has at least that which can be true but what happens when you are in a brink of homelessness. Then money becomes an obstacle that is difficult to overcome.

I agree that instead of looking into Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix, meta, google new engineers should apply to not so hyped companies. Every new grads wants Roland job in Amazon, Microsoft, google, meta, Netflix.

Yeah, chances to actually get one of these jobs is extremely low. Just found a job description for Data Engineers at Netflix with over 5k applicants. You'll not get this job.

Solution. Senior raise your pay 😂

Not sure if that's the solution 😜

its going to happen organically, there would not be enough seniors to go around at some point primarily because juniors are not getting access to jobs to grow and become seniors in the first place. Seniors start to get many offers and then they negotiate higher salaries, we are going to see high turnover rates in coming years.

The problem with meetups etc. is they assume the person can afford them. Some have attendence costs, most require travel. If you are like me, dead broke and on brink of homelessness (grad 2023, no relatives alive anymore), then you are at the mercy of the limited resources left. Then what?

Sorry to hear. Maybe try to be active more in an online community.

@andreaskayy Trying my best I can. I am the unusual case where I lost both of my parents in 2022, just months before my graduation and I have no other close relatives left alive so I don't have social support networks. It's just me in the big world, trying to survive the best I can. It's why this is so frustrating and heartbreaking, because I love software a lot and I'm passionate about it but I'm running out of time. Here in the Nordic countries, winters don't treat you kindly if you are left to the streets. Thank you for showing empathy though, it means more than you think.

Do you have a computer that you can practice on?
@Jenkkimie11 күн бұрын
@andreaskayy Yeah. I have made several fullstack RestAPI projects that I try to demo to companies. It's just that I rarely get a chance to show them. I've spoken with senior devs, recruiters and CEO's and so far they've told me my portfolio is great. It's just that a lot of companies can't afford to take chances with juniors and many haven't hired new talent for years. This leads to that market saturation. And while I'm better off than most grads are, when 3000 apply for a same job, it's not surprising there are 10 who are even better than I am. It's simply a product of many circumstantial and luckily temporary coincidences piling at the same time. I think years from now we can all look back and breathe from gratitude that all of this is behind us and the markets start booming again.
