Two wonderful singers who sang the Premiere of this opera in Vienna. Vocal technique, color of voices merge perfectly ! I attended a few performances years back - incomparable ! The stage was an explosion with so much extasy, Passion, emotion and temperament !! I miss this caliber of operasingers in our times. Many thanks for sharing these jewels !*****

Vengo a morir deciso..... si fuggire!!!! Fantastic Bellini. Baltsa is awesome as Romeo. But I prefere, instead her voice is much better now, Miss Gruberova.

Gruberova was always cold for such emotional roles. She was good in mechanical roles like Olympia, Queen of the night, Zerbonetta, etc...

Don't forget that Gruberova neither had the Medium Notes nor the emotional singing of the Ghazarian!

@@bibijohns7567 I wasn’t familiar with Gharazian until this recording. I certainly prefer her to Gruberova. But in a way, Gruberova is a better foil for Baltsa. Baltsa and Gharazian approach the music in the same way, and their timbres too are not that far apart from each other. So there is less contrast than with Gruberova.

@@ER1CwC I know what you mean. However this is bel canto. You need passion, emotion, temperament! Ghazarian has it all, plus a rounder, warmer voice for bel canto. Gruberova wasn't an emotional person nor had the Italian temperament for such roles. Her voice was also thinner/sharper. She had high brilliant coloraturas. That was all. Ghazarian has besides the brilliant coloraturas the medium vocal range needed for this type of music. I heard her "La Sonnambula", it was out of this world. Regards !

@@bibijohns7567 I agree! I think if I were casting, if I had to stick with Baltsa as Romeo, I’d go with maybe Scotto or even Freni just get a bit more contrast. But they were both singing heavier rep by 1977, for better or for worse. So yeah ultimately I’d probably go with Gharazian too. Maybe the issue is Baltsa, who was arguably actually a soprano. I love how she sings the role nonetheless.
