in 2004 I was 16 and I took an elective in high school titled "Financial Home Economics" a large chunk of that class was to compete in a statewide competition called "The Stock Market Game" which was a real time interactive US stock market simulator. Each student was given 200K of fake dollars used to invest into the simulator. At the time, I was obsessed with the news of the IPod from Apple and so I fired away and put all 200k into Apple. The competition ran from October 2004 to April 2005. At the time, Apple was trading at a whopping 2.76 a share. I sold it at the end of the game for 5.07 a share for a profit of 167K. I then told my dad "you should consider buying apple stock, they are coming out with some really cool stuff" He said "You are 16, you don't know anything about stocks" I send him screenshots of Apple's stock price from time to time to this day with the "smart ass emoji". Loved your video, thanks for showing 16 year old me the importance of diversification for long term DGI!.

I’m reading “Set for Life” right now and he recommends just investing into index fund and forget about single stocks. I get the diversity aspect, but seeing success like yours makes me think twice. I like the idea of indexes because I don’t want to put research into so many companies when I could use my time finding other ways of growing my wealth. Your portfolio is probably matching the return of an index fund anyways, so why go through all the work of buying 33 different stocks when you could just buy 1 fund and have the same results? Either choose 5 or less stocks you know are undervalued or just invest in an index fund IMO.
