Andrelton Simmons Hall of Fame chances are the theme of today’s video. In a KZbin landscape filled with Andrelton Simmons defensive highlights, we certainly enjoy our web gems, but this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, is about MLB defensive metrics and MLB analytics, particularly Defensive Runs Saved, Ultimate Zone Rating, and Statcast Outs Above Average.
The Andrelton Simmons Angels have exciting players like Rendon, Trout, and Pujols, but Andrelton Simmons is also a star. I believe he has a good chance to make it to Cooperstown. I talk about Omar Vizquel Hall of Fame voting and Ozzie Smith to determine Simba’s chances. I also argue for his inclusion in the discussion of the best defensive shortstop of all time. I start the video with a clip from the Andrelton Simmons Braves days. He really generated some Andrelton Simmons braves highlights.
Enjoy the video!

Inspired by this video, I created an .ICO file of the Astros trash can to replace the regular Recycle Bin icon in Windows. Problem is, I need to figure out an icon to indicate a full bin. Maybe a bunch of Alex Cora and A.J. Hinch heads spilling out of it? Or the words BANG BANG on top of it? Haven't decided, looking for suggestions.

As an aside there's a great video I think MLB produced a year ago called "A Small Island" about how Curaçao develops more MLBers per Capita than anywhere else (incl Simmons). It mentions how the poor quality fields have led to guys being good with the glove bc they grow up taking odd bounces. If Simmons is exhibit A, guys like Andruw Jones, Profar, and Albies are B, C &D

When you mentioned all-field no-hit HOFers, I was waiting for you to mention Ray Schalk and boy, it didn't take long. His induction is NOT a head-scratcher, the man invented many defensive backstop techniques that supposedly had never been seen before, like running during a play to get behind 1B or 3B and back them up. Also, Schalk retired with an impeccable reputation, even though he was a White Sock and was the catcher during the 1919 World Series. Yikes. As for Maranville... yeah, I'll give you that one.

Also, a lot more impressive, he caught 5 no hitters including a perfect game in career. Ngl I hated the fact he was in before I read that

Yeah but even all field no-hit players like Yadier Molina and Ozzie Smith still have at least 2,000 hits. If he can stay healthy enough for that long and accrue 2,000 hits then sure he’s in.

There isn't much value in them anymore. If you're scoring the same number of runs, it doesn't matter if you've moved up a base in an inning really. It might make for a "sexy" skill to have, but it's technically possible to steal 100 bases & not get knocked in at all, while another player hits singles & doubles & gets driven in 30 times.

@@markwebb7576 SB's are important/good measure of value, (as long as SB% is good too) but the real problem is it's not a fair comparison. Simmons is in a league that doesn't let speedsters run as much, if Ozzie played today, they would've ran him a lot less, especially with his 80% SB rate, good, but not good enough to get the green light as often as he did.

Without your channel, I probably wouldn't have ever learned about OPS+, ERA+, etc... Also I'm interested to see what Simmons future holds, he is a FA after 2020, and you would think if the angels were going to extend him he would have already been extended in the past two offseasons during the extension hype period. They might let him go, they seem to be moving away from their defensive focus with players like Upton, letting Calhoun go, and getting Castro over Maldonado. I'm sure many other teams will be interested in him though!

The Streak (a novelty stat) and his 1983 and 1991 MVP seasons. He was a so-so fielder, decent hitter, and definitely the most overrated player in the HOF after Derek Jeter (at least Jeter was a better hitter even if his power stats weren't as average as Cal's). But I'd love to see video from someone who understands baseball better than me.
@jasonganslaw7314
@jasonganslaw7314 3 жыл бұрын
Kylie McInnes If you ignore Cal’s streak and Jeter’s postseason stuff, two things that really shouldn’t be taken into account when comparing players fairly, Jeter is a superior hitter than Cal, but Cal is an elite fielder while Jeter is way, way, way below average
@JimBrownski
@JimBrownski 3 жыл бұрын
Better fielder than Jeter. Nowhere near the hitter. But being there every day he is incomparable. Being there got him 3000 hots and 400 plus Homer's. Things never done by a shortstop before him. I'm grew up an Os fan in DC pre Nats arrival. His value is he made me a Baseball fan and someone who doesn't miss a day of work 💯
@JimBrownski
@JimBrownski 3 жыл бұрын
You ask any player in MLB history to play 162 games a year for 16 years and not miss a day. Barely missed any INNINGS in 16 years too. Which is also.his flaw. Played through injury when he didn't have to. Impacted his swing ( nobody changed stances like Cal!) And his numbers
