Having worked with academics I would say that many of them have never completely grown up. Some students will manage to do this but others will remain 'daft as brushes.' Just because someone is academic doesn't mean that they have common sense. Often they don't.

Agree with this. Perhaps the reason is the value of children these days. Most people only have one or two, so parents are naturally overprotective... "helicopter parenting". Kids always have an authority to appeal to these days and don't grow up tough enough and are incapable of sorting things out for themselves. In this and Mr. Doyle's interview of Peter Boghosian, he doesn't seem to understand that the Woke don't want to debate or discuss the issue. They want you to shut up. And discussion would invariably result in their opponent pointing to facts, logic or reason. Because the Woke belief system isn't based or supported by such things, hearing them from an interlocutor would cause them cognitive dissonance. Because that is a very uncomfortable state in which to be, the way they avoid it is to shut up their opponents. So no matter how genteel you might be with them in a discussion is utterly irrelevant. Just the act of disagreement is, in their minds, so threatening to their psyches, it must be avoided by any means necessary.

I remember going to university and being taught how to critically think and research and how to accept that other points of view may have merit be valid. I don't however remember going to university and being taught what to think, to have a closed mind and be unaccepting of any other viewpoint. Universities were once learning environments where ideas get discussed, debated and examined in detail even if those ideas don't fit with what we think we know. Advancing understanding needs discussion and conversation, sometimes about subjects we don't like or find offensive, but without that conversation there's no understanding just conjecture and disagreement. When did people become so closed minded and so scared that they might be wrong that they literally try to stop anything that goes against the narrative they follow.

Stock is not the last word and probably has theoretical vulnerabilities... I personally don't think she fully understands the experience of her opposition. But she'll never be properly criticized or debated if she can't speak. Your final point about "learning something" through debating is very pertinent, Andrew: and genuine students (rather thah Communist activists) ought to be curious. Back in the very early Seventies, I attended a debate on homosexuality in the Durham Union Society. That debate changed my life. I quit attending the college chapel, and celebrated in a suitable way with a member of the College's Second XV rugby team! Thank goodness for honest debate, and great Speakers.

Any dialogue which permits discussion about transgenderism without requiring that falsehood to be first addressed and empirically substantiated is not only disingenuous, it is actually only facilitating and normalising that lie as an accepted fact.
