Can't lie, I'd actually felt as though Mick leant just the *smallest* bit too heavily into the electronic side of Mickdustrial in the base game's soundtrack. Compared to the work he did on 2016, some of the tracks on Eternal's base OST sounded a little more like The Prodigy than DOOM (not that such a comparison is at all a bad thing, just not quite what I'd anticipated coming out of the same composer as 2016 and The New Order). As a result I appreciate Hulshult returning to the more classic metal style for the DLCs, even though he's been criticised for not sounding *exactly* like Mick did on the original OST (although I'd argue a lot of the key structural components of Mick's work can also be found here)

@@novai6554 I agree with a couple of those songs, but The Only Thing They Fear Is You has its main segment (like the chorus in a song with lyrics) electronic rather than the guitar. It's my favorite song in the vanilla ost, but it leans too heavily on the techno.
@DantesInferno964 жыл бұрын
Uh if you go back you'll see that most of the soundtracks in 2016 were more electronic, compared to Eternal where only major boss fights are electronic. Idk if you could say this is necessarily Andrew after "absorbing Mick's style", or even trying to emulate Mick, although I do think he probably wanted to keep some sort of consistency with how the games have sounded thus far with Mick, like the themes and style Mick put into them (not necessarily purely Mick's style, but one he made for the games). Idk music really so its hard to explain, but this is very Andrew though, it really screams his style, and it works for Doom. But I definitely will need to get used to it because Andrew's overall style is very unique and I can't help but think of Dusk and the other games he's worked on thus far... but this is fire, like amazing stuff and it definitely still works for iD's current vision of Doom!

Andrew is the single person that can equal Mic in my opinion. Although I say Mic is the better musician overall and really made the Doom soundtracks considered “iconic”, Andrew brought his own spin on it while also not diverting too far away from Mic’s work. Mic worked more on artificial synths using sounds such as lawn mowers while Andrew uses more instrumental synths such as drums, bass, and guitar. There are multiple breakdowns in this song consisting of blast beats, alternating riffs, and great bass. I would love to see his next work. So far loving all the tracks.

Hulshult's songs are definitely more "metal" sounding than Mick's work, but i'd argue that Mick's tracks have more memorable segments. If Andrew works on the next Doom game, I'd assume he'd be given more time, and I absolutely expect him to create some gnarly shit.

While as a metal fan I enjoy this I must also say that as a metal fan this is genero as hell... I miss the heavy style of gordon's music. This is like which metal breakdown do you want in your song? Yes.
@LordofDiamondsMetal4 жыл бұрын
Dude, Mick Gordon's music had just as much generic heavy stuff in it. BFG 10k (transparent Meshuggah rip-off). Rip & Tear (nu-metal chugging that wouldn't have been out of place at all on a Slipknot album). Bfg Division (one of the laziest main riffs I've ever heard). I really don't see the difference between the new DLC score and Mick's score. I will concede that the electronic parts are missing something and the tone shaping and mixing could be better.

@@LordofDiamondsMetal Every instrument in these are playing the exact same beats, there's no style, no flair. Yes you're not wrong in pointing out some similarities in gordon's stuff (because lol doom soundtracks have always been SOOO original amirite?) but this just comes across as #10,462 metal band. Again, is it bad? Well the mix is actually pretty bad, yeah, but no it isn't bad. Just lacks style and flair. To each their own though right?
@LordofDiamondsMetal4 жыл бұрын
@@fromash5289 I'd venture to say that's because both Mick Gordon and Andrew Hulshult (who picked up the Doom style where Mick left off) might not know heavy metal music intimately, and therefore don't know about all the tools they have at their disposal to create a truly diverse metal-driven score. I know that Mick Gordon's main experience with heavy music before he did Doom was Meshuggah (he's friends with their guitarist), and Meshuggah is 1) not really a metal band, and 2) very mechanical and not very imaginative or diverse in everything that's not the drumming. I'd really like to see how actual extreme metal would work in a Doom soundtrack, or just any game in general. Like, bring in a death metal band like Suffocation and just let the madness begin.
@fromash52894 жыл бұрын
@@LordofDiamondsMetal I can agree to this. Hell lets get some norwegian black metal or get really out there and just have borknagar do a few tracks. Also I realize I worded my original post wrong. I meant gordon's music is heavily stylized, not that his style is heavy. You can play most of his tracks and I can tell you right away its him even if I never heard the song. He has a very distinct signature imo. These new doom tracks just don't resonate that same way for me. They also don't provide the same dynamic build up during gameplay that gordon's did, but maybe that's because he had much more time to work on those, who knows. I've known of hulshult for awhile now and again while I enjoy his work (quake was quite good and fitting), I can rarely pick up on his signature because imo he doesn't have much of a hook. Again all opinions but happy to have a civil conversation about it.

I've noticed that a lot of people are resuming taking a shit on Mick Gordon because Hulshult and Levy have filled his shoes admirably (as well as the soundtrack release scandal). Let's not forget that, although the DLC soundtrack is better than one could have ever hoped for, Gordon created this industrial djent sound and more or less burned it into the game. We have him to thank for associating this sound with Doom, and Hulshult and Levy to thank for picking it up where he left off.
