KZbin seems to promote the hell out of this one video in particular for whatever reason while sandbagging my other videos in the algorithm. Which sucks because I put so much hard work into my newer uploads. If you enjoyed this video and have the time check out my newer videos too. (:

Through the games it becomes very clear (to me at least) that Andrew Ryan doubts himself and his great project. There are several audiologs where he wonders at what point he had gone wrong. If Rapture hadn't been a pipe dream in the end. With the Civil War and everything he built being torn down to an irredeemable state, he had no reason to live on. He *chose* to die. But he let it be done by his own orders, not that of Fontaine's mindslave. He showed Jack that right now he was only a slave, while simultaneously commiting suicide by the hands of his own flesh and blood. A last show of superiority... a last attempt to convince himself that his philosphy was right all along. Of course he also chose to give his son the tools to follow that philosphy as well. For if his son broke the conditioning and took down Fontaine, he would prove that he was a man, not a slave. And the best ending is the one where you choose to help the Little Sisters because you truly care, not because you feel obligated like when you thought you were helping Atlas and his rebellion. Ryan's biggest mistake is that he entirely ridicules and despises empathy. Helping the Little Sisters after all, is something you don't have to do and is actually less beneficial, yet it is the best ending. The altruism he hates is the thing that fulfills Jack. Ryan's lack of empathy has led him down this path of regret and he died with his ideals intact, but blind to what could have been.
@AnAbsurdExistence6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely amazing input! Jack doesn’t help the little sisters because he has to. Like you said it’s ultimately less beneficial to you if you do but in many ways it definitely is more fulfilling to both the player and Jack himself as described by Doctor Tenenbaun. Unless the player gets more of a thrill from the idea of splicer and nukes running rampant in the world. LOL Great comment brother.
@Tespri4 жыл бұрын
False, he got himself killed because of empathy. Empathy for his child. As stated he could've easily get away with his own life. Also don't confuse altruism with empathy.

Ryan could've gotten Jack to his office and say "Would you kindly smash that radio" stopping Atlas/Fontaine from talking to him at all. Then ordering him to find Tenenbaum and ask her for the cure. He wanted to die with his beliefs intact that the parasites wouldn't reach his paradise. He ultimately did and sent Jack to either get out of rapture or kill Fontaine, to not be a slave and choose to save rapture or leave it until it collapsed in on itself.

I guess I'm slow, but I always figured the whole 'would you kindly' was a direct reference to the lack of choice in video games.. But I think it goes beyond that.. He's saying that the PLAYER most likely is a slave. Specifically to altruism - that all someone has to do is to ask nicely for you to sacrifice yourself on the alter of the state, religion, or community & people will willingly do it. But willingly, not as a choice, but because you were born & raised to be this way.

I like his philosophy, especially the part about choosing your own path & not letting anyone but you shape and dig to way you desire and no need to fear judgement by others of higher power as you are your own.

I feel like they should make a movie about Andrew Ryans life and how he built Rapture then ending with the beginning of the civil war. Then the game would pick up right after.

Just sat down and fully played this masterpiece after years, getting out every piece of content possible out of it, and I must say, the world is crafted masterfully. Every bit of praise this game gets is deserved. The very premise of Rapture itself presents you with a sort of dichotomy, on one hand, this place really is a paradise, full of wonders of science and art, but at the same time, twisted and decadent as a result of letting humans run about and do whatever they please. Inherently, Ryan's vision of Rapture really is a spotless and perfect "Garden of Eden", but once you execute that idea, little (and not so little) cracks begin to show. Masterful work by the writers, on par with Half-Life and the rest of the classics.

You know, that reminds me of the part of when the Serpent in the Garden tempted Eve to eat from the Knowledge of Good & Evil in Genesis 3. (Great chapter to dive into honestly). And since that point, man has been trying to find ways to justify good and evil based on their desires. And there is a spiritual warfare that comes behind it in the minds as well. The dichotomy there is by testing it to see if it is real good or not. If the Creator says no, then it would be best to listen than to rebel, right? Like a child rebellion his father based on the rules he game that child to but he/she didn't like so the child went on to rebel based own his/hers desires. Bioshock somewhat brings a nihilistic approach philosophy by Andrew Ryan when you look deeper into it. Or what Dostoevsky says, "If there is no God, all things are permitted.". (We saw this atrocities in the terrible 20th century for that matter.

I think there are multiple reasons for him ordering you to kill him. 1. He wanted to die a master. If he was killed by someone who willingly wanted to kill him, he would not have been in control, thus dying a slave to someone elses will. By ordering you he stays in control until his dying last breath. 2. He saw you as his son, a younger Ryan. He realised that you were a slave, a disgrace and he aimed to correct that by unveiling everything and stepping out of the picture, out of the way; basically giving you the space you need to become a man and take down his nemesis and potentially saving what little is left (the little sisters) of his city. 3. Maybe he was ashamed and beaten. He wanted to create an utopia, where every man could be free, no parasites longing for your goods. He specatcularly failed, his city became hell on earth and every inhabitant turned into the vilest form of parasites, not creating but stealing, deceiving, running around killing the more fortunate to take theirs. He wanted to step down from his post, from his failure, by killing himself.
