Make your ramps reversible. I did that with my old trailer and whenever they started to sag, I'd flip em. Kept them straight for years.

@andrewkiwi1
@andrewkiwi1 5 жыл бұрын
Andrew you will find the wiring on your pick up isn't corroded but it has a black varnish coating that has to be scraped before soldering. Contractors trailers always take a hiding. You made a good strong trailer and its paid for its self and then some. When they came into the shop we nearly always had to replace the trailer plug as they'd ripped it off the loom. So we made a short loom about 3 ft long and a plug fixed to the trailers frame so when the plug got run over or dragged off it only pulled the short loom from the trailers wiring plug and didn't tear the wiring out of the trailer. That saved a lot of frustration.

If you weld a plate (or strips) of metal on the underside of those trailer ramps, they shouldn't bend as easy anymore. Even better would be a V shaped construction, connected to the ramp at both ends, and in the middle of the ramp, connected to the point of the V. This V construction could interfere with (un)loading in some cases though, although it wouldn't be too bad.

Yup, angle iron must be the most common crap used for load bearing structures. I agree with Mr. Derks. Think of the top part receiving compression and the bottom stretching, on the bottom you have only a 1/2 x 1/4 piece receiving all the stretch.

@timderks5960

That would improve the stability of the trailer, but it wouldn't decrease the load on the ramps, or increase their rigidity. If anything, it would increase the load.

@cavemanjoe7972 5 жыл бұрын
@@timderks5960 It's better to just make I-beams out of 1/4" bar and do cross bracing in two dimensions instead of just one before attaching the top plates. It's a pain in the ass, but they'll last for decades.

This was really creative & informative. You did an excellent job with that trailer back in 2007 and it shows after all these years. Your updated lights and small guards were excellent additions. One of the things I really like is your detailed explanations and demonstrations. Jesse Muller does the same kind of thing as does another really great guy in your area, Tri-County Masonry & Excavating that I recently found who has really gotten active over the last couple of months. Each one does similar work but each has areas where they specialize in different ways. I can't thank you all enough for the educational and pure entertainment value you provide. Again proving why the Hollywood types have lost touch - we much prefer this! Nothing staged with these guys - it's all real life action.

I used to man-handle a crimper like yours until I bought a hydraulic crimper off Amazon a while back. One of the best things I've ever purchased. I got it mainly for doing battery sized cables. But it came with about a dozen inserts for different sizes all the way down to about 16 ga. I think. Soooo much easier to crimp those connectors now and they come out perfectly the same every time. edit: Also, I use an electric heat gun that blows hot air for doing my shrink tube. Got that from Harbor Freight a while back. I think they still have 2 kinds and I bought the more expensive one cause it doesn't need to be connected to an air compressor; it blows it's own air. Way more convenient imo for doing this cause I don't have to always track down a lighter... I don't smoke and I can never find the long ones my wife gets for camping, lighting candles for birthdays and other stuff she uses them for. Besides, when I used to take hers she'd get mad at me for not bringing it back. LOL...

I have owned dozens of trailers over the years of different sizes and for different use. The problem I always had with lights was cheap wiring and it was always a bad ground somewhere. The one I have now is similar to yours (I didn't build it) anyway I ripped the lights and wiring off completely and ran conduit. On top of that I grounded EVERY light where it was mounted to the trailer and no problems since! I was so glad to see you put that trailer tire on there. If that Dodge ever gets put out to pasture, whatever you replace it with I'd like to see it be a 1 ton. Not necessarily a dually, but with some of the jags you pull with that I am in awe, speechless! I know you wont spend the money, but in late 19 ford has a new gas engine coming out they have named "Godzilla"! 7.3 gas engine with an iron block. The camshaft will be IN the block, not on the heads with a 30 foot junk timing chain and hydraulic cam phasers. I've priced a standard cab 8' bed 4x4 XLT and it's $43k. You could probably get it for $40k or an XL for $35k. I think you should splurge and give yourself a break and something nice as hard as you work. Plus it has a 3" 60k lb hitch The body is aluminum, no body rust and you can oil treat everything underneath after you put copper brake lines in it! :o)

Great choice on the clearance lights. Big semi trailers use them. I changed a lot of them and they have a warranty on them, too. Hold on to them when they burn out.

I used to always go into the landfill with my 1 ton flatbed, and lights were always needing repair. I found using a thin copper washer ( I would 1st use a wire brush wheel to burnish the grounding area on the bed, then use some Vaseline or grease between the bed and washer before attaching grounding wire from the running light. And what really made the biggest difference in keeping the lights working , was to solder ALL connecting wires. Hope this was helpful, I admire your talents .

He has heavier duty trailers now to haul the heavy stuff. He could beef up these ramps and this trailer but then it would weigh more and decrease the load carrying capability. Everything is a tradeoff.

CNC Plasma table would be a great asset, you have already supplied clients with steel art, go big 8 by 4 feet. Excellent plasma cutting skills, pretty good circle by hand.. You Tuber "South Main Auto", Avoca, Eric O introduced me to heat shrink gel filled inline crimps, just crimp, the warm-up the plastic to seal. Equipment looking good. Thanks for sharing and best regards from the UK.
