Mounting a new sickle bar mower on a Takeuchi track loader and mowing some trails. Mostly mowing tree branches with the mower in the vertical position.

Several channels I had been subscribed to started putting hot girls in their videos because their content is stale and can't get more subs. Don't get me wrong, I like T&A, but not when they are 'pretending' to do work and dressed like they are going to the mall - not to build a cabin, etc.

Our snowmobile clubs have the sickles mounted on the right side of the groomer sled. The branches fall on top of the drag. I have helped to unload the branches at the groomer shack. They keep a small bonfire going outside to burn the branches. This is mostly at the start of the sledding season. ATVs remove the bigger stuff pre season. Cheers from Ontario Canada. Almost 1 million subs. Congrats.

A million folks following along with, almost your daily life, must be a pretty interesting feeling. Long story short; I’ve been planning and designing machines for 7yrs (at the time I moved back east coast from PacNorWes) sitting in from of engineering software for far too long. And wanted a change of scenery, so decided on a mini x and get back into concrete and construction. Andrew here, I wouldn’t say a guiding light so to speak but, inspiration for me for sure. Mini x led to skid steer led to rebuilding trailers led to dump truck and it’s been a fun journey:-) for me and watching you grow. Just the sheer dedication and patience. Timen, Andrew, I allways enjoy your videos , espacially when you'r fixing or finding a way to make things more comfortable for your special use. I have a metal basket (five foot wide) attached to my mini excavator and at the front side of this basket is also a sickle bar mower mounted. We, in Holland (Europe) have a lot of these baskets (maaikorf) and they are used to clean out ditches from plants and grass. I cut the other side of the ditch, cut the bottom and then the side, where the excavator is standing. All the stuff, that is mowed, falls in the basket and then I let it fall in my dumper. As I have bushes and trees on the other side of my ditches and the branches are hanging over, I am now rebuilding an old chainsaw for mounting at my excavator and cutiing these branches, so that they don't bather me when I"m driving my tractor. I took the combustion motor off the saw and I'm gone drived it with a hydraulic motor.

What beautiful scenery. As a kid on a small 13 acre farm, the driveway was like a quarter mile or longer. All tree's. You could walk down the driveway in summer and hardly see the sun on your face it was so thick. We swung from huge grape vines from hill to hill. I think you would like getting one of those excavator forrestry mulchers. It looks like a 55 gallon barrel sideways. I've seen guy make a clearing on each side of a driveway or do entire fields and they are smooth as butter when done. Almost 7 am here in Ohio. 51F. Summer is over.

Even harvesters loose sickle bar teeth but usually it's rocks that knock them out. 17:52 NO! You don't want bigger bolts. These are designed to shear off rather than bend up the sickle bar. Better leave Cody at home or in the truck since a Sickle Bar is one of the most dangerous attachments to use and his bounding around can lead to tragedy. I remember that i once saw a documentation about a crew that was cutting the trails for the long overland power lines so that the trees dont grow too close to the powerlines. They used a special saw that hang from a helicopter and use 8-10 circular saw blades to cut everything. It was an incredible way to cut all those trees and such. I actually wonder how good such a "saw blade attachment" whould work on a Skidd Steer.

Andrew - I admire your creativity using a sickle bar mower to mow the sides of your paths. A new use for 100+ year old technology. I have several sickle bars and use them regularly to mow my fields. I suspect in the long run you will not be happy with the amount of maintenance that a sickle bar requires. They were designed for hay and grass. Here are some things I have found. • They need regular sharpening. Got to keep them sharp. • They break easily if abused. • They rust easily and need to be stored out of the weather. • I my area the county uses hydraulically driven rotary mowers on a boom to mow the sides of the right-of-way. Might be a better fit for you.

It seems like the best version of the sickle bar would be on a 3-point hitch on the back of a tractor. That way the cuttings would fall in a way that they wouldn't stack up on the deck of the attachment. It seems like a good idea would be to place a second bar in front of the deck so you could cut horizontally in front and vertically on the side with one designed like this one.

@Jehty_
@Jehty_ 3 жыл бұрын
Problem with that is judging by the video he has to constantly look at the sickle bar. If it is behind you that wouldn't work so well. Edit: Would it even work on the back of a tractor? It doesn't stick out to much. So depending on how wide the tractor is, the tractor might push the branches away from the cutter. And if it works, wouldn't the branches still fall on the implement?

@@Jehty_ I grew up working on the farm and we always used a sideboy mower. For those who don't know what that is, it is a bush hog that sticks out on an arm and pivots. We used it to mow limbs hanging over the edge of fields at least once a year and mowing the ditches as needed. I've seen some that go on the front of tractors as well. Imo that's the way to go if you have a tractor.

Don't forget to grease the "pitmen" and cutter bar rail or you will wear them out very fast. Back in the day of horse and Farmall H days, I used and maintained a lot of cyclebars; sharpened and or replaced mower blades and guides. The better than are lubricated, the better they run and cut. I would have loved to have this rig back in my day. Happy cutting. As always, I love you videos.

Thanks for testing these attachments for us Andrew! We cut a ton of brush throughout the season, the mulchers are too expensive for us at this point, this looks like a decent option, probably not cheap but likely a third of the price is my guess. Sure beats walking with a hedge trimmer! I like the visibility of it up front but after seeing the branches piling up I'll look into the 3 point hitch mounted options.

@@smoothlandin True, but you don't have to touch them. Cut them then get to where you want them off and lift the unit up and dump them off. Personally I always liked the mid mount units the town had, those were handy. Mt Haban is a mid mount and works great for this type of work, it only cuts up to 1/2" but it's also only a 5 foot bar. Biggest thing is that you really have to pay attention with it, if you were to lean out just a bit you could run your hand through it.

This type of cutting bar is not much good on grass, it is designed for hedges and brush work. you need close fitting knives for grass. Andrew is using it as it is designed for, we use a small wheeled loader from AVANT with a cutter bar like Andrews, it cuts 50mm (2") with no problem, you just have to learn how to let it cut at it's own pace and then you don't break so many blades. Like any new machine it takes a while to get used to it.

The clue is in the name - its a mower and is meant for mowing grass. You can see at the end of the cutter bar where the swath board is meant to go that pulls the grass away from the cut edge. They are also not meant to be run vertically. It also needs to be lubed - the constant chattering noise is metal on metal and it wont last long like that. Also it would be worth putting a stay bar between the top of the cutter and the body whilst transporting . The constant flexing will just stress and crack the cutter bar. You can get knife segments with a plain edge or a serrated edge but i wouldnt want to cut anything wider than about a fingers diameter. Tractor and flail is what should be used on side vegetation and the brash will fall away behind the machine as you travel.
