Retired helicopter pilot: plenty of room for the Robinson-44, even larger will work, Bell 206/407. Suggest moving your “H” back about 10 from where you are parked at end of video, right in the middle. You want to stay away from overhangs (equipment shed) and power poles / power lines. Slightly steep approach and take off, but looks to be fine. Put up a wind sock on top of the castle to help with wind direction. Have a pilot come out and look, get “their” opinion first. Loved the cutter, ability to rotate vertically was great, looked like some ancient beast !

Andrew is awesome to do 6 months of filming for a single video. With all the machines and projects Andrew works on, it would be confusing to have project series like other youtubers because he'd have half a dozen different projects going at once. It's much more coherent (and work intensive) to edit 6 months of footage into a single video. Andrew is giving himself a lot more work to store and edit 6 months worth of video for a single video, not to mention all the extra adsense money he'd get if he broke it up into individual videos. Watchtime would probably be higher as well; it takes a special type of person to commit one hour (possibly more) to watch a video vs one ten minute video a week for six weeks. Much respect to Andrew.

I have a commercial pilot's license and have flown Robinson helicopters out of Birmingham. This idea reminds me of Davey Allison the race car driver who died piloting a helicopter he just purchased while trying to land at a nearby race track. I knew his instructor, and I was friends with the neurosurgeon who tried to save Davey. Helicopters are expensive to operate and very unforgiving to fly, so please approach this idea with caution and adequate research. I don't want a repeat of this tragedy.

I think this comment should be voted higher up. The danger of flying near mountain ridges in wind and in close proximity to steep cliffs and structures should not be underestimated. Should he turn that pad into a landing site, there would only be one way in and out. He can do it- but he should not rush in to it, especially as a novice pilot. -another pilot

Today the R44 sells for about $475,000, the R22 for about $300,000 and the R66 - a five-seat turbine-powered model introduced in 2010 - for about $900,000. In all, Robinson has made more than 12,000 helicopters, with at least 60% of recent sales going to foreign buyers. Robinson Helicopter Crash History In total, there have been more than 1,600 accidents or incidents involving Robinson Helicopter aircraft, 404 of them fatal accidents resulting in 715 deaths. ~ Just some stats and, they seem a bit higher than other rotor-craft. I too agree with the latter part of your comment. (so please approach this idea with caution and adequate research.) ~~ Davey Allison : On July 12, 1993, Allison boarded his newly acquired Hughes 369HS helicopter to fly to Talladega Superspeedway to watch family friend Neil Bonnett and his son David test a car for David's Busch Series debut. He picked up another family friend, racer Red Farmer, en route to the track. Allison was attempting to land the helicopter inside a fenced-in area of the track infield when the craft nosed up suddenly, then crashed. Neil Bonnett freed the semi-conscious Farmer from the wreckage, but Allison was unresponsive and could not be freed until paramedics arrived. Farmer went on to a lengthy but successful recovery, but Allison never regained consciousness after sustaining a critical head injury. He was pronounced dead at 7:00 a.m. the next morning by a neurosurgeon at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham after a procedure to relieve pressure on his brain proved unsuccessful.[10] The National Transportation Safety Board[11] (NTSB) blamed the crash on Allison's inexperience in helicopters, coupled with the decision to attempt a landing. In early 1994, Allison's estate filed a lawsuit against McDonnell-Douglas claiming the cause of the crash was a failure of the collective yoke on the helicopter. Birmingham attorney Jim Thompson presented evidence from a metallurgist showing that the cast metal piece contained air pockets and paint inside the part, claiming “that meant the part was defective the day it left the factory.” A test pilot reconstruction showed identical results to Allison's crash. McDonnell-Douglas and the Allison estate reached a confidential settlement out of court in early 1996.[12] Thousands packed the auditorium at St. Aloysius Church in Bessemer, Alabama, to pay their respects at his funeral. He is buried near his brother, Clifford, in Bessemer's Highland Memorial Gardens. His organs except his corneas were donated.[13] After the final race of the season, series champion Dale Earnhardt and race winner Rusty Wallace drove a side-by-side Polish Victory Lap carrying flags for fallen drivers Alan Kulwicki and Allison. In his short NASCAR Winston Cup career, Allison posted 19 wins, 66 top-five finishes, and 92 top-ten finishes. He also won 14 poles and earned $6,724,174. He is survived by his wife, Liz, and two children: daughter Krista Marie and son Robert "Robbie" Grey.

I’d definitely consider having a forestry guard for whatever machine you use the shear on. Since you’re always cutting from the back of the tree with no face cut as you’d do with a chainsaw, you’re creating an opportunity for barber chairing with the tree. Most of the trees will be relatively small, I get that, but even that leaning oak you sheared barber chaired. While the shear has some sort of a guard on it, pretty much just a push plate, only takes one bad scenario to have that butt end enter the cab. Just a thought. Enjoyed the video as always.

You should try one of those drum mulchers. I have been watching "upstate brush control" and other channels who use such a thing, and they look amazing at eating through the wood and brush :-) They grind up even big trees. Edit ; mean clippers you got there though :-)

Love a bit of Upstate Brush Control! Their drum mulcher is intense, but given how stony and rocky the ground conditions are where Andrew lives and works I'm concerned it would become a perpetual shrapnel machine!

Love the videos, but that ling looks dangerous as hell to me to taking down trees. Once they're down it would be great handling them, but there's too much of a chance of them barber chairing right into the cab of the excavator as they fall. Stay safe my friend.
@pinwizz692 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. That thing is death waiting to happen. If a tree decides to kick out on you as it falls you don't want to be anywhere near its trunk. Plus if a wind gust huts to top branches it could topple back on that cab. That cab wouldn't be able to take a couple of tons off wood falling on it at the speed it'd be as it excellerated and came down. I think thar is a ridiculous waste of cash.
@SteveRivett2 жыл бұрын
tree felling machines usually have a lot of armor for this reason
@pinwizz692 жыл бұрын
@@SteveRivett. That's true. A skid stear doesn't tho. A tree coming down that kicks backwards is the most serious danger using that contraption. It's why loggers always make sure they have a trip proof escape area behind and beside them as they're making the final cuts. Personally, I wouldn't trust that thing. It's good for stuff already on the ground but definitely not for taking down the trees Andrew was. As a teen I was taught how to log by a pro logger when we were clearing some land for a couple of cabins on my relatives land. Dude was an artist at his job. Very professional and a great mentor.

Andrew, As I am a Helicopter pilot and in answer to your question, Yes you can easily land a Helicopter there, especially one with the rotor diamater and tail length of a Robinson. It would have fit even if you hadn’t cut those trees down. As for taking off vertically being more difficult than a “running start” (to get into transantional lift) that is only a power requirement issue. Very heavy internal or exterior loads for a Robinson recip engine vs turbine engine are significantly different thereby possibly restricting your loads for vertical takeoff. I hope that answered your questions. I’m curious why you want to operate a helicopter there? I’m guessing you want to be able to go from home to your mountain “base camp”? And sling load some equipment up there?

@RetreatfarmFarmvilleVirginia2 жыл бұрын
The only thing that concerns me about a open shear is the lack of tree control versus safety. Even though you may run up on a tree that is strong enough, it may cause you to back away quickly or possibly twist the shear and tractor over so quick that you may not be able to counter it's fall. I'd add a high rack like on the Forestry mulcher attachment to at least keep it off of the cab and you.
