Using a Cat d4c dozer to dig drainage ditches, fill pot holes, and widen a road. Then tailgating stone out of a 1987 f800 dump truck to re-surface the road with a layer of #3, and #2 stone. Using a ford tractor so spread some stone.

Take old loader tires fill half with concrete and put chain through top half of them hook the chains to the f800 and do a few passes the wider the road the more loader tires you use & you can stack the tires for more weight to -you can also daisy chain the tires together to create a more uniform compression-give it a shot Andrew cheap and super effective compared to the cost of a roller. You won't be disappointed. Your a talented guy & I enjoy your vids.

englishstory.net/the-businessman-and-the-fisherman/ While on vacation in one of the southern isles, a wealthy businessman was taking a morning stroll along the beach after breakfast. He arrived at a pier just as a small boat was docking. Inside the vessel was a young fisherman with two freshly caught tuna fish. The businessman complimented the fisherman on the quality of the fish, asking how long it had taken him to catch them. The fisherman said, “Oh, not so long.” Then the businessman asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish, to which the fisherman replied that two fish were enough to support his family’s needs for the day. “So what do you do with the rest of your day?” The fisherman said, “Well, I sleep in, I fish a little in the morning, then eat lunch with my lovely wife, take a nice long nap in the afternoon, and then wander down into the village each evening to drink wine with my friends and have a few laughs.” The businessman shook his head and scoffed at the fisherman. He said, “Look, let me help you. You’re doing this all wrong. What you should be doing is spending more time fishing each day. Then you can sell the extra fish you catch for a profit, which you can use to buy a bigger boat. And with the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several more big boats and start operating a whole fleet of fishing boats. And then instead of selling your fish to a middleman, you can open your own cannery. Then you can control the entire catch, processing, and distribution. From there you can move to New York or Hong Kong, expanding your operations around the globe.” The fisherman thought about this for a moment and then asked how long it would take. “About 20 years.” the businessman replied. “And then what?” asked the fisherman. The businessman laughed. “That’s the best part. At just the right time, you can announce an IPO, sell your stock to the public, and make millions. You’ll be rich!” “Rich, huh? And then what?” The businessman replied, “And then you can retire and move to a small village near the coast, where you can sleep in, fish a little in the morning, eat lunch with your lovely wife, take a nice long nap in the afternoon, and then go into the village to drink wine with your friends and have a few laughs.”

@@Canvideo My driveway is a bit over 1/4 mile and believe me, you need a crown and ditches on each side. Mine is hilly as well. I'm also adding gravel and fixing after heavy rains. Luckily I have some equipment, or it would cost me a fortune. The last big storm last summer washed out a 6 foot deep ditch directly in front of my low water concrete bridge, it was like a raging river all that day. I hate my driveway.
@Canvideo
@Canvideo 5 жыл бұрын
Most gravel roads do not have a rock base and layers of the right gravel topping. After winter, the ground will thaw and the roads get soft. People have a habit of driving in the rut rather than driving the high sides. When the road sets up and dries the ruts almost always break up the crown and form water channels when it rains, washing away the topping. If you have equipment, you will probably find that the less you disturb the topping, the less will wash away when it rains, so filling in the ruts with proper road gravel and packing it down works best for me.

I've found that when you get more than 3 or 4 people on a street, they just assume the other guy will maintain it, then it never gets maintained. Everyone contributes some damage to the street. The other issue is that people inherently only want to pay for "what is theirs" when it comes to distance along a road. On my street I just divide the cost up by acreage; I have twice as much as everyone else, so they each pay half of what I do and I do the maintenance.
@sanfranciscobay
@sanfranciscobay 6 жыл бұрын
If you have 4 people who own the road, does person A who has to drive the shortest distance pay the least and person D driving the farthest distance pay the most? So if a road cost $4,000, how much would each person pay?
@AndrewCamarata
@AndrewCamarata 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you are right. Sometimes that nonsense makes it impossible to deal with. These people were fine to work with. And one rule I usually have when doing shared roads is that I only deal with and getting paid from one person on the road.
@eformance
@eformance 6 жыл бұрын
You have correctly outlined the logical conundrum. There are 2 ways to calculate the upkeep costs: 1) distance traveled 2) percentage of road frontage that you own. Since the road is an easement or at least "owned" by the people who live on it, then I think it more fair to all if everyone simply pays based on the amount of road frontage they own. This is analogous to publicly maintained assets. You pay property taxes based on the size of your property, why shouldn't the same apply to maintaining a private road?
@sanfranciscobay
@sanfranciscobay 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Camarata. It would be a good idea to make sure that the cost of the job is in the hands of the one person who is paying you rather than them trying to collect if after the work has been done. I have found that it is extremely important to ask very specific questions about how you are going to be paid. It's better to spend 30 minutes doing that then trying to collect it from someone who has no intention of paying.
@sanfranciscobay
@sanfranciscobay 6 жыл бұрын

The roller is a good suggestion but compacting the subsurface (made of gravel and dirt) any way you can is the best thing for roads, then whatever you put over it will essentially conform. Maybe you could find an old one for cheap and modify the drum to pull behind the dozer.

At 45:12 in the Demolishing a trailer vid is there a chance the pins might've been damaged or cracked at least while compacting the metal in back of the dump truck? It seemed to operate fine when you dropped that load off but maybe that's where the damage was done. It's just weird that they all gave out at the same time as you mentioned and I hate mysteries lol. Great vid as always.

Nah, the one big one was from lack of grease. It came out once like that years ago. Its fixed pretty good now.

Grading with a bulldozer is not the easiest of tasks. You are comfortable on the seat. I found when a tailgate got too bad it was easier just to take it off, duplicate it and put the new one on and scrap the old. Have you ever tried crusher dust on driveways? Works nice and packs like concrete. Mike

Yeah, that could be topped with the dust. I would not have done that whole repair with dust, the holes would be right back.

I've been doing excavation full time for years now. Before that I was at the post office for 8 years part time as I was starting excavation.

I think Andrew could get twice as much work done if he hired someone to chase him and reset his cameras so he didn't have to stop and do it.

Would a harley rake break up the packed road base better than the dozer just scraping the top off? My potholes seem to be packed all the way around and I have to disturb or bust the entire hole from top to bottom to prevent them from reappearing. Enjoy your work!

Great video. I learned a lot. You always want to hire the guy whose equipment isn’t too nice. Shows a guy who is interested in doing the work efficiently with cost in mind. Beware of the company that shows up in shiny new trucks (chrome lettering) loaded with expensive accessories. This from a homeowner.

that's a weird outlook that doesn't apply to the masses. Perhaps it applies to your personal experience, but some people take pride in their equipment and show it.

I have a question. Since your rock bed is mostly slate, where do you get granite for roadwork? Down in the South, we have very little slate. And lots of red clay :) Good work as usual!

The road came out great Andrew, as expected from you. Gotta get that tail gate done bud, maybe the next rainy day where as you cant work outside? If the Ford goes down that would truly suck.Keep the videos coming, looking forward to seeing the "bridge project" soon!Dave

Does anybody else wonder why Andrew did not use the bobact to do that driveaway, and also does anyone else wonder why they are thinking of Andrew's bobcat as if we actually could do half a good of a job as he does? Amazing job, Andrew. Thanks for the vids.

Our county road crew grades their gravel road 2 times a year. They have yet to remove the washboards and most potholes return in a couple of weeks. I think the county must have ownership in a suspension business.
