Why I Don't Own Many Guitars - My Guitar Collection

After spending years buying and selling different guitars, I learned that owning just a handful of high-end guitars provided me with more value than owning many affordable guitars. In this guitar review, I'll be going over the features and tones of my current guitar collection.
You'll notice that my three electric guitars are very "Fender" in nature, and that's because I grew up playing Stratocasters and Telecasters. I've owned a couple Gibson guitars (including a Les Paul Traditional and a vintage SG) but just couldn't bond with them.
Just like with guitar pedals and effects, I choose quality over quantity. These are the four guitars I own:
Suhr Classic S Antique Electric Guitar (Suhr ML Pickups)
Suhr Alt T Pro Electric Guitar (Suhr Thornbucker Pickups)
Fano Alt De Facto SP6 Electric Guitar (Fralin Pickups)
Collings D1 Acoustic Guitar

That’s a sweet collection. I own 4 too and don’t intend on owning many more for that same reason. It’s like having multiple cars when you can only drive one at a time.

Wow I love your collection, man!! I have a white Fano SP6, along with my American Fender Telecaster, and a Gretsch electromatic. The Fano is typically my #1 choice. They made such good stuff in prior years, especially for being a boutique American company. I love the color of yours!

Great vid! I’m learning the guitar right now, two years in, and I have a Harley Benton, a Tanglewood acoustic and a Lag classical, I bought all as used, except the LAG which was new, but a bit damaged through storage, so couldn’t resist at the price it was.

Love it! Really nice work. I’m enjoying your channel. I have two partscaster teles. One is a thinline cabronita with TV Jones classic filtertrons. The other is a thinline with standard tele pickups (Lambertone Blondies). I also have two acoustics. One is an Eastman AC422ce which has been so good to me the last 7 years or so. The other is a new-ish acquisition a Larrivee 00-40r which is just stellar.

You and I share the magic number of four guitars being optimal. For me it's two electric and two acoustic. Unfortunately I have three more guitars stuffed in a closet that I never play but can't sell because of their sentimental value. I find myself playing my favorite electric (a modded Classic Vibe Tele), and favorite acoustic ( a Seagull Enourage) 95% of the time.

I'll turn 63 in a few weeks - restarted trying to learn electric guitar a little over a year ago. I'm working on the pentatonic scales and the different bar chord shapes (with a side of I really need a systematic approach - but I keep getting distracted by things that sound cool!! Anyway, I currently have a Epiphone Les Paul (an instructor I had was selling some Seymour Duncan p/u's so I had those put in), a Godin Radiator (quite a range of different tones from a H-S-H with coil splitting) and a Peavy Predator (which doubles as a barbell) that already had locking tuners and some "hot--rail" pick-ups installed when I got it.. I didn't really understand what I was getting there - so thought it sounds good in it's own right - I now know I was more looking for that single-coil sound. I really love the sound of your Suhr "Strat" - I'm not sure I'll have the money for one of those anytime soon (though I am putting a Harley up for sale)... the other thing is I'm not sure my playing will ever merit a high quality instrument such as that!!
@andrewclarkeguitar

Those all sound like solid guitars you've got there. The Suhr stuff is so great, but you can get the same tone out of any other decent strat. It's more about your playing and the rest of your rig. :)

@@andrewclarkeguitar They are indeed all solid body guitars … They all have what I’d deem decent tone (I also have a couple pretty decent amps .. a Blackstar HT-5 tube & Roland 20watt Cube) … as I live in a condo I can’t really push either unless with headphones… The varied guitars does give me the opportunity to spend extended time getting to know what I like/don’t like in terms of how each “feels” … I do love those chimy single coil tones (interesting I’ve wound up with guitars that are most or all humbuckers .. I know at my level of playing beyond decent playability… no guitar is going make me any better… As Suhr guitars were feature here, I reflected an appreciation for how they sounded … but I don’t necessarily need one… Thanks for your reflections!!

I have 3 + 1 quality ones as well! Two acoustics. Lowden + Rainsong. Les Paul and a cheap modded strat which I will replace soon. Then that will be a travel guitar. I've been thinking of even narrowing it down to just one acoustic and electric but this is making me think again! Lol Just having a Lowden and a Suhr would be a dream though. Less distraction for me

I have an acoustic dreadnaught, a modded G&L S-500 (Seymour Duncan Cool Rail pickups) and a G&L Espada HH. I prefer quality over quantity and although G&L makes good guitars, I’m looking at graduating to a Suhr, possibly parting with one or both of my GLs.

As a beginner player, for me it's quantity over quality for sure, because to me having 2 different kinds of guitar is a lot better than to sitck to only one. Once I have a sufficient quantity (I'm thinking about 4 guitars in total) maybe I will start thinking about changing them to higher quality instruments. Currently I have a Strat and a Les Paul, and I'm thinking to add a Ibanez Gem junior and a baritone.

Playing for over 30 years off and on. And the only guitar that i bought is also my worst guitar. An accoustic Fazley, it's alright, nothing special. My other guitars are all from my father and atm my main guitar that i use is the guild s-90-nb from '75 :D An acoustic classic nylon guitar, which i actually replaced the snares to steel strings, and yes my guitar is fine, those steel snares are on it for years and the neck is fine. And 2 other electric guitars, one small travel guitar a fender i believe, but i need to fix that one. And one american guitar, that i can't plug in, because here in europe we use 240v. I need some special equipment for it, but that one is a beauty as well, don't know the brand, but it's definitely a unique guitar (rare i think) I will never buy a new guitar. why should i? The ones that i own play just fine and i think i will repair them instead of buying a new one.

Strat guy talking about guitars? I would listen if that would be HSS Suhr strat. This is a real quality all rounder. And that would be my only guitar if I have to chose. But normal choice would be: LP and Telecaster, and HSS strat. For all kinds of music.

Wire your humbuckers in parallel instead of series. They'll have single-coil clarity and no hum.
@PunkMarioBros
@PunkMarioBros Жыл бұрын
One problem I have with humbuckers (which may just be from my bad experience) is that they don’t take pedals too well. My first guitar was a Les Paul style guitar and when I got my overdrive pedal, it sounded so bad but I needed an overdrive for my music so I ended up being an Epiphone Casino which ended up taking pedals really well and the P-90 pickups worked really well clean
@andrewclarkeguitar
@andrewclarkeguitar Жыл бұрын
I agree with that for sure. I feel like single-coils are far more likely to agree with most pedals. With humbuckers I need to be a lot pickier with my choices.
@samuelpeinado1267
@samuelpeinado1267 Жыл бұрын
Disagree… I mean I agree that strat style guitars take pedals well. I disagree that hum-buckers don’t ask pedals well. Humbuckers take pedals great. Especially on stage where I don’t have to worry about the buzz adding extra noise. They are very different though. So an s-style guitar pedalboard probably would sound pretty bad with hum-buckers.
@andrewclarkeguitar
@andrewclarkeguitar Жыл бұрын
@@samuelpeinado1267 That's a fair point! As a player that grew up playing single coil guitars I think it's more of a comfort thing for me. My Suhr Strat's pickups are noiseless, so that's not a huge concern.

Lots of superfluous info here - every sparrow out there knows the steel frets are superior (and stainless steel is of and in itself superior, as a material when it comes to many machines, other than guitars). Alas!, it is also very well known that the steel frets are more expensive, therefore the producers use other materials more often, wherever it is possible . Swapping that old strat for a copy called "Suhr", you gained nothing (steel frets and tremolo bridge of your choice could've been built in any strat). That Collins of yours sounds just like million other medium jumbo acoustics, some of them being much cheaper than this one.
