It's the tacklers responsibility to get his head in the right place - as the attacking player you are within your rights to try to bump/fend off any tackles whilst staying on your feet. I think he's just trying to stay on his feet and get over the gain line as most players would do. Even in a world where he was intentionally battering the opposition that alone isn't really against the rules - I mean, take Courtney Lawes for example - he's made a career out absolutely smashing people. @M'Luds Ladies & Gentlemen here the issue, nowadays sure its a red pretty much every day of the week. I'm not going to argue with that. But in that tournament several challenges like that had gone in and had been deemed just penalties or at worst yellow. You basically had to deliberately drive the guys head into the floor to get a red for a tip tackle at that time. There was so much precedent for what that tackle should have been yet the ref decided to go one step further than anyone would have at the time. Its why the decision was and still is so controversial. You could even argue back in the day they should have all been reds. but the point is they weren't. Tip tackles simply weren't refed that way for Sam to cop a red for what was arguably the least dangerous tip tackle at that world cup (again none of the others were worse than a yellow, most were just penalties) was in my view an awful decision.

The ref had no ability to consult the TMO and he made a call based on what he saw in real time, which is quick and dynamic. Just because it didn’t go your way in one moment, don’t blame the ref - that’s the nature of competition. It was a tight game - why must Scotland rely on the ref to bail them out? Arguably, Scotland shouldn’t have been in the Quarters - they almost lost their last pool game and would have done so had the final try not been awarded as it clearly had a knock on by Laidlaw seconds before the score that put them ahead. Fine margins.
@Bucketheadhead4 жыл бұрын
Deano Zumrap There’s no relying on the ref to bail them out genius, it’s relying on the ref to officiate the game to an international standard. @deansisqoxv204 жыл бұрын
@@Bucketheadhead maybe he fucked up, which is to say he made a mistake. This happens in a dynamic situation. Blame the laws if they are not up to scratch, not the individual. The ref is relied on to officiate the game to the LAWS, not to an arbitrary standard that satisfies the whims of whichever aggrieved nation. What happens if he checks with the TMO, when at the time the laws did not allow him to? Then the Australians would have been the once whingeing about improper application of the laws. Blaming the ref is scapegoating - if you can't win the game without relying on the bounce of the ball or a ref putting his thumb on the scale in your favor, then you're just not good enough.

Tackle like that while an offence was not a red card at that time, and remember that, at that time. There had been other similar tackles during the tournament, many of them worse, that had led to a penalty and at worst a yellow card. For the ref to go straight for a red in those circumstances bearing in mind the rules at the time was pretty outrageous. Would it be a straight red these days? Sure, but not then. And that's the point that needs to be remembered. It's almost as if the referee decided on his own initiative to change the tackle rules without bothering to inform anyone else at all about his decision. Look at the 2019 World Cup in Japan for example. Tackle rules were changed for that but they were announced WELL in advance. Everyone knew what those changes were. In Warburton's case it was one official deciding off his own back to chnage the tackle rules arbitrarily without bothering to inform anyone that he had done so.

There have been far worse decisions than this and it really was not THAT far forward. Sure a TMO would have caught it had they been allowed to refer it to him but I am not sure what kind of Supermen you expect the referees to be - Barnes was a good 10 yards behind the play because of the scrum and the linesman we can see is running full tilt but you expect him to be looking right only? Worse decisions than this have been made, and not all of them against you.

The refs didn't miss it. Barnes over ruled the touch judge report. But it wasn't just that decision. Barnes, usually a good ref, officiated the teams to very different standards that day. Revelling in the victory French media decided to debunk the allegations v Barnes but concluded in the 2nd half alone there were 20+ penalties against France "missed" for a 2 point victory. But the record books will always say "Win France."

Warburton's not English, and while it's not a controversial decision by today's standards, it was very controversial at the time - especially considering Warburton had made two similar tackles in the quarter-final. It always seems to be us northern hemisphere teams getting shafted
@paulthomson22884 жыл бұрын
that's because northern hemisphere teams screw up with poor discipline, fatigue through lack of conditioning, ignorance of the rules, poor strategy and tactics etc.

Or it because the creator decided to show those clips. Perhaps he is from the north?

Did you miss the Bryce Lawrence show? That one-eyed kiwi was the most blatantly biased ref in the professional era.

Paul Thomson yh coz having someone dive for a penalty in a line out is due to “poor strategy.” Are u good?

Will remember that next time Barnes is missing clear and obvious forward passes (from nz). Oh also. Barnes is without doubt one of the best refs (I'm serious and yes from nz). everyone makes mistakes.

The fact that all the aussie players scream 'offside' right at Joubert is an out and out joke

Exactly anyway australia got what they deserved in 2017 when we put 50 points on them and we beat them in their own back yard earlier that year also missing a lot of our top players due to the lions tour
@Karma-qt4ji4 жыл бұрын
Really? You think any other team in the world, including Scotland, would not do the same? How about Stuart Hogg claiming a try in the 6N this year when he knew he had lost the ball? Easy to point fingers at other people, isn't it? PS I never thought I would see the day when I was standing up for the bloody Aussies!
@boom43014 жыл бұрын
Karma its a fair point but this is why we all love rugby isn’t it the sportsmanship side of it puts it above and beyond other sports from wanting to smash each other on the pitch and complete respect off it but when you start screaming at refs its turning into football. And Stuart Hogg has a history of claiming tries he he knew he didn’t score thats the only part i don’t like about him
@jackhiggins50374 жыл бұрын
@@Karma-qt4ji I am not saying the Scots haven't done it or that anyone hasn't done it. It just is an out and out joke whenever anyone screams something like 'offside' when it clearly isn't. Basically every team does it and I wish they just wouldn't
@jacobc5904 жыл бұрын
Jack Higgins First of all the players don’t have replays in the moment and from their angle it would’ve looked offside, secondly every single team in the history of rugby would’ve reacted the same way, stop making hateful comments just because you don’t like the wallabies.

I think at the time it wouldn’t have been a red card but nowadays it would be. I always remember it as being the point at which attitudes towards player safety changed in rugby.

@@montygraham6264 It was a new directive for that World cup. But the reffing of if had been inconsistent with no previous reds awarded.
