Solid routine. Only thing I do different is wait until I add the new oil and cycle it for a short period before I replace the skid guard. It’s easier to detect a leak if there’s a sealing issue with the crush washer. Never used Wix, but I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback. My local euro shop stocks Hengst filters, so I use those.

Awesome video! I love that you showed the required tools and materials before getting into it, and the video was very concise, informative, and well-shot to show everything you needed to see. I do have one thought and it's more of a comment, not really a critique: I serviced a few vehicles now with the cartridge style filters and either aluminum or plastic oil filter housings. For removing the O-ring, I always use a plastic tool like a trim tool, or a wooden one like a toothpick to remove the O-rings sealing the oil filter housing. My reason for this is that with plastic or aluminum housings, prying at the location of the seal can cause permanent gouges somewhat easily if you're not very careful. It looks like you were, but not everyone is and it could become the source of an oil drip or seep for the less gentle among us. Just something to think about when working with new cars since they love to use plastic parts everywhere they can, and those parts do not hold up as well as we'd like to the touch of steel tools. Those of us continuing to care for our modern vehicles on our own are having to learn a whole new skill set of how to be more gentle with our parts!

That little allen keyed drain plug on the bottom of the oil filter cartridge housing is easy to use and takes less time than the oil clean up without using.

I bought a "Premium Guard" off the Walmart app for less than 10 bucks. Idk what a Wix costs but this one looks the same.

Well done. Just purchased a used 2019 with just 22k miles. Oil was just freshly changed so no need to worry about this for several months. The skid plate is a hassle for sure but on the other hand, it seems to provide decent protection for some vulnerable bits. Thanks for this! EDIT: I mean it's not a metal plate so not exactly offroad worthy but mostly it looks like typical German (over)engineering.

It's also done for aerodynamics and does a decent job of keeping dust out of the engine bay. My Atlas has 7K miles and almost no dust on the engine.

I bought a bag off Amazon a couple years ago. When the standard flat washer wouldn't come off the drain plug I just put it back on. I've since done this on several oil changes on several different vehicles and I have had no leaks. The biggest thing to remember is to not cross thread when replacing the drain plug and use a torque wrench. Both of these things will help to not strip the oil pan threads.

Thanks for the info, I always do my oils changes, but the wife just got one an atlas, don’t look that hard except the annoying 14 screws. VW wants 20 bucks for their oil filter.

great video! I have a 2022 6.3l Atlas and am going to do the oil changes myself as well and was thinking about making a similar video. I know it is recommended that it gets changed ever 10k miles, but have you hear from anyone about changing it closer to 5k? Thanks for the video!

No I haven’t. I wouldn’t say I’m that old (37), but every car I had when I was younger required oil to be changed at 3k. I can’t believe how far that requirement has been pushed out by the OEM’s. A lot of hit probably has to do with the development of synthetic oil. Years ago a guy was testing oil in a Honda civic, at 10k miles the synthetic oil tests showed that the oil was barely even broken down.

I've done a lot of digging on the forums especially for VWs and consensus seems to be this: Oil changes every 5k miles are still ideal for the longevity of the vehicle. VW's 10k mile oil change is simply the maximum interval you can go and keep the warranty. There is a lot of speculation that this is not what's best for the long term reliability of the engine and although that's not a thing I've seen proven. What I have seen proven is that frequently changing your oil and filter with quality parts and oil is the single best thing you can do for your engine's reliability! German cars are reliable and well made IF you follow the rules

As a lube tech, I let the housing drip for a while before pulling out the cap, otherwise it splashes everywhere and I'm not about to go home covered in oil or have to clean the floor. I do my struts/shocks/alignment and transfer/diff case checks while it drips so there's no wasted time.

Someone made the recommendation in a comment on my beetle oil change video. I looked into it and they had some good reviews. For the most part, any of the top name brand filters are all near the same quality. I was able to get the wix from Amazon.

Isn’t there still some metal shavings inside the bottom of the filter housing that you should remove and clean out before putting it back together? I mean, I would make sure that housing is clean and free of residue before I put it back together. You have it already in your hands so why not clean it off?

Thanks for the excellent video. Planning to use an oil extractor rather than drain since dealer stripped drain plug. Ever consider that?

Not for this car. I do have an extractor and used it previously on a older beetle with plug issues.

Can’t we just cut 2 big holes in the plastic cover to have access freely without removing those 14 screws? Like Mazda has for instance. I just switched from mazda cx5 to Atlas….

I'm dealing with a slow leak from the oil filter housing after almost every oil change. I make sure that I carefully replace the o-ring into the proper position just below the threads on the plastic housing. I make sure the o-rings on the filter are lubed with a little oil. I torque the housing to the exact spec of 26Nm. Yet it will start to slowly leak from the housing after about 100 miles I've inspected the housing for cracks with a magnifying glass, inspected the threads on the plastic housing for any nicks or gouges. I've even inspected the metal housing and it's threads for issues and can't find anything. Only thing I can think of is I might be pushing the torque just a little bit more than required. Any ideas before I dreadfully go to the dealership?

So I’ve had this same situation happen as well. Gasket changed. Torqued to spec. And it started leaking after 6k miles from the filter change. I used a wix filter and their gasket. I switched back to STP. What did you end up using? When I took everything apart I didn’t see any issue at all. The gasket seemed fine. Etc.

Ecs tuning sells a oem replacement housing cap. I may pick one up even if I make it to the next oil change. I’ll swap it out then just incase it was a defect.

@@AndrewDeVries211 I've been using Wix as well but now considering another brand. I've examined the gasket to see if it's been pinched, flattened or damaged in any way and nothing seems damaged. So now I'm thinking of replacing the housing cap. I'm wondering if I cross threaded the cap or warped it in some way that's not obvious.

Everything done right with the exception of the drain plug crush washer. Crush washers are one use expendable items. One the crush has been made it is spent. It's not made to crush repeatedly. That's why many have that drain plug drip who reuse the flattened crush washer. A box of assorted metric copper crush washers is like 10 bucks on Amazon and you get a factory seal everytime.

Yeah, I somehow forgot to put that front center screw that’s hard one to reach back in. I don’t recall seeing a torque spec for the oil plug but I think it’s 22 foot pounds.

On my Canadian Atlas the oil drain plug is 19mm not 18 mm.

at what milage do I get to change my atlas 2023 oil, am currently at 4k plus and a bit concern bcos its rated for 10k miles b4 change and not quite comfortable with dat .

my Atlas took 7quarts oil is to the top of hash marks

Just add 6 quarts. .2 quarts is like 4 ounces of oil.

That oil filter placement for a catridge oil filter is horrendous. Doesn't even have a drain valve release so all the oil doesn't splatter everywhere. Most german cars have there oil filter housing right on top of the engine for easy removal and replacement. Seems like VW doesn't want to make it easy to DIY anything on your own vehicle.
