Today Flammable Maths and I send each other some maths/physics memes to settle the score on who's the biggest loser, and he pulls out all the stops to convince us it's him. If one of us laughs at the other persons meme, we then have to solve a physics problem.
Check out Flammable Maths part: You Laugh You Math:

For question 6, both of you are correct, you do have to accept that inertial and gravitational masses are equivalent, but past then you have to do the calculation as Jens did and you find that to lowest order the result is independent of the small mass

Is it not that (for the same mass) a smaller object has a smaller surface area thus less air resistance? If there is no air resistance then t_fall is independent of the mass of the object whereas t_fall depends on the mass when there is significant air resistance. Not exactly a mathematical answer though
@tommc1425
@tommc1425 3 жыл бұрын
@@interpird350 I believe air resistance was neglected for the sake of a quick calculation, but in general a true calculation of the fall time will involve both masses. The only reason we normally treat the bodies completely independently and don't use reduced mass μ is because we can treat one of the masses as static. For a full calculation you should include air resistance too, but for that we would need to know more than just mass, you can have small heavy objects and large light objects, so the mass would be one of multiple input parameters.

Add the acceleration of you toward earth + the acceleration of the earth toward you. Techniquely, you substract it. But the y both go in opposite direction. And negatives times a negatives is positive. F = GMm/r^2 |a (tot toward each other)| = |a earth| + |a you|. The force have equal norm. ar^2 = GMm/m + GMm/M ar^2 = GM + Gm ar^2 = G(M+m) ar^2 = GM(1+m/M) a= G(m+M)/r^2. The center of mass is pretty much where the center of the earth is. If m

Q.6 (according to me is) F(due to gravity)=mg ......{eqn 1} well by newton's second law we know that F=ma .....{eqn 2} so substituing eqn 1 in eqn 2 mg=ma m and m got canceled g=a (which is fact) and hence proved mass doesnt play role in it and is considered negligible not for small obj but for all.

Yes but also consider that GPE is something that is shared between two objects so as the small mass moves towards the large mass, the large mass also moves towards the small mass(which is why small mass must be specified such that the movement of the planet towards the mass is negligible)

To get to 1 meter in one second, you have to accelerate at 2m/s^2. After one second the speed is 2m/s and it is zero at the start. The average velocity in that 1 second period is then 1m/s^2.

Hi Andrew, I'm a theoretical physics undergrad considering going on to do a PhD with the hopes of maybe someday being a researcher. I think it would be cool if you made a video talking about how competitive it is trying to get a job in research. I understand that getting a research position - especially as a theorist - is super difficult and competitive and I'm wondering if you have any insights as to how to maximize your chances of reaching that end goal. I've seen a lot of posts on r/physics talking about how unlikely it is to actually get a research position as a theorist and it's been a little disheartening so it would be cool if you could talk a little bit about it.
