"Tools" completely true in my life I suffer from major depressive disorder, S.A.D. and anxiety. I got a job in 2022 at a grocery store as a cashier and I had always been customer service over the phone or similar, people made me nervous. After pushing myself to cashier and try to be social and present, I ended up loving that job. Due to my severe osteoarthritis in both knees I had to resign late this July and started work driving for our transit van, usually 1 - 4 people per trip and I REALLY miss the hustle and bustle of our grocery store and seeing all our locals AND our tourists from all over the world. Seeing faces truly helped me with my depression and helped my anxiety. It's just difficult at first to push yourself to "fake it til you make it". Wishing everyone listening to this podcast absolute happiness.

I loved how Hubermann has the humility to ask if she thinks it is ok to listen to music or books or a podcast while he works… which is actually what many of us do while we study, do something with our hands, clean. cook, walk. run or drive. Great, great conversation. 🙏🏼

I started listening to podcasts because it became difficult to do anything productive whilst comforting my daughter at bedtime. Glad I ended up listening to this one (which I certainly would not have chosen if I knew it was 3 hours), they have kitted us out with an arsenal fit for taking on multiple lifetimes worth of challenges (and enjoying it along the way!) in this. And all for free. I am delighted and also in awe over here 😉 it's a few thousand percentage points more than I expected to learn or have myself enriched by for lying prone with my eyes closed. Thank you.

Several years ago, I tried to keep a gratitude journal for a couple weeks. I was told that this would lead to more happiness (can’t remember if it was a therapist or a book or tube who told me). I think I made it almost three weeks. And I was miserable the entire time I did it. It left me feeling angry and frustrated and resentful every single time I’d jot something in it. Every page was filled with nearly the same things. Over and over and over again. I have a job (I hated my job) I have insurance (from the job I hate) I have a roof over my head. I have legs. I have arms. So, that’s what I’m grateful for today (I’d think looking back at the notes)? That I can walk? I’m grateful I’m breathing. I’m grateful that I at least had money enough for a single yogurt even if I couldn’t have anything I actually wanted. These seem like some very low bars of gratitude. Just what’s the point then? I felt (and still feel) that there HAD to be more to be grateful for. But that was it. Still is.

Gratitude taps into being mindful. You can look at something like a towel and don’t think anything about it or you can actually think about how great a towel is. It’s like she said in this podcast, happiness is like a leaky tire, something like being grateful for towels just puts a little air into it. That’s how I see it anyway. And also if this doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t. Just experiment with different things that could improve your mental health. For me it is having a night routine. I don’t do breathwork or meditation or anything just having structure and reading a nice book before sleep really improved my mood. Take care and keep going 😎

I dont even know you and here there are 10 things you can be grateful for: 1) you have a sound (but very pessimistic) mind. 2) You have internet access, an unlimited tap to humanity knowledge. 3) You can read and write, this makes communicating and even your job possible. 4) you are not being bombarded or your neighbors killed right now. 5) you are not in jail nor in an ICU. 6) you have access to clean water, electricity and shelter. 7) you can go to a library and borrow great books for free. 8) You have the chance to take up on free but great hobbies like running or calisthenics. 9) you are not a soldier in war. 10) you have not committed any serious crime, your conscience is clean

Hi Andrew 🤗 We are the only species on the planet that 'have' a life, al the other species Are Life.. so are we but by 'having a life we create a duality, a seperateness which is the basis for ego which is identification with form, the content, the life we 'have'. True happiness comes with the realisation of being Life. ❤🙏☀️

Andrew, my guess is you have never had a cat. Am I correct? The reason I say this is, like you, I love dogs. I had met cats and they never lived up to dogs. Eventually I got a cat that, like a dog, loved me, followed me where ever I went, loved to cuddle, rub against me and purr. If you met my cat, you would have no idea because my cat would not act like that around you. I have found orange Tabby cats to be the best. My cat was with me through chemotherapy and I imagine I miss my cat as much as you miss Costello. Keith, dog and cat lover! 😊

I was the same way re cats then took my nephew’s in, an orange tabby who was a stray. Then a stray tuxedo came along then a big soft gray tabby and soon this gal who never liked cats had 3 cats and as you said, they were great! Affectionate, all different personalities, very entertaining. All gone now but really enjoyed my 13 years having cats. The last 8 years I’ve been feeding/giving shelter to a big black male cat who just recently I can get inside with door closed but after awhile he gets nervous and wants out. But he too loves affection I just need to be careful as he still doesn’t have total trust, was quite feral originally. Never leaves the yard. (Trapped/neutered him years ago.). Wish Andrew would get a sweet affectionate cat. 😻

Your comment about lacking cravings for social connection is interesting. I believe we do crave it. When I was a young child in the 90s I was always around my siblings, I probably craved my parents interactions though I don't remember much from that age. As a teen, I absolutely craved being with my friends. Every day. It could be all day. If I was sitting at home with no one to talk to, it was pretty unbearable. Fast forward to now, and I crave listening to someone talk (podcasts) and occasionally commenting sharing my viewpoint. It's just that now, there are so many avenues for human connection that are artificial, that feeds that craving for social connection. I believe this is why people are addicted to social media, TV, movies, and video games. They are created as a different formats of human connection, and they can be very addicting.

I like the fact that you lay out parameters that make sense. It helps maintain a sense of control and realistic expectations. A relief from the urge to attach oneself to an outcome. That statement by itself is mind blowing to me as it is something we women tend to fall into. As they say, knowing that you have a problem is half the battle.

Hey Andrew! I love your work and it did a ton of a difference in my life in the last couple of years - thanks! I listened to this discussion with Dr Santos, which was super insightful for me, as a listener of the Happiness Lab as well. One thing that stood out though was your discussion about dogs. I dont have one, and never did. And, with all respect to dogowners, I personally find the trend of humanizing dogs (i.e. taking them to restaurants and cafes, using baby strollers, the stunning amount of money spent on hotels, treatments, pampering, etc) disturbing. I must say it feels like it is filling a void, especially considering that it sometimes feels like it is somehow “competing” with having kids. By listening to this discussion, I thought it might be a way to mimic the happiness mechanisms of parenting, but without thee actual long-term deep commitment it takes. Do you think it is something worth discussing? I would deely appreciate your take on this. All the best!

On gratitude vs delight: i agree 💯 I think we take “gratitude” for granted, we all like to think of ourselves as grateful/thankful, even sometimes in a toxic/minimizing way (my problems aren’t so bad, I’m *just* thankful to be alive/in good heath/etc) vs delight is enjoyment for the sake of enjoyment, no matter how trivial.

Yes , I do gratitude every day . Simple things like - I am grateful for having eyes. legs, hands , smell and other internal organs - I am grateful for very good bed, running, water , a car , shoes - I am grateful for having a good family with good health -I am grateful for my neighborhood , trees, water etc

Something I find interesting with myself 1/2 introvert, is I enjoy saying hello and having a quick conversation maybe ending with a hug, however if I recognize in a few minutes perhaps that said person is about to have a long detailed conversation I start to feel petrified and become very quiet 🤔

Excellent podcast. Love hearing that we need more human interaction. This includes places like the supermarket. Avoid the self checkout. Speak with the cashier. FYI, the link for David is for LMNT

1:45:06 (i dunno if there's any study abt this yet tho) when i heard this part (potentially doing something else in kind of unfocused way, without word-by-word understanding of it - let alone English not my mother's tounge language) right in NewYearDay-1Jan2025, then just yester-night on 2-Jan-2025 i thought and created 'trains' of ideas (from first depicting fears resulted by feeling chemicals / physical - neurotic reaction in body, and so on - just in case of being in life). The profound part is one of which 'train' of thought starts with the silly part (slightly different from this podcast, + was not listening attently of this part either) of how people may explore & enjoy life, even with failures and unsignificant results - but they're in joy and fulfillment w/ life - and that's meaningful & creditable enough to create this loving & living in sync w/ the essence of nature. Then- after kinda 'freestyle' thinking (sorry for making up words) my thought turns into what about MONKEY SWIFTING THE TREE AND BEING JUDGED AS A REFERENCE FOR *MONKEY MIND* (watched the podcast again this afternoon - 1:15PM in Vietnam's clock after 3 hrs of sleep - this podcast may be played when i mid slept around noon). Continued on IMAGINING wild forest w/ monkeys living accordingly to THEIR NATURE AND HOW ENJOYABLE OR SIMPLE A FULFILLED MONKEYS' LIVES IN SWITCHING TREE AROUND under the sunlight, surrounded by green delightening trees in this whole universe. It's that joy to be protected. I think we live life to experience. Joyful state could be hard or easy to cultivate, and even if that's so, at least we don't get the joy away from others - since the joy with life is much appreciated. This thinking is generated also the same day w/ slightly after NewYear1Jan2025 in VN, when i found this creative / nerve-wrecking of the thought i experience - and now lying in bed here just to realize the important part of it how my physical body may grasps the idea for me / the mental mind, and somehow getting structed in sleeps / other occassions w/ many interaction in life. Small note of the part to enjoy life & other personal / newbie step into the energetic topic (well this is even applicable when there are mistakes we made, and here we are to learn & to live in sync with the universe → keep carrying on the kind of universal thinking / thinking from the universe's perspective that life happening to be understandable - for all things happening, and shiftable - raki vietnam taught about this as we have the ability to adjust the functioning of this world though energy | i believe this energetic movement is strong like the magnetic field keeping this Earth safe from UV light). Overall, my thoughts been created in mostly relaxed way, + i lean toward my curiosity, + i appreciate Huberman Lab works and other beings putting effort for the shift to the Earth, and that's just how (maybe i think it means) i live my body in sync w/ this specific area of advancement in the universe allowing some resonated guidance and abilities (something to do w/ unravelling things w/ given info, trandscend it some way regards the urgency and necessity of the problem addressed in society, and may find some seemingly connected events through synco(nocity)-wave of energy of others & delighted by how the universe find joy in communicating w/ a cell like me through my own being, living, or surroundings).

Great podcast! Many of what was discussed here can relate to the teachings of the holy Quran. I recommend to all and especially Prof. Huberman and Prof. Santos to read it and hopefully discuss what is there in light of the current scientific research and hopefully get more insights about happiness from the book. I look forward to seeing this in a future podcast. Thank you Prof. Huberman and Prof. Santos.
