Ford Transit Nugget PLUS - the one with the loo :)

Today at Caravan Salon Düsseldorf 2021 we take a look at the Ford Transit Custom Nugget PLUS. The Nugget Plus differs to the regular Nugget as it has a longer wheelbase which allows for a small washroom at the rear, featuring a fixed cassette toilet and a fold-down washbasin. This means you can be completely self-contained and independent when travelling.
The Ford Transit Custom Nugget Plus is one of the best integrated campervans for families with children thanks to its 'three room' layout which I show you in the video. We also enlist the help of Leonard from Ford to demonstrate how the bed works in the Ford Nugget.

There is a "door" for the toilet if needed. A porta pottie would be worse, no "door". Storage is very limited. But everything you need inside is there. Nice weekend trip van. I would definitely trust Westfalia. 🙂🌼

Thank you so much Andrew, fame at last! Yes the loo is near the kitchen but some of us can’t get through the night without a visit (or two) and I don’t fancy faffing about with a porta potti. We have a Nugget Plus on order now, 3 small boys 10, 7 & 3 so we need those 5 seats. Because of that, I’d like a small freezer/ice box for the fish fingers etc!

Great video-thanks for showing us a good look around the nugget plus. We are very happy owners of the Ford Nugget and have documented in detail our use of it as a family of 4 on our channel. Although the Nugget works well for us ( SWB works great for us as its our daily use vehicle too) , we love seeing the additional features the Nugget plus has. Lots of additional plus points in the layout that I’m sure will work for a lot if people looking for a LWB . Thanks very much 👍

Interesting layout. Have just purchased a Wellhouse Leisure Lux-XL using the same base vehicle. Definitely prefer the Wellhouse kitchen/loo layout at the back plus the amazing sliding door with shelving.

Am not that enthralled with Pop Ups, BUT........this one is a very interesting lay out. Westfalia is a product that I have always appreciated as they were available here in Canada and seemed to be a very good product but limited to the VW. The Ford is an interesting intineration on their product and they do not let anyone down! Thanks Andrew, and Dougal, you are priceless.......Head Drop!

@@pinut187 yes true, but the last to be seen here in Canada were the VW product. And although i have not seen all the RV’s available in our country have never seen any of the new Westfalia product here! Now that Groupe Rapido owns Roadtrek we see the Fiat Ducato (our Dodge Promaster) and the Mercedes Sprinter under that Banner.

Thanks for this review Andrew. I've been wanting to see the inside of the plus for a while. I wish there was room for a small oven in the kitchen and the kitchen sink looked very mean in depth! I would prefer the option of a composting toilet. Also i wonder if the upstairs bed is an optional extra, i would not require it. Price made me wince a bit but great tour of the van. Thank you.

It’s a great van. We recently visited the Ford dealer in Ulverston to view both the LWB and the SWB Nugget, you can hire the SWB if you want to try it out before you commit to a purchase. We really liked it but didn’t think the floor layout was good for our three small dogs, I think I’d be standing on them in the kitchen or standing on them in the lounge. We decided to go for a Wellhouse Ford Custom Misano in the end because the three seats slide forward to travel then right back when you park leaving a good amount of floor for the dogs to lie. At night it doesn’t matter because no doubt they’ll be on the bed!

Really impressed with what they were able to fit in there. The layout works well, however I feel like there's some wasted space in the 'hallway' between the kitchen and the loo. It's not easy, but I'm sure there's an even better layout. But I'm still very impressed with this one. Too bad there's no room for pretty much any big cargo.

The missing toilet is the elephant in the room for this size camper vans. I wonder, is the use of toilet such a negligent issue to all these owners of this type camper vans, California etc that pretend they don’t miss it enough? The layout of all camper vans was based in the iconic first VW which had the engine in the back, dictating the possible layout. Although the engine has been moved from back since many decades ago, the market pretended to ignore this significant change and just wasted the engine space as extra storage (!) and did not bother to search a new layout plan.. Porta potti is actually a non solution for a toilet in this size of vans. This is the first workable toilet, in these vans, “separated” from both sleeping/living areas, with a reasonable privacy/separation given the van’s size. Westfalia Kepler has a similar toilet but the conversion of bed in lounge area is far too complicated. It feels this layout is the much needed new concept for these camper vans. Time will show. Hi Andrew, one of the main points for the Nugget is that they are a 5 seater (5 berth with 3 little ones up top). There are precious few alternatives on the market. We are a family of 5 and use our Nugget for touring Europe (#calicamper family on KZbin) and it works brilliantly for us. Ours is the short wheel base pop top but we have had a “Plus” on order for well over a year. There are long waits to get your hands on one, almost 2 years for us by the time we take delivery…but worth it, we can’t wait! We have never found standing on the work top an issue, nor using a toilet in the kitchen area - its a fun campervan! Also, having been owners of the California, the downstairs bed is in someways easier than the VW as you don’t have to empty the boot to sleep on it and the guy demo’ing made it look harder than it is! Always enjoy watching your varied videos, all the best from the calicamperfamily.

Love it , it just what I want it. Small enough to drive and park where and open floor plan. Toilet in back is the most smartest idea . When smell bad , you can just open the door let it go . I hate the toilet in the middle, it just the Dummest idea I ever see .

We use the SWB Nugget as a family of 4 and works well with organisation and clever use of storage. Not for everyone I appreciate but we are absolutely loving ours. Went for SWB as its our daily drive as well as camper. Our page has lots of videos showing how we use it- also instrucional videos on the Nugget. The main argument for the Nugget Plus is that it can also be used as a van. For us, the question arose: SUV + mobile home + small car or Ford Nugget + small car (SUV then no longer has to be replaced).

I like that you did your best to show this van's plus points, but it seems like a whole bunch of compromises. My biggest question world be where does all your stuff go? Is the Max weight 3500kg on both the Nugget and Nugget Plus. My H2 L2 Transit custom van is only 3100 Kg.

With the longer wheelbase I'd have thought they could have squeezed in a toilet/shower unit as with the traditional Autosleepers Topaz layout on a LWB T4/T5. With the poor cleanliness of some site bathroom facilities, especially in the UK, your own loo/shower is essential (and when wild camping of course). The kitchen on the Nugget Plus looks a bit awkward , but I suppose it's practical because you can have the rear open rather than polluting the main accommodation with cooking odours (but obviously not when someone's using the toilet). Although it's a great base vehicle, I'm not sure if this size of Transit lends itself to such a conversion. It's appeal is that it does have that VW California compact camper look, which many people crave. Whether the depreciation will be as minimal as a VW is uncertain, but the Westfalia name should help. The historical "hippy cool" of the VW is still with us from the 1960s, although nowadays it's more, "hipster cool" despite the high purchase price and unreliability horror stories one hears all the time. The heart would choose a Peugeot/Citroen/Fiat Ducato type LWB van conversion of which there are a huge number of very good converters including Westfalia (I like the Amundsen) and endless configurations. For occassional weekend use and to double-up as a family car, most younger people's heads would opt for a VW California (even if the wallet couldn't afford to). If I was rich or retired with an abundance of leisure time I'd go for a LWB Ducato type conversion or even better, the larger model of Transit and enjoy the extra space and more practical layouts. The Murvi Morocco is one of my favourites, but it's not cheap but does offer more space and practicality that either the California or the Nugget. The company are now also using the larger, wide Transit models which is a great base vehicle.
