In my opinion. "Relic"ing a brand new guitar, is the cheesiest, fakest, lamest thing you can do to a guitar. Takes a special kind of idiot to modify a guitar to essentially "trick" people into thinking youve played that guitar way way way more than you actually have lol. But natural aged, relic-ed guitars are very cool.
@triax7006
@triax7006 2 жыл бұрын
I don't get it either. The only way I can see it is if people want it for the look & it is just availability & needing the confidence the guitar is not going to just be a log & not be a good player. Then there are people who will just hang it on a wall & not really touch as they may mark it 🤣

The only problem with "custom" shops is that they aren't true custom. Meaning this; I stand at 6'7 so all guitars look like toys to me when they are in my hands. I wanted a custom build guitar body that is slightly bigger than the average guitar. Unfortunately, these custom shops won't build me a body that is slightly bigger. They will cover anything EXCEPT making the guitar slightly bigger. They will do leggo guitar bodies, Game of Thrones guitar bodies, gold leaf covered bodies, and a smoked acrylic "not easy to machine" bodies but they won't carve me out an alder Stratocaster body that is slightly bigger. Now if Buckethead can get a Gibson Les Paul that is slightly bigger, why can't Fender?

@Boony Tooty Correct, that is why especially as even cheap guitars now due to modern techniques such as CNC are the best option if a person is learning & just picking up the guitar. I suppose if they are going to be committed a better guitar that will pretty much guarantee to be a good player & make it easier to play is the best option, but again it isn't going to cost that much. Gone are the days of terrible guitars that were awful & put people off from playing.
@teleguy5699
@teleguy5699 2 жыл бұрын
@Boony Tooty In my opinion the sound is just a minor part of why you buy a custom shop guitar. It's getting the exact feel, attention to detail, look, and yes the sound you want all rolled into your "one of" special guitar. Some people buy huge RV's with their disposable income. Some people buy custom built guitars. I agree with you that if a crappy player gets one thinking he's going to become a guitar god, then reality will hit them in the face, but like I said, the whole package is what would entice me if I wanted one.

I worked for PRS for a short while back in the '90s, and that was exactly the case. The suits in the front office were making bank and buying real estate. The people in the factory who actually made the guitars were paid poverty wages. They'd arrive for work in cars that were falling apart and held together with baling wire. The turnover rate in the factory was enormous, because everyone would leave after three or four months to find another job they could actually live on.

Thanks for giving us a tour of Fender's Custom Shop. Very cool to see how they masterfully manfacture these incredible works of art. Its always a treat to see what goes on behind the scenes in creating these unique guitars. If money were no object, I'm sure I could keep them enployeed for many years with all the crazy ideas I have in my head for guitar designs. I started playing guitar when I was 6 years old. Jimi Hendrix gave me my very first guitar lesson when I happen to meet him in the summer of 1969 at a pawn shop in Columbus, Ohio, where he stopped in route to his Electric Ladyland Studio in New York. Hendrix was the sweetest guy you would ever want to meet, he was so down to Earth. I was messing around with a 1963 Fender Jazzmaster guitar and I asked him if he could teach me how to play All Along The Watchtower and he said he couldn't because there are 10 separate guitar tracks in its recording and it would take him a whole week to teach me all those. He taught me how to play Voodoo Chile Slight Return instead. I just turned 60 this year and I always look back on that day in 1969 with great admiration in knowing that I was jamming with one of the great guitarists of all time.

Can't blame Fender for fleecing people who have more money than sense. And it happens a lot in many industries where people will pay over the odds for something they consider to be worth it. I could understand if they were building something that was so good that no other normal guitar builder/manufacturer could do, but the sad fact is they are not. They are just Fender models that the customer thinks they are getting something unique. That is something they could do themselves, but of course then it's about the S/N & having the paperwork that says "Custom Shop".

Great video! But I think relicing must be a terrible waste of time. Scraping paint off and gouging bits out of the neck is pretty weird. There’s lots of money to be made in this area now because people with more money then sense buy relics to look cool. Better off with a new guitar finished in very thin nitro and wear it yourself instead of copying someone else which makes no sense. It’s a waste making a new guitar that costs €4000 then making look 50 years old. Kind of perverse. The automobile companies don’t do it do they?

Love Fender but must say, this space is 🥱. Needs a redesign for sure. Looks like someone’s souped up garage. Where’s the nostalgia, the vibe, the mystique? There’s barely any pics on the walls. No Jimi? They should take a page from Gibson and do something like their Gibson lounge. Create an experience where people can come down and feel like they are a part of the Fender family but also have a dedicated artist and custom shop lounge that really highlights what they do . A lot of bs coming from that sales guy lol. Changing body wood making a huge difference in tone for example.. neck wood as well, that you have to build pickups to match them...come on lol. Then they are trying to frame their sourcing of ebony as somehow virtuous... I think Fender know who they are selling to & are just resting on their laurels & just sell guitars that are no better & probably worse than a lot on he market. There is a limit to what guitar players expect & modern tolling & CNC for example will get pretty much all guitars even the cheapest available to be very good players even if the pickups, hardware etc is on the cheap side. After all it's really just the name that people would buy now from Fender or Gibson etc.

The interviewer asks "Is it mostly woodwork that they're doing... the master builders?". It is obvious that the "master builders" do no woodwork at all apart from minor sanding and the relic work, but the Fender rep glosses over that by saying that "they will pull the whole thing together", implying that they personally do every process in making a guitar. These are great guitars, no doubt, but they are not handmade "from stem to stern" as the Fender guy says. They are made from selected timber which is CNC machined and then put together carefully. Every electric guitar in every guitar factory the world is hand made in the respect that all the parts are assembled and screwed together by hand. The great Custom Shop "master builder" marketing trick is the implication that they are 100% handmade from raw lumber to finished product by one person and charging as if they were. There's nothing wrong with the process that they use, it produces great guitars, and I am in awe of Fender's marketing strategy...that's the breathtaking part of the Custom Shop.

WoW. Excellent tour of the factory. I just ordered an American Ultra Strat HSS in Texas Tea finish. Waiting for it to arrive after Sweetwater receives it from Fender. Brand New, from the factory. I kinda feel like it's being made just for me. My thanks to you and the wonderful team at Fender.

Couldn't afford a Custom Shop P Bass, but, because I'm left handed (save the jokes, I've heard them all), I only had three colors to choose from, as opposed to the 12 (I think) for right handers...I still can't figure out why...I had to go to the Mod Shop. It cost me $300 over the American Series, but I was able to get Vintage 63 pups, and a 1963 shape on the neck. Do I think it was worth the almost $2K? You goddamn right I do! I told my kids they can't have it. It's being buried with me.

Fender guitars are really no longer a unique instrument. You can easily build one yourself and specify all the parts and electronics you like. You can purchase a finished body and neck. You can assemble it in a few hours and it plays and sounds like a Fender. Strat or Tele take your pick... Much more difficult to replicate a Gibson, PRS, Guild, Gretch or Schecter unless you have serious luther skills and can apply a professional finish to it.

Yep it is just down to the name & unfortunately people will still buy the name & not care about the guitar so much. I have nothing against Fender existing, it is always a shame when the original manufacturer goes bankrupt & are undercut. But possibly their 'custom shop' is how they can keep going. But they are not immune to market conditions & a reminder they were bought out in the 1960's by CBS. So the name could actually live on no matter where it was made. With the quality of instruments from everywhere now it actually isn't important & it is really a losing battle for the 'original' to justify higher prices despite others offering better instruments at a lower price.

Gotta hand it to Fender - they have had the aging thing down for a long time. They win the relic game. Very believable. The Gibsons just aren't there yet. They feel wrong and are missing that last little bit that Fender has owned until now.

More and more unknown "master builders" flock Custom Shop, while Fender fires THE Rock Star of Master Builders - a guy who has worked with the greatest of famous Artists. And what for the Artist Signature Guitars he made? Have these been all erased from existence - taken out of the Custom Shop ??? The woke Fender bosses ... No thank you !

I'm 65, been playing since 1971, got my first Stratocaster (new) in 1974 ( Olympic White/Maple Neck). Prior to '74, I've owned several guitars including an Ibanez Les Paul Custom replica which I traded in for the Strat, and I was disappointed that I had to change my string gauge down to get the same tension I was accustomed to for almost 4 years. I've always wondered why FENDER featured a 25.5" scale length as opposed to the 24.75" scale length common on many guitars of the time? Can anyone school me on this subject?

If they have really done tests where they make six guitars and change just one element like bridge material (hopefully the same in all six, or it wouldn't be a very valid test) to see what sonic effect it has (as he said they have), then let's see/hear the results. "It's pretty insane" is not really a scientific statement as far as I know. And of course if the solid body wood makes any sonic difference (as he seemed to be suggesting), the strat "pickup swap" guitar we saw would seem to fly in the face of that, would it not ? That is, you can get the sonic effect of different pickups when customizing your FCS guitar by listening to them in just a single body.
@TheCleaner6969
@TheCleaner6969 11 ай бұрын
So if Fenders using cnc's on production why tf are there crooked holes mounting the bridge on the sonic strat? Why is the body routed so rough? Did they set the speed & feed so fast to tear through them at super sonic speeds?! They're using a machine to sand the fretboard yet my Affinity strat had a ski slope! And to boot Fender stamps the pickguards out & yet the NEW Sonic series Strat I had to file each hole .062 wider & 0.032 higher out to fit after market pickups. SMH
