RIP Shane McGowan. A genius, a legend and a poet that will never be seen again. Heart goes out to his loved ones, Victoria the measure of his dreams, his Father and sister and the rest of his family. Sad day.

Timeline: This song was released in November of 1979 on Soho Records. "Shake It Up" by The Cars was released in November of 1981 and became one of their most popular songs: #4 peaking on the Billboard Hot 100/#2 on Billboard Top 200. The blatancy of this plagiarism is enough to make Led Zeppelin blush. I've always wondered why this is never mentioned [even here] nor why it was never pursued legally by MacGowan.

I guess, Shane MacGowan wasn't a type of guy to go around suing people!
@jamesbradshaw33894 жыл бұрын
To me, this sounds very much like the very great Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Birds, The Cars with the vocals a lot like the might Willy DeVille also like Elvis, I mean Elvis Costello, Shane put that that in your pipe and smoke if you do not agree with those facts, still a great rocking song from the future master poet,/wordsmith, songwriter, singer. frontman and a friend to all Mr Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan
@colddaze6680 Жыл бұрын
It surely does. Then they did undeniable punk rock classics like 'so pissed off' and ' stupid cow' . Johnny Moped did 'hard loving man''. Also 'darling let's have another baby'.Punk was bit more variable back then I suppose
@punkaroos12310 ай бұрын
Lol. As much as I love The Cars, they were a litigious bunch. There was a local new wave band in South Florida in the early 80’s that had an awesome song called “Shake It Up”, and The Cars actually sued them over rights to the name. The first time I heard this, I wanted to punch Ric Ocasek.

On the other hand, you managed to miss peak Light Ent noncedom, the tail end of Love Thy Neighbour, 'Watch your backs, lads!', and everybody bloody smoking bloody everywhere. Odd, interstitial, mixed-bag sort of era, with more than its share of tack and shod.

Very Clash. Punk for the slightly out of tune guitar. Cutting his teeth songwriting, both the teeth and songwriting went on from here! One wonders if there was a relationship betwixt the two, one downward t'other upward!! Great tune with memories attached.
