The Irish are just like her people back in butcher holler. And the folk music of Ireland and Scotland forms the basis of country music from Appalachia and, like jazz, uniquely American. Dolly is among her people and they understand her. That song, written about her severely impoverished childhood in Appalachia, could have easily been written about childhood memories of Ireland. Perfect alignment among singer and her audience, expressing essential values of maternal love, gratitude and humility. Sentiments both very real and transcendent. Dolly and the Irish bless us.

Loretta Lynn was from Butchers Holler Kentucky. Dolly is from around Sevierville, Tennessee. Both are small towns in the Appalachia Mountains. Dolly has done so much for her home state and her home county. When fire swept through the Smokey Mountains, Dolly helped so many people build their businesses and homes back. She has given so much to the education of children and the economy of Tennessee! Recently Tennessee wanted to put a statue of her in Nashville in the state capital and Dolly very humbly declined the honor. That is just how she is, a generous soul who gives and gives but so many of her contributions are done privately because she does it out of the goodness of her heart not for any fame or glory. Speaking as a Tennessean myself, I can think of no one else who is as respected and loved in our state as Dolly Parton. What a true blessing to the world she is.

From what I can gather, the place Dolly comes from is exactly where our Irish and Scottish forefathers settled when they left Ireland for the new world, and the appalachian people are mostly Irish and Scottish descendants anyway. Bluegrass and country music both found their way to appalachian communities through iroshband Scottish emigrants who took celtic music with them, and it should come as no surprise for any appalachians to hear that bluegrass and country music are very popular here in Ireland. We are the same people. We love the same music. God bless our appalachian brothers and sisters, and I always give a shout to our newfie brothers and sisters too. Good people, all of you.

I don't think he's putting down editing and tuning. Even the greatest artists use them, including Dolly herself when she's in the studio I'm sure. The point was simply that Dolly sounds absolutely amazing even without it.
@eldricgrubbidge64653 жыл бұрын
Editing and auto tune should add something, but there should be some substance there in the first place. Like you're losing the atmosphere and the warmth of a live performance, and some of the subtleties of tone etc... So you make up for it with some reverb. Maybe you tidy up a few little inconsistencies at the same time. But if you can't sing in tune, or produce a good, consistent tone, or just perform music properly, you've no business recording. And dolly is clearly a consummate professional. Quite aside from having something unique, which she does, she has the polish of someone who has been doing it for years.

This is wonderful! Dolly is just a sweetie. The Irish love a good tune. Some years ago my sister and her husband, a well-known musician from the area we live in on Vancouver Island (Canada) went on a trip to Ireland. At one pub they got chatting with the fellows there who were providing the musical entertainment and it was revealed that they were down a man so could not do their regular set. My cheeky sister told them they could "borrow my man" and told them how many instruments he could play. So they did. They had a great time, and even let my brother-in-law sing. He ended up teaching them one of the songs HIS band plays all the time. Anyway, they stopped in that town longer than planned because they asked him to come back the next two nights as well - and they tried to pay him but he didn't take it, so they kept the pints flowing, and declared him "honorary band leader".😂 When my sister and her husband had to continue on their journey, and it was determined where their next several stops were, the fellows in the band gave him contacts for some other pubs along the way, and so he ended up playing in at least 3 more places. They had an absolute blast. Ireland is fabulous.

I am English and had a similar experience, I was alone as I was visiting my young son who lived with my ex-wife who had moved to Ireland. I wanted to see what it was like in a real Irish pub. There I was having a beer and got chatting. There were some guys playing and I just happened to mention that I played guitar. A guitar was produced as if out of nowhere and I spent the rest of the evening trying to keep up with the locals and this was not easy. I didn't have to buy a drink for the rest of night and got quite merry. Someone guided me back to the B & B I was staying in as all I could remember was the name of the Landlady. At breakfast the next morning the Landlady had heard all about it. A great nation.

When it comes to tunes and ballads anyway. I've seen the likes of Andy Irvine and Donal lunny in pubs. Or Frankie Gavin or alec Finn. Big names, but they'll still take the odd small gig. Slinky cowboy - I'm an old man who blessedly does not feel old . I grew up in an America that frequently hated me because of my skin color . That was during the 1950's when America was totally different . It was a time when local laws were so strict that there were no stores open on Sundays and no work done except cooking the Sunday meal . But, as the song says: that was "long long ago". I now live in a country where God has been placed in exile . A country where corruption and dishonesty are more common than their corollaries . So now, I too, have learned to be skeptical of what I see and hear . The "school of life" taught those things. Thus, when I read your comment about the bloke who used to work with Dolly, I was looking for a choice tidbit that would at last, disclose the "chink in her armor ". But, the bloke's true story showed me that she is a true angel . I was brought instantly to tears as I reminisced of a troubled young country that was, in those times , confused , addled , and hubristic , while simultaneously, being innocent , Constitutionally and Spiritually driven , and FREE …

Youngest of eight kids and our dad passed away from cancer when I was in third grade. He was of Irish descent and had the gift of gab, and a man's man yet full of affection. My mom, who is now passed, made sure we understood how much he loved each of us with all his heart. It amazes me how she kept our family going the way she did and feel part of the reason was my dad's spirit supported us along the way. She was the model of grace and dignity, and she didn't wallow in his loss. She spoke with intense gratitude when telling stories about him. Growing up it was clear we didn't have allot of money - e.g. going to school with patches on our jeans to make them last a little bit longer. But I felt rich in spirit and surrounded by love. That was the foundation my wife (who happens to be all Irish :) and I built a wonderful life together and raised three amazing children who all know they are loved deeply by us, and that we appreciate them for who they are. They've grown into strong independent young adults who are well-balanced and have solid moral compasses, and they are now starting families of their own. I have not been perfect - who is - but know my parents are proud of the man I became and the husband and father I am. I am grateful for their example and in some ways glad I didn't "have much" growing up. God Bless Dolly and the Irish - in all of us!

That guitarist had some skills... Up the Irish!

He is a very renowned Australian/Irish musician both in his own right and as a collaborator with famous artists...and was briefly married to Sinead O'Connor too ;)

Google "Begley & Cooney" - he's pretty famous in his own right.

Just goes to show what a true vocalist Dolly is. No effects added at a mixing board. Just straight and dry through a microphone and a single powered stand amplifier. Awesome.

Supposedly she wouldn’t sing for them so the owner of the pub Paidi O Shea had to give her one of his jerseys from an all ireland final that he won just so that she would sing one song. Everything has a price.

Fair barter (if true) for such a sweet musical performance, though I am a bit surprised Dolly Parton would value or be particularly persuaded by such a thing.

1:20 this is the moment Dolly realizes and sort of acknowledges that the guitarist here is actually legit, and so she begins to feel more comfortable to be able to really perform the song in a way that is authentic as possible. At the point she knew she didn't have to worry about the guitarist and could just focus on putting everything into her singing. Pretty cool moment!
