I own a pair of second hand, slightly damaged 705 S2 Signatures and think they look and sound fantastic. The damage was easy to overcome and ultimately saved me a lot of money. Knowing that B&W put more effort into the differences between the 705 S3 and S3 Signatures than they did with the last generation S2s has really piqued my interest. But, until I can come across a show room to demo or an affordable price to own, I will have to continue to experience products such as these signatures vicariously through the ears of Andrew. Thank you for the review. Keep playing the role of our super handsome friend who attracts all the best speakers and gear at the night club. :)

What I like about y’alls channel is your fantastic straddling of hifi and reality. Its so easy with audio to get so deep in the weeds you can’t see the sky. Despite having had your hands on endgame equipment, you come back to ‘inferior’ systems and do a marvelous job sharing what you loved about them. Love what you two do.

In my opinion, B&W speakers are a perfect example of why measurements aren't everything. I have some older 685S2 bookshelf speakers and, to me, they sound exciting and very dynamic, yet smooth in the midrange. To my ears, the midrange dip makes for a much more smooth & pleasant sound. After this review, I'd love to update to these 705S3 Signatures.

I just watched your video about the Bowers & Wilkins Formation Duo from 5 years ago, and I'm curious about what you would say about the Formation Duo today, five years later. Are these speakers still among the best choices in active systems, or have they become outdated, with better options available at the same price point among active speakers? What's your overall perspective on active vs. passive speakers today? Do you think B&W should update the Formation Duo if they want to remain competitive?

I have the B&W 702 S-2 versions (older - got for a good price 2 years back as S-3s arriving to market)) Hooked up to my Yamaha 2200 Integrated - detail is fabulous. Bass is OK" (smooth - punchy - but not as powerful as many would like. And yes - a bit "bright" (But again the detail (and separation) are so good I put up with it) I "tame" the brightness by turning the bass up a notch - and treble down 1.5 notches.

I guess I am different from most people. I have and like the B&W 607 S2. My 60-year-old ears cannot hear much above 12 KHz. And I don’t listen loud. So, the 607 S2 never sound ear-bleedingly bright to me. Sure, if I turn up the volume, the sound can get too bright. But at the volume that I listen, and with my ears cutting off high frequencies, they sound bright, but not too bright to me (I like bright sound).

Awesome review as always. But I do have a couple frivolous questions for both you and Kristi: 1. How strongly do you feel about this finish option vs the blue option? The blue in your 801 review seemed to have more depth than the marketing photos suggested. 2. Beyond build quality and the B&W mystique, did the 705 Sig have any sonic advantages over the SVS Titans in your and Kristi’s opinion? 3. Were you guys able to test these with your Sony 7000 receiver? I ask this because I’m likely to go with a phantom center, despite the rave review of the B&W center options you mentioned, and you’ve said in the past Denon/Marantz make phantom centers sound recessed in the mix. Thank you so much in advance if you’re able to answer these questions, and thanks again for the wonderful review.

@gpapa31

I had them till recently and they sound phenomenal for their price bracket. Here in the UK you can find them on great deals as low as $2500-2600 range. The fact you get a complete system (full range bookshelves with sub capability + amp + preamp + DAC + Streamer) in a box that can easily match or surpass in some cases sonically a high end B&W 705 complete traditional system setup and at that price bracket is a STEAL. I truly hope and pray B&W hasn’t given up on the Duos and are investing in a Gen 2 version. It’s been quite a while and no rumours for an update. 😢 IMHO it can easily be the future of HiFi. Note: connectivity issues were a problem for me 3 years ago. Since then the speakers have had several firmware updates and as of the past 2 years I NEVER had almost a single issue. Plug and play.
@rakeshs1291
@rakeshs1291 Ай бұрын
@@gpapa31completely agree. I brought the Duos based on Andrew and Kristi’s review and has been very happy with them and continue to be. I have a Cambridge Alva TT v2 connected via Formation Audio and it sounds excellent, better than any hi-res streaming services. Also, recent firmware updates have addressed my main grips regarding connection issues and input switching. So not much to complain here any more. Having said that, I am wondering what would be an upgrade from here and am curious to hear what did you choose after Duos and did you feel it was a worthwhile upgrade. Every time I audition a speaker setup in the showroom and come back to my Duo, I always felt that I was not missing out compared to the high priced alternatives I just auditioned. But the upgrade bug keeps itching😊
@gpapa31
@gpapa31 Ай бұрын
@@rakeshs1291 Comes down to what you want. I loved the Duos because it is a High-End B&W complete system (almost zero compromise or cash grab antics) in a box and with ridiculous ease of use. Speakers were always plugged and switch ON the second I got home. Less than a minute boot I had High Res/High End audiophile sound on the tap (Qobuz streamer here). I don’t think you can replicate the same experience with a traditional system (separates) @ THAT price. Andrew can correct me but I can’t find something similarly good and I have demoed many all in one smart high end speakers (LS50, LS60, Beolab 8, Dali Rubicon 8c, Sonus Faber etc). The “drawback” is you cannot customise your setup (choose different amp, preamp, DAC) that would allow you more sonic choices. Also it lacks physical IN/OUTs making it purely a wireless experience with whatever that entails. IMHO the natural evolution for the Duo would be a Gen 2 version with a Diamond twitter and a better internal amp which will bring the 800 series experience to a new level of comfort and lifestyle ease. Or a floorstander version to rival LS60? Maybe a better connectivity protocol, new app and why not some physical AUX options. There are no limits to where the Duos can go with the right commitment behind them, the tech is here. It’s an outstanding idea for people who are after High End B&W signature audio experience without the hassle and headache of getting separates. And IMHO shares the benefits and uniqueness of an active speaker Design which is short signal path, optimised drive unit behaviour to amplifier, dynamic EQ, full control over dynamic drive unit behaviour, custom dedicated, voiced amp based on the character B&W wants to give to the speaker etc. Convenient, fast, small footprint, no cables and boxes to worry and with almost zero compromise on audio quality. If that’s what you want I’d say you’re already there man, you don’t need to look any further as of now. Unless of course you are after that “godlike sound” of ultra high end gear - high 800 series, Focal Diablos, Wilson audio and beyond. But you’re also looking at an enormous leap on budget.

So basically what you’re saying Andrew, if I have a hole burning in my pocket, I need to get these. Since I also adore B&W and miss their sound dearly… you’re literally making me into a trigger man of sorts right now. Also, I have to knock B&W a bit, as I feel like that the Datuk (might have spelled that wrong) finish to me personally looks far better than the wood finish of the 801 Signature. Is that just me? I just feel like all those swirls of wood coloring and staining make it look cheaper than this 700 signature?.. either way, it’s a great review and video and also, I think all manufacturers need to pay attention to B&Ws lineup. Meaning it’s absolute perfection in terms of pricing, placement within the hierarchy of their products and everything else. Looking at you Focal…. And many others. I don’t know if you’ve only gotten the bookshelves, or the towers as well, but do you think the tower would be far hungrier in terms of power knowing the previous generation 700 signatures? Those were insanely power hungry. Think these are easier to drive? I’m still a very much tower guy… Hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday and weekend overall! 🎉
@andrewrobinsonreviews
@andrewrobinsonreviews Ай бұрын
I suspect the towers would require a bit more juice or current than the bookshelf speakers here because of their bass response-or lack thereof. We don't have the towers this time, and I'm not sure I'll request them as I don't want to overrun the channel this year with B&W. I would like to think the M1 could work for the towers, but I don't want to put money on it. The older towers took quite a lot of work to get 100% right, and I doubt the new model will be THAT different. As for the finish, I think the fact that the burl used on the 800 Series is synthetic (if memory serves) doesn't look quite right or natural compared to the more straight lines of the Datuk here. Though, flipside argument, the 700 Series has straighter cabinet lines, so maybe that helps sell the Datuk whereas the curved cabinet of the 800 Series would look "weird?"
@gavriushka

Good morning A&K. The original B&W 704 floor stander circa mid-2000's was my first taste of better hi-fi although I ultimately moved on as not a complete fan of the B&W sound, at least at that time. I would have thought a comparison between the 705 S3 signature and the standard 805 D4 would have been an interesting comparison to find out what the delta is between them at less than half the price. On a separate note, it would be interesting if when the McIntosh review lands, you also had on hand the C2800 tube pre-amp to compare against the C55 solid state version. I find McIntosh unique in this regard, offering basically a very similar pre-amp in either a solid state or tube version allowing one to contrast the sound difference if any. Love the reviews and looking forward to Unplugged. Thanks!

Great review! They are very pretty - especially the blue finish you showed. Probably a silly question - but I always wonder when you show the frequency response - does the room correction like on the cinema 30 “correct” the dip in the frequency response? Are some speakers easier to correct than others - or do the modern electronics generally make tweaks easy? I can say for my Klipsch 5000f tweaking Audyssey multi EQ was game changing.

Lovely review, as always! Could you elaborate on how you integrate your miniDSP SHD with your Mac equipment? Specifically, do you place it between the preamp and amplifier to serve as a crossover for your entire system (e.g., directing frequencies above 80 Hz to the speakers and below 80 Hz to the subwoofer), or do you utilize a full-range output from the preamp and use the SHD solely for subwoofer EQ?

Ooh, the Denon CEOL N12! I hope you review it! I'm sure it's no Marantz M1, especially since the M1 has a great phantom surround mode. Which reminds me... in your Sony receiver reviews last year (and in the newer Bravia Theater Quad review) you kept talking about how great Sony's surround processing is. Many of those receivers have Sony's "S-Force PRO Front Surround", and I'm curious as to how they might compare to the M1. Thanks!

Hi Andrew, thanks for another great review. You said that the S3 signature give a taste of the 801 d4 signature while marginally better than the original s3s. Does it mean that the s3s are still great speakers? Are they outclassed by the signatures? Is the difference worth upgrading? Thanks

Hey Guys always watch your reviews. I think some of the speaker companies do also. One such company is Triangle . You did a review on their entry line flagship- The Borea Bro 9s. A generally good review. Some of the things you addressed( Cabinet Resonance, Image fuzziness etc) I think they listened to. They just released the new Triangle Bro 10s - The new Borea Flagship in March. Looking at the spec sheet it, It seems in the new speaker they addressed some of the things you and Kristi critiqued. Also its priced the same as the Polk R 700. Hope you review it. Seems around $ 2000.00 The Polk is the Heavyweight champion. ( Boy thats good for the consumer) Any who. Kudos to you and Kristi. Ps you reviewed the Polk Legend 100, and 200. But the Polk L 600 Is the real Diamond in That Line😊

My Carinas have the same dip, and it's totally unnoticeable. I didn't even bother with PEQ. That JET ribbon tweeter did have to be tamed though.

Hey A & K! I'd consider myself an audio normie, who isn't a serious audiophile, but who appreciates sound (I don't need your disclaimer from your last unplugged! 😂). I love to listen to music as well as have a great experience with movie watching - I just want audio to bring a smile to my face! So I'd love to get your thoughts on a traditional 2.1 speaker + amp set up, such a the B&W 705 S3S here (along with your recent glowing review of the Marantz M1 pairing) versus something like the new Sony Quad for those like me who just want a great experience for music and cinema without writing an infinite cheque. Are they comparable in any way? Great content as always (p.s please do more home update / furnishings videos, I love those as much as the audio/tv reviews!)

Hi Andrew, great review. However, after watching your recent review of the Marantz C30, do you still think it's a good match for the 705 S3 Signature in a similar setup (LR & C) with a sub? Or is the Sony AZ7000ES the way to go?

Hi! Loved the review! Have you had a chance to listen to 706 s3? Are they any good? It's impossible to find a comparison between these two, and - as you said - there are speakers that you just have to listen to. That's why comparing specs on paper doesn't really do it for me.

I actually have a pair of R3 metas arriving tomorrow. I already have a pair of SVS 3000 Micro subs which I know you have experience with. Just curious how you think a setup like this might compare to the B&Ws or the Titans. The R3s and the SVS subs come in around 3900 so definitely the better value compared to the B&W but about the same as the Titans. Less cost to me obviously since I already own the subs.

@orthosympa6993 Ай бұрын
The R3 are more neutral and smoother than either the B&W or the SVS (both are brighter and more dynamic). The R3 Metas paired with the svs micro is a killer combo.

Even though the 801 signatures are phenomenal they are made for medium large to large rooms you can pair and place a set of 805 or even for them in place configure it with at least three good subs or four and run multi channel streaming and I’ve done properly with a lot of work. You can rival a set of 80 one and it still be less than what you would pay for 80 one but again in my opinion, placement calibration, and equipment pairing is everything of course at all factors in with room size, etc. etc. the rabbit hole just goes on and on, but I cannot say that you can’t get a very close result with lesser costing speakers. I believe, especially if you have diamond tweeters and you have at least 8054 and 805D3 and you have a multi channel configuration. I believe it’s possible to get close as far as clarity depth in the proper set up. You’re not gonna touch the highest volume output. That’s not even gonna be a thing, but I think all the other boxes would be checked pretty closely, especially if you’re running 3 to 4 subwoofers as well.
