Is this a review of the Sony Bravia Theater Quad? How does it compare to the comparable Wharfedale Elysian 4 with the $5,000 center channel? Which one is heavier and requires more space? If I have the HT9, should I upgrade? Does the Quad produce more bass? What would happen if I put the Elysian 4 on top of the Quad speaker and the center on top of the control box?

I think it would be a good idea for Sony to have a combo center speaker with the control box. I know the phantom center is already very good but I think a center speaker would really push many enthusiasts (who are currently still uncertain) into this system. At the same time, might as well have the center combined with the control box with more inputs/physical controls as well.

That was an excellent video. I own the Sony HT-A9 with the larger sub. I completely agree with everything you said, and I have enjoyed the first generation of this hybrid sound bar more than my other home theaters. I do have one question. In the advanced settings under manual control I have it set to High. When I set it to neutral or low, it sounds like I’m listening to it in a tin can. lol! But when I put it to high, it is the most immersive 12 speaker phantom I’ve ever heard along with 360 spatial audio. Am I doing something wrong? Is it supposed to be set to high and does the quad have the same issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sony took the subs out of the box because people said they didn't want them. Maybe they live in an apartment or complex. So they made them an option. Plus you can choose what sub you want.

Andrew, i asked Ealan this as well. Can this system work with an 8 foot textured ceiling? I guess that would depend on sound bouncing which usually needs a flat ceiling to work properly. Thanks.

Good afternoon Andrew and Kristi. Excellent thorough review of the Sony and the benefits vs a soundbar based system. Agree that not including a sub especially at the $2500 price tag seems counterintuitive to a HTIB system especially one that features such bass-shy speakers. Thanks again for all the great reviews and looking forward to Friday.
@Dan-t5p8t8 ай бұрын
First of all, great review as always 🙂 Sony, honestly, expecting people to spend a fortune on your system here to get better sound and then saying they can just use the terrible sound from the TV as the center channel is completely insane. People are buying a product like this specifically to get away from TV sound. I simply don't understand it. Why haven't they addressed all the issues that existed with previous products, such as connectivity problems and missing sound in some channels, etc.? Why don't they just include the option to connect everything with cables if desired to ensure 100% stable connection between all channels? It's a complete mystery to me. There should be one subwoofer included in the box with the option to purchase another one if desired, and give people the option to buy an additional speaker to use as the center channel. There is simply too far to go before this is a "finished" product, with too many overlooked opportunities to lead the market.

Andrew; where is your profit sharing from Sony?! I loved your review, as always. Am a first-gen adopter of the HT-A9 as My Mrs was not into a sound profile requiring constant change to my receiver/speaker configuration, tearing apart the viewing space for the umpteenth time, stands, wires and (to her) ugly pieces of audio gear sticking out of every corner imaginable. I pickedup this system today watching Jurassic Park now replacing Klipsch RP 8000F's, their newer 1200 sub, PD240 slims for rears and a Denon AVRX-4300H. I cannot believe this system is real. It's at least as good, maybe better in some ways at actually giving a great movie experience. I was afraid that it wasn't going to be 'loud' or fill the room enough based on past 'soundbar' experiences. Completely wrong. I don't think for one minute you're wrong that these kinds of systems with great positional software are the future for most home Theater setups . It even used my cellphone microphone instead of a stand-alone which was super fun .It's definitely replacing my Klipsch reference system without question. My only gripe is the lack of HDMI ports but I can sort of see Sony's position on this that their A/V receivers fill that need and, if pairing with a TV, the idea should be to use the TV as the 'receiver' . For me, I just use 1 Apple TV and a UHD-ray player so it wasn't a big deal.

Perhaps I'm biased (as I help write these reviews), but I don't feel that Andrew tip-toes around or avoids critique. In fact, he calls Sony out in this video. So while I understand your frustration with the 'clearly hasn't spent 5 minutes with a product' crowd, I find your comment about being jaded misplaced, and I have to wonder how well - and this isn't just you - people pay attention to the video because from my perspective you've already overlooked some things.

Great review, and I'd certainly consider the BRTQ, but for one issue - each speaker needing power. I feel it's much easier to hide speaker wire than it is to hide power cables, especially if you don't have outlets near where the speakers should be. The speakers look great mounted on a wall near the TV, but they're not as easy to set up as they look.

This. And because years ago I ran (and hid under floor) speaker wire and sub RCA cable(s) for my 5.1 system, I'd never have a reason to figure out how/where to plug in all 4 speakers like with this system. However for some it might represent a good option.

Thank you so much Andrew ☺️ This is now the second time you’ve focused my attention on a particular product I’m now implementing within a clients home. First was the Monitor Platinum 200 3G. Second is now the Theater Quad. Believe it will work perfectly within my clients space given its challenging layout, lack of ability to run wire AND the television we installed this week, the XR77A95L. Plan to test the S Center Sync. Fingers crossed. So nice as a custom dealer to have someone who’s review is trustworthy annnd to not rely solely on known products we’ve installed in the past. I am not a fan of Beta testing within a clients home or wincing as I turn the system on in hopes it performs as well as the manufacturer would have you believe. Soooo thank U

great review - crazy system but moreso that it is a clear £600-700 more than the older ht system. (1899 entry price when new) Is it worth that over and above the old ? (are you aware without Kristy to bounce off your sign off is a little weird and awkward ? ;-)

How do you recommend connecting the Apple TV to the Bravia Quad? To HDMI on the Quad or to TV and leverage the Quad connection to the TV arc/earc?

Wondering how this will compare to their upcoming Theater Bar 9. Which one of these is supposed to be the flagship?
@L330HH8 ай бұрын
Both are flagship.

If you don't want any cables in both sides of your tv and prefer something simple, the theatre bar 9 is your go to, but you won't get the same sound bubble 360 sony spatial audio immersion that you get with either the a9 or the quad cuz all the sound will come out from under your tv.

I've had HT-A9 for close to three years now .. still impresses me when the movie creators use the sound accurately .. Whenever I randomly ask any guest watching TV at my place from where the sound is coming, everyone says its coming from the TV .. The center phantom channel is that good .. All the arm chair activists with no money and no knowledge will continue blaming Sony for no center channel .. I'm sure Quad would be nicer sounding with additional drivers

Warranty? Wish more reviewers would give their opinion on the warranty offered for these high dollar proprietary systems. That is a value consideration that is key for me at these price points.

I’ve had some other brands as my audio system. I currently have a Sonos system that I built with Sonos Arc, 2 subs third Gen and 2 Sonos SLs and I don’t think I’ll find something that will top this off. And I love the fact that you can control all of it thru an app.

Would you still build a budget system with Dennon x580bt + Elac b6.2 (speaker+center) + BIC America f12 or just get these?

As I say in the conclusion, it all depends if you want to be a home theater enthusiast with components and the ability to swap and play, or if you just want a home theater. If you want simplicity and a one-and-done solution (in my opinion) get the Sony. If you want any future expandability do not get the Sony.

Not enough audio inputs. Need the ability to connect a 3rd party streamer for more music streaming options. Also need the ability to connect the system to roon for multi-room playback. Lack of inputs for a $2500+ system is unforgivable.

I brought a set home along with the larger sub. I then proceeded to test it against an AVR setup with an older set of B&Ws and a brand new Sony that also has their 360 surround feature. I spent hours and couldn't get the AVR setup to have the 3D sound field or the level of realistic clarity that the Quads achieved in my room. They aren't the greatest speakers ever, but they are amazing. I wouldn't have paid the retail price, but Best Buy had made a mistake that weekend on the open box stuff. I got them for $1700 and the SW5 sub for $375, so the price was not terrible. I hate the lack of inputs, but what's worse is the lack of advanced customizable controls. However, they sound so good for the price I paid that I decided to keep them. The AVR had nicer lower mids and also better bass due to a larger sub. Everything is a compromise...

Spectacular review as always. Lots of details that matter. This Sony system with a phantom center via four speakers is really compelling to me. Would definitely consider it for a living room. One hundred percent agree on the subs. They need a really nice update aesthetically at minimum.

Great review. This looks like a winner, and I appreciate you calling Sony out on their shortcomings (not including a 100% necessary sub is like McDonald's selling you a Big Mac and offering a couple stale, ugly bun options for an added fee). With the HT-A9, I believe you said Sony warned that ceilings higher than 12 feet might present a problem. Is this true for this system? Is this true for ALL upfiring speakers?
@andrewrobinsonreviews8 ай бұрын
I'd say high ceiling heights become a concern with most upward-firing speakers.

We went full circle, lets welcome back the HTiB that is way more sophisticated. I believe this is way way way better than a bloody array of small drivers horizontally. I own the Q990C and this is what I hoped for. I wished that Sony would have a more neutral tuning like the Samsung though. Also a center channel would be great.

Andrew. Was thinking about getting the HT-A9 since it’s a cheaper option. Would you note any significant difference between the two systems that would make you lean towards one over the other? Thanks!

I would get this given my experience with both systems. This is a bit of a step up. Maybe not night and day, but better. If you have spotty or cluttered in-home networks, this is the ONLY choice.
