Pretty cool for a guy who isn't a drummer. He is a trained classical/jazz pianist, and also a decent guitarist. I was fortunate enough to get to see them live in Dallas 12/9/21, and it is mind blowing to watch him. The interaction in between him and Eugene (Bass) is incredible! This angle hides some really cool features of his set up. He runs a remote Hi-Hat low,(Like super low, maybe 14" off the riser) left in front of where a HH stand would traditionally be located. They mic it with a directional mic. It's placement allows it to be more isolated from the sound of the rest of the kit. I never fully understood the function of the pedals to it and the kick. He either works 2 pedals on 1 foot at times, or it can somehow be coupled/uncoupled to the L kick pedal. With that, add in the unorthodox heights and angles of the various pieces... The entire group is just next level in their musicianship and live execution.

Not only does he swap freely from right to left hand “dominant”, he swaps his feet as well. The double bass stuff is definitely right foot lead, but there’s moments in the song (the shorter fast tempo almost punk style groove) where he uses strictly the left foot and not his right at all. The kit setup, the freedom of movement, it’s insane. Other may be flashier, faster, but there is not wasted motion and the creativity is out of this world.

I find Vlad to be a fascinating insight into musicianship. I feel like _most_ drummers started off as kids, and while that can certainly have its advantages, it can also come with its own little "bad habits" like always playing in a certain style. To my understanding, Vlad (who is a conservatory-trained pianist) did _not_ drum as a child, or even in college. Rather, afterwards, already as a professional musician, he was in a band whose drummer left, and they needed a new drummer, and he decided to learn to play and fill in. That wasn't really all that long ago... maybe four or five years, I think? In other words, maybe this is what you get when you have someone who's already trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of music-not just theory and the like, but also in how to practice, how to learn, how to make good use of time-and train them in drums from the ground up, with that foundation already built. Food for thought, anyway, maybe?

Vlad (and Dmitry Kim before him) are a big part of why they never replaced their rhythm guitarist when he left. It seems like they basically split that part of the musical complexity between Roman working harder as lead guitar, Eugene with his 5 string bass and tapping skills, and incredibly sophisticated drumming that really helps to fill out the band's sound. I've seen reactors think Vlad's ghost notes were a shaker haha.

What amazes me the most with this drummer is the dynamic he has, you hear the ghost notes very clearly, you hear all those nuances on the snare. It is brilliant! If I am not mistaken he has a jazz background. And good work noticing his work on the slower part. There is so much space in the groove, yet the whole kit is being used. It is at the same time very busy and spacious :) And if he was not talented enough on the drums he plays piano too, there is a recording of him playing Rachmaninoff flawlessly.

I know next to nothing about *how* to play drums...but listening to Jinjer, and seeing Vlad live earlier this month, it occurred to me that he plays "lead" - since Jinjer doesn't really employ guitar or bass solos, it's as if each member plays lead at all times. I get that you were amazed by his stick work, but surprised you didn't say much about his footing! I was waiting for you to realize he played the punk bursts before the big blast with his left foot.

The band credits him for composure of most of the guitar work on their newest release .

This guy can also play classical piano. I'm talking Rachmaninov, not your everyday Für Elise or Bach Prelude 1. I think he also plays guitar. He's the whole package. :)

Great reaction Andrew! I love Vlad's drumming, Mediator and just all of Jinjer's work! I did not like growled vocals before I heard Tatiana last year and didn't like hers immediately, but their music, her singing, her lyrics and then her growling won me over so much that she's now my favorite vocalist and Jinjer my favorite band. Thank you Andrew, for bringing the fantastic music of Jinjer to more people! ❤🖤🤘

I grew up with the toned-tom-heavy drummers like Peart, Bruford and Weckl. Recently, Gavin Harrison is a favorite. I have to say, I'm intrigued by the new crop of drummers with a flat kit and loads of cymbals. I like the new paradigm.

What is Jinjer? Jinjer is A guitarist who plays rythm and lead like a boss - Roman A drummer who is a classically trained pianist and a guitar player who picked up the sticks when his last band need a drummer and is self taught on the skins - Vlad A guitarist who took up the reigns as the bassist - Eugene And absolutely last but not least Tatiana. A self taught vocalist that never ceases to impress their fans as much as she does her own band members. Jinjer is a 10+ year plus evolution of a band that has seen 13 different members that has culminated into what I refer to as a supergroup.

I think the story goes that he joined Jinjer and then basically took over the song writing, the music part at least, Tati still does her own vocals. So it's almost like the songs are now written around the drums. Which we'd all agree is the way it should be ;)
