The dude put out an amazing short video as a response to people accusing him of speeding up his videos. It was him playing one handed whilst holding a tablet with a stopwatch counting up to prove the video wasn't sped up and at the end he looks into the lens and says "if you people spent as much time practicing as you do hating, you'd be able to that, but you don't so you can't" or words to that effect. I use the split finger grip all the time. I broke both of my hands and wrists some time ago and have a tendency to drop my sticks. The split finger grip on my right hand is something I switch to predominately on cymbal work so I don't throw my stick accidentally and primarily because of the great speed I can achieve for quick responsiveness on cymbals. By having the fulcrum between my fingers, I can use the other three digits to manipulate the back end of the stick faster than with the standard grip. Hope that helps!

Thanks for sharing your view and impressions on this mad guy, Andrew. I'm a drummer, I've been following El Estepario Siberiano ("The Siberian from the Steppe" or "The Siberian Stepperian" in English) for a while and he was my 2020 drumming finding. I've never heard something this good with such a limited number of drum pieces. Incredible. It's too bad you can't follow his videos and streams on you tube since they're mostly in Spanish with the exception of some subtittles. In his videos he speaks about his different techniques, methods, his routines (this guy has been practicing 10 hours a day for the past ten years or so, every single day from 7pm in the morning, crazy routines). Another thing that amazes me is his sound signature and style. It's unique. Greetings from Spain. Cheers!

he also has a whole series of 1 handed drumming, usually playing heavy metal, and he is doing things like drinking a coffee, reading a book, or doing finger guns (for the double bass drum/machine gun type sounds). @uptoeleven Жыл бұрын
He has a video explaining how he manages to get that phenomenal sound out of an EAD10. The technique includes epic quantities of damping, removing most of the toms because they either block the sound or overwhelm it, and using crash cymbals as hi-hats. He does also do plenty of double pedal stuff but not for this song. Check out his "shorts" they are as outrageous as you'd expect given this video.

@ach You beat me to the comment. This was originally recorded by Mike Mangini. Portnoy left the band 3 years earlier. This tune came from their 2nd album with Mangini on drums. From what I read, the problem with the sound on the original recording was that they tried to recreate the drum sound on Images and Words and used drum triggers.
@LeonHaselbach4 жыл бұрын
@@dtfreak they definitely didn't use triggers on that record (they did on Images and Words). If so it would be the worst apply of drum triggers/samples in history. It's just a extremely compressed snare sound with a high amount of the bottom signal. They clearly wanted to get an 80s vibe of snare sound though. At that time his snare sounded live pretty much the same, too.

10:20 Time. He puts the stick, between forefinger and the middle one ; this gives the hand, good balance, on the left/right side of the stick, for better bounce, off the cymbal bell. Also, he doesn't need to alter the wrist angle, keeps his hand straight with the arm.

Andy, I don’t know if you see comments on videos this old, but I just wanted to say thank you for sharing these amazing reactions to drummers. I’ve recently discovered El Estepario and have enjoyed your reactions to his newer videos. I just happened to noticed I hadn’t watched this one. Just a side note about fulcrums…as a drummer of 30 years, I am nowhere near this Cat’s skill level. I’m not even worthy to hold his broken sticks, but sometimes I have to switch my fulcrum from my index finger to my middle finger (stick goes in between the index and middle fingers). This is due to nerve damage in my hands from botched bilateral carpal tunnel surgeries. It’s not often that it happens to both hands at the same time, but it does happen. Occasionally I’ll have to switch fingers or I’ll end up dropping my sticks. Usually happens if I didn’t warm up enough before getting serious behind the kit. I’ve had two neck surgeries in the past 2 years which has helped a lot, but unfortunately the nerve damage in my wrists and palms is permanent. We learn, we adapt, and we move forward in life. Thank you again.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Based on how I have improved over the last couple of months, I Totally see why that is working for him... Also, I recently subscribed, and wrote you a wholehearted suggestion to try the band Textures, if you want to see modern(ish) progressive metal done right and not as tastelessly as that Contortionist song you reacted to. Interested?

Please let me know where I can see Mike Portnoy play this song. As far as I'm aware it's Mangini on the drums.

Guys, I've checked with the friends who came with me to the gig, it was Mangini 🤣🤣 And not even sure they did that song... Was in London a few years ago 👍🏼
