I use Both, two kicks and or one kick with twin pedals. Two kicks is in my opinion the way as it should be but in metal music, but there are serveral limitations while touring: size (not every venue support a big drum riser or lack the room/space in general to fit it) tuning (without any very good drum technision or drum tuning skills the sounds 9/10 diffirent from the other. You can fix this with triggers but than you still have the limitations mentioned in size). Touring (most of the bands dont have big enough transport especially not when touring over seas. One extra kick is getting the space of one guitar cabinet. You have to choose and carefully consider what is a must have on tour or an extra). This is from my own experience as an over seas touring drummer. On tour or every other gig while not being a big band or support. One kick is the only way to go. There are exceptions ofcourse.

Funny seeing people with negative comments. Pete’s a highly technical thrash drummer. Plenty of other songs like Scumbag in Disguise that showcase his skills. And he’s one of the most precise guys in the new wave genre. He’s not an extreme blast beat guy.

The second kick drum is just for show. He uses a double pedal and only one kick drum. I guess you'd want to match the tones of both kick drums and that could be hard to accomplish on a touring drum set?
@krenwregget76673 жыл бұрын
I remember when Havok broke on the scene and I first saw their video for "Covering Fire", I knew these guys were awesome and that Pete was a total beast. He's not just fast, he's creative and his playing is tasteful, which sounds funny for a thrash drummer.
@johnwagner11684 жыл бұрын
I grew up with Pete in MA. He has a background in Jazz drumming when he started learning then transitioned into thrash. He users the double bass for show. He prefers the double kick so he only need to mic one drum. He’s an amazing drummer and you should check out his other videos . The sound on this one isn’t great.

It's more for show with the two, single bass pedal setup, so you can have two pieces of artwork that compliment the stage design. From limited experience helping out local bands, most of the time you're switching to a single drum for smaller venues, and going with the double pedal mainly for weight issues rather than space, as most of the time the other band members are standing still to play. But this guy has a surprisingly large kit, so it might also be for stability issues since that frame was dancing all over the place with those hits!
@hughneutron53034 жыл бұрын
little note to add. no two bass drums sound the same, ever. you can tune and tune and tune but it will be noticeable, especially in a venue rather then the studio. so micing one drum is MUCH MUCH simpler then two. i guess the equivalent would be something like the bass player running through two different amps. i mean, yea he COULD do it, but why?

He has the same technique as 90s Paul Bostaph (Dittohead, Serenity in murder etc). Hard hitting and precise. Also some bands share one drumset live. So it could be that Pete's own usual drumkit has only one bassdrum and he just played on the set of the mainact.

This type of drumming is more fun to watch with the entire band, to hear the drumming in context of the entire band. It's not technically challenging or flairy, it's just hard hitting and fits with the style of music, which is great, but that means it works best when listened in context of the rest of the song.

I think two bass drums can be played slightly faster since the drum head must return to where it started before being struck if it is to be struck again with the same tone following. I think. With a double pedal it won't have quite the same definition when played at that same speed.
@kraterkop4 жыл бұрын
So many drummers I hope you'll react to in the future. If you want the definition of ultra fast and tight drumming i'd like to suggest Lord Marco (Marco Pitruzella). Each of his videos makes my face melt and the way he makes it look like a walk in the park blows my mind

I tend to get better rebound and consistent sound with two bass drums. I'm not sure why anyone else does it, but I would wager it's those two reasons. It also looks cool, and that's all the really matters.
@Guppusmaximus4 жыл бұрын
I remember (possibly inaccurately) it was common place in the golden era of Metal to have 2 slightly different sized bass drums because you can accentuate fills at slow speeds and at high speeds you couldn't hear the difference in tone. For me, a double kick pedal on one bass drum was weird when it first came out because of the somewhat choked sound and lack of variety in tone. Hell, nowadays most drummers use triggers so you could probably just use a pad. But, I like this guy because it doesn't sound like he uses them.

Would you consider reacting to Dave Weckl’s opening tune on his teaching video “Back to Basics”? It starts with him alone for several minutes, then he plays with Chick Corea. He’s young back then - Dave is the most MUSICAL of drummers, along with Larnell Lewis. Sure he’s fast, has perfect time, technical skills...but it’s WHERE he puts (and doesn’t put) the pulse, and the dancing, that makes him such a unique musician. And I’ll bet he’d kill to have that hair back. I’ll be donating!!!

I can't play a double pedal but I can play two single ones ? probably because double pedals didnt exist when I started And I got used to two kick drums. And I don't play fast metal, just have the occasional triplet on the kicks. Respect to this guys stamina and accuracy .. Way above my limits but respect due .
