Not arrogance so much as supreme confidence. Love your take on these Drumeo vids. I’m a rocker girl at heart who was introduced to Prog music when I was around 4 (back in the early Seventies), and as such, ive always gravitated towards the rhythm section in music. Growing up in that time period, which was before I discovered heavy metal, my drumming heroes as a kid were not Bonzo and Keith - that changed around 1977 - I was drawn to drummers who were also accomplished percussionists in other genres, jazz being the biggest one. Legends like Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, Nick Mason, Stuart Copeland, Ian Paice, Neil Peart, etc.

these drumeo videos have become one of my favorite guilty pleasures. the whole "fish out of water" thing of throwing someone into a totally different genre is great. Its like being a kid and wondering "what what would happen if".... like what if you took a semi engine and put it in a tiny car (replace whatever your interest was). Anyway the videos are so much fun to watch-we're truly lucky to have them while our hero's are still around

You talked about him being an improvisational drummer which reminded me of an interview on Rick Beato's channel. Stewart mentioned a conversation he had with Neil Peart about all of air drummers at Rush concerts, and wondered how Neil attracted so many of them. Neil's reply was they know what is coming in the song because my goal is to play it the same way every show, Stewart's response was something like F#&k that, I always play something different at each show.

My only criticism is that it's not angry enough. John Otto puts in the rage and hits harder, literally, in the original and that's what numetal was back in the day.

As a non-musician, its hard to believe that he can just make up the drums like tis on the spot that work with the song but I'm guessing that the song structure here is fairly simple which allows Stewart to play around as much as he likes. His playing really altered the feel of the song for me with the change in dynamics and the ride bits. Very cool. As far as arrogance, to me its just that he is very confident about why he likes and does music so not much is going to phase him.

Would've loved to hear Limp Bizkit with the BD on 2 and 4. In the music store as a kid, and saw the compilation album "No Wave To Go." A picture disk with a dude surfing a leopard print with an ironing board = I had to buy it... And thus was my first introduction to Klark Kent's "Dont Care" song. Of course, his later work with the Police stands for itself (I often attempt to play "Synchronicity II" incorrectly). His solo work for The Rhythmatist (The opening 1:30 of "Serengeti Long Walk" was used by the weather channel behind the local forecast) and The Equalizer (music for the tv show) showed his unusual approach to the Fairlight... often with bells, pianos, and sometimes low strings turned into percussion. And i still occasionally play some tunes from Animal Logic II. What a fantastic body of music he has given us.

For a first time listen he was definitely just trying different stuff the whole time and of course he would fine tune any song he had to record or play on the road to perfection. But I'm with Stewart in general about having the mindset of just doing what's unpredictable for the song. But I think that comes after listening to a ton of different music and being able to predict what's coming so it's a reward for your brain to hear or create something more adventurous and boundary-pushing. A machine can hold a steady beat, like you mentioned in today's crappy hyper-perfectly produced music often is, and that sucks the soul out of the song.

See, if LimpDicks had this (and by 'this' I mean talent), I'd like them a lot more. I love Stewart's take. Arguably, I could say he overplayed it; but considering there's, really, nothing going on in the original to make me like it, I'll say he did the song more justice than that band ever could. My one issue with Drumeo is that they always pair a talented drummer with a band/style they're either capable of reproducing or have much more talent than the music being presented to them. They never give a drummer something above their skill-set. I would kill to see Lars Ulrich (or someone like him) in there with music from Terry Bozzio era Frank Zappa just to watch Lars cry his way through that. Or, take a very talented drummer and give them Mahavishnu Orchestra stuff. That could be interesting. Regardless, great video!
@ericbontheweb3 күн бұрын
I'd wager you're not a quarter of the drummer Jon otto is. And the drumeo segment isn't meant to make the drummers cry. They have videos of drummers learning harder songs, they just give them the actual track and give them multiple takes like when Mike portnoy played tool
@JasonSmith-lp6wg3 күн бұрын
@@ericbontheweb Understanding that KZbin is a flat-medium (meaning, tone is hard to convey) I, really, was trying to be funny. If that got missed, my apologies. As for myself, I haven't played drums since highschool. So, yes, you'd be correct: he is a better drummer than I. That he's a successful musician doing his thing, is great; I applaud him - and LimpDicks - for it. I do, however, think they're boring musicians making boring music. I've, often, found that people want to conflate their love for their band with that band's, actual, ability. As for 'making people cry,' again, I'm being humorous. To my point, I would like Drumeo to give their drummers some better challenges. Getting Portnoy to play Tool isn't a challenge as Portnoy and Carey are in a similar talent pool. Getting Portnoy - or Carey - to play something by Mahavishnu Orchestra would be interesting. Getting Otto to play Tool would, also, prove interesting. That you're upset with my assement, I don't care; it's not important, to me, that you like the things I like; and it shouldn't matter to you that I don't like the things you do. Just don't be so precious about it. My best to you.

@@ericbontheweb To your point, yes, they have talent. They couldn't be where they're at without it. Music that's complexly dense, with odd time signatures, stops, breaks, and atonality. (Trust me, when I put on some of the things I listen to, some people just look and go 'what the fuck, dude?") Heard Stewart Copeland in 1979 on their 2nd album and thought he was a hidden gem about to come out and shine and I was right. I understand he and Neil Peart had a great fondness for each other's talent and, of course, sense of humour. But when none of my friends were listening to the Police at that time I heard right away they had something special. Stewart is one of the great drummers/percussionists of our time, right up there with Peart - even though a different style. I don't rate drummers like some sort of BS top ten chart. Buddy Rich was amazing and fast, but Gene Krupa had a style I appreciated more. Talent is one thing, but style is everything. Without it, you're just another drummer. This contrasts massively with Wolfgang Van Halen's throw-himself-into-the-thing 5 or 6 takes to come up with something he's happy with - I was *so* impressed with WVH doing this. :) p.s. regarding Limp Bizkit, yes, Wes Borland is a massively influential guitarist (moreso than the cool kids will ever admit), but John Otto & Sam Rivers are the rhythm section that makes the crowd at a Bizkit show *bounce* like very few others. It's a shame that it took a couple of decades for Fred Durst to mellow into a reasonable human being, since his early behaviour led to the 3 musicians' great work being overshadowed & underappreciated.

I'm a funk rock/metal guitarist that started out on drums. Been into the funk/rock/metal thing long before Limp Bizkit came along... I mix those James Brown grooves and riffs with rock and metal riffs. The whole numetal thing was just a spin-off of the funk metal that came before it. Stewart doesn't have "it". He's trying hard to groove but he's just not that good at it, it's not his classic boomer rock style. It totally sounds like he's struggling, first he opts for a basic straight rock beat, then he tries to groove it more but the flow is jagged and it's not done well. If I was trying out drummers for my band? This guy would get the thanks, we'll talk and get back to you... We can't be good at everything in music, Stewie just isn't a good funk rock player.

I didn't like this episode at all from drumeo. I felt like he put no effort into it. Where most people write their cheat sheets at least give it a full listen or dick around.. I just thought it was terrible. And I do see Copeland as one of the best percussionists in the world yet this was awful

I think Copeland is kinda in that Ringo world. Whatever he gives you... you take. This was a bit of fun for him. It is a contrast to Portnoy spending 3-4 hours trying to learn Pneuma. But this here is a total different concept.

@AndrewRooneyDrums 100% right and on the other hand he could have been offendeded with what was given.. 7empest from Tool is what I would've offered him. Actually.. Andrew!! Make it happen!!! 🤣

This is literally how he recorded most of The Police albums, he makes it up on the spot. He is such a musical genius that he makes it look effortless

@QuantumBeeWellness you don't record on the first listen through it's impossible... I'm just saying he didn't put any sort of effort in for someone being so phenomenally incredible at what he does he could have given it a good listen to and put a cheat sheet down for bridge course versus time signatures etc just like every other drummer has on that show that's all I'm saying it was just disappointing

@@BrouseyThat's exactly how he recorded the albums and he has stated that fact multiple times, especially when talking about Every Breath You Take, he had no clue what was going on but never got a redo. He figured the song out when playing live

I don't understand why almost no one is criticizing this poor performance. It's as if Stewart is being held in high regard. But now let's be honest. This is really bad and simple drumming. This guy has no idea what he's doing and has no idea how to play this song. He was at the top of his game in his younger years with The Police, and I was a very big fan.

He’s never heard it before and is improvising in real time. I don’t think he was really feeling the song either. He was just screwing around.

Personally, I find it refreshing for different reasons, but I get your perspective as well. May I ask if there is any particular performance you would care to recommend as a prime example of great drumming?

Strong disagree here he did an amazing job he did an interpretation that was different but kept the general feel of the song in his style he just is a different type of drummer.

He clearly did not want to play it. 1 take, and a piss take at that. Terrible choice for a song for him to play.

Did you listen to Andrew’s analysis of him at the end of this video? To be fair, unlike most of the drummers on this series, he didn’t even listen to the song before giving it a shot. He just started improvising from the get go. Have to give him for credit for that, even if it wasn’t close to the original.
