@@dieselmunkeyI agree. Maynard is one hell of an artist, but when it comes to playing out a song like this (weaving between 6/6 and 6/5), the vocals are the easy part.

One thing yall don’t realise is that vocal chords are also an instrument. And it is limited by your physical abilities. You cannot just add an extra vocal cord to it or smth. The more limited your instrument is the more creative you have to be to capture attention and be interesting. “Just put lyrics on top” does not mention all the years of listening to different music and shaping your melodic vocabulary. Which in fact makes your instrument unique and valuable.

He was very gracious and down to earth. Shook his hand and he told me Adam Jones was chilling on a bench nearby. Went on the roller coaster and met Adam a minute later. He plays what the song calls for, whether it's straight 4/4, or something jazzy, or whatever. And I've seen a video of the end of music school or music camp for kids, where some of the kids cover a Tool song, and Danny is playing the drums for them. He's just so incredibly giving of his time.

They will never play there again lol it was a tiny venue "the K-rock Center" Probably the best time I've seen 'em though... the pit was amazing and I was able to get real close because of the relative smallness of the venue. They've had cooler effects and shit at other shows, but at a certain point it takes away from their stripped down live performances of the old days. That show was a happy medium so glad I went Today's lesson: from my experience there actually rarely are pits at tool shows lol

Far beyond music my friend... Mental health problems are exactly that... Mental.. problems of the mind which is usually caused by ego.. Using for introspection and learning who we truly are changes everything. Ibogaine is the most effective as it chronologically bring you through your traumatic experiences and you have your emotional response which Ultimately makes you Face your Fears.... unfortunately many of us don't even have a clue as to our deep fears as they've been buried.. If we were taught how to manage feelings and mindful of ego the world would be very different.... Everything we grow up in just feeds that ego... and what you feed...grows.

Ryan Walker Exactly, that’s why on any real drummers greatest list it’s full of modern jazz drummers, like Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers and so forth. While Danny is my favorite. I do know a whole bunch of drummers who are better. The quick and constant time signature changes and independence required to play it is incredibly difficult. That’s why every single higher education institute in drumming has modern jazz/jazz fusion as its curriculum. It is the hardest form of drumming. Here’s a link to a 16 yo girl from Japan playing a solo who is better than Danny because she’s a jazz fusion drummer practicing that style since 5-6 Simply put, she can play everything he plays with ease while the same can’t be said in reverse without him practicing. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGWwY4lmpLudmJI

Depends on what you classify as GOAT far as pure skill both Mikes from Dream theatre are nuts, Ray Hearne from Haken is one of my favourites. Prog in general has some amazing drummers, but some people don't get into prog much so that's why I ask what is the GOAT defined as.
@owenreihart9082

Michael Berresford i think when your talking goat you kinda gotta classify as what can’t this guy do really as a drummer and a lot of drummers would struggle I think with some of tools music just because Danny Carey is one of a kind and that’s what I think makes him the goat I feel like he could play pretty much anything
@michaelberresford4291

@@owenreihart9082 That is why I specifically targeted prog drummers in general, Danny being one himself. I'm pretty sure Portnoy and Manguini speak for themselves DT being the monster it is, but I swear Ray has been getting more technical with every album and I think he could be one of the greats in the future. I just don't think Haken is gonna be nearly as big a Dream Theatre unffortunately.

Michael Berresford yea I got you I just personally think Manguini is more of a technical guy who just plays well but doesn’t do anything to really stand out that’s just my opinion and I think you gotta sort of stand out in order to be considered the goat as well haha! Danny’s definitely on my Mount Rushmore of drummers. He’s uses a lot of electronics, including a Korg Wavedrum (What was making that Tabla sound), the Mandala pads (The pads are all around him, which he co-designed), a Roland Handsonic (The circle looking pad with different zones, by his stack of modules), and that big Marimba looking thing behind him, is called a Marimba Lumina, but I believe he only uses it in one song, which is Invincible. He studied a lot of Tabla with Aloke Dutta. From what I’ve read, Danny’s takes drumming, very spiritually. Neil Peart, John Bonham, and many others, were big influences on Danny. Imo, he’s the best living drummer today, now that Neil Peart is now with us anymore. But, that’s just my opinion. The whole Fear Inoculum album is really just a Danny drum solo, lol.

The instrument he has programmed to sound like the tabla is a Korg Wd-1 wave drum, his pads are Mandela pads they have 128 strike points arranged in 7 concentric circles and has 2 synthesizers he uses to program and tune the drums to whatever he wants. The huge curved keyboard is a Marimba Lumina, it uses the keys to define the strike zones and are played with special color coded mallets as normal mallets won't work. Danny easily makes the top 5 all time greatest drummers. Enjoyed your reaction and insight, subbed to see what comes next. ✌🤘
