I had the pleasure of taking a weekend of lessons with Kai a couple of years back. You definitely got that that practicer part right; he said that he still, even after 40+ years of playing the drums, aims to practice an hour every single day, with mirrors in front of him, and both the left and the right side of him, on a practice pad, just working on his hand technique. And you could really tell that. You're also spot on about him being such a nice and a humble guy.

Then I have at least one thing in common with Kai. I've always felt it was foolish to start learning a new skill, especially one that uses both hands like drumming, as a leftie. Why bother turning everything around every time I go to a lesson or a gig with a shared kit? I just learned the way most people play drums.
@marcel14163 жыл бұрын
I know little to nothing about drumming, but I play Snooker and Billiards as a hobby - and I for myself as a right handed person play Billiards with my left hand - and I know why: I am left eye dominant, so when I put a queue under my chin my left eye is dominantly producing the picture to my brain (and centers it around it, perspective wise) and my right eye is completing the picture. I don't know if that might be a factor with drumming, but I know a lot of sports rely on the dominant eye rather than hand dominance. But even if this doesn't matter to drumming - Kai is a beast :D
@LordBaktor3 жыл бұрын
@@marcel1416 I would assume eye dominance is not a big factor in drumming because I spend like half my practice time with my eyes closed to feel my way around the drums rather than seeing it, but I could be a weirdo and everybody else in the world uses their dominant eye. What do I know?

Thanks for taking a look at the video. I was in the crowd and tried my camera for the first time that day, so sorry for the shaky hand and the sound.(I was too excited to watching him and got distracted sometimes... ) The cut in the middle was tho the fact that I didnt know the song at that time and thought it was over... luckily i pressed the record button again. Kai told me afterwards that is was his first clinic outside of finland. Also since he was explaining and showing some techniques to the crowd (playing/talking/playing/talking...) he had to play the whole song out of the cold, what was quite challenging.

Well, compared to Wintesun, maybe, but Nightwishe’s drums are no joke either, and considering how seamlessly they blend into the songs and melodies is a testament to how well they’ve been put together and played. The previous Nightwish drummer Jukka was actually mentored by Kai, so also in that sense it makes sense how well his style fits Nightwish
@kurojester45133 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Nightwish isn’t as intense as Wintersin but the technicalities are still there. Kai adds his own flare. I remember when he first joined and I saw and interview and he said that some songs took a while to get down. That section in the middle of Storytime in particular took him a while to nail.
@erwinmulder13383 жыл бұрын
Sons of Winter and Stars is one song, with a little 'acoustic' guitar (no drums) section in the middle. It gives Kai some time to drink some water, wipe his face and check his kit. It's only a one and a half minute break though in a song of 13.5 minutes. Fun fact: he did drum some improvised bits over the part that is actually his break.

Same goes for Jocke Wallgren from Amon Amarth or Daniel Erlandsson from Arch Enemy, to bring in some swedish "counterparts"...I assume to play drums in metal and especially extreme metal, you need to bring a decent amount of talent and skills and tons of practice. it's the same song, it just has a little drum free part in the middle. gives poor Kai a chance to wipe off some sweat and have a breather, lol. his legs must be shaking after this one!

Hardly. He has to keep on going full set when they play at live, and Wintersun has some pretty fast and technical songs.

Lol thats Kai basically on almost every Wintersun song. 1 song 2 parts.
