Andrew, thanks to this critique, I will be re-working my portraits for my final Degree exhibition/assessment. I don't have many flat colour plains but I also don't have much in the way of highlighted character marks either. Glazing may help with giving fullness to facial features but I think my underpainting needs more development to make full use of the glazing effect. I only wish my tutors could have instructed half as well as you can in an hour. You have sold me on the idea of Patreon. Thank you.

What a great critique! It has made me go back and look at the portrait I am doing of my elderly mother-in-law. I am at the stage where I can make some great changes at your suggestion with this painting. What an honour for this artist to have such a wonderful and insightful evaluation and the momentous amount of ideas and positive insights for them to use! Thank you once again!!

This is the best critique session video I've seen so far. In any possible way: the composition, light and shadows, and overall way how to bring almost realistic portrait to realistic one. I'd love to get such a critique, but I did not finish any portrait yet. lol When I finish, I'm sure that my painting will be like that one - ALMOST realistic, but not there. To get such a shortcut in learning process from the master is priceless. Dianne is lucky )).

Andrew Tischler I love your work as always. As a fellow oil painter I would LOVE to go over creating your own custom brushes in Photoshop with you. You can have your Tisch dagger at the ready digitally as well as your older brushes that are missing a few bristles for that random texture. I made one to emulate your wave splashes. There is a perfect default brush that you can adjust for lots of canvas cover and it emulates a thick square brush. There is also a way to pull your colors as if dragged by a palette knife. If you would like to jump into this stuff let me know! o7 Thank you for all your lessons, work and instruction.

Great to see the potential with using digital tools alongside a solid traditional skillset. You can't tell me that Caravaggio or Rembrandt wouldn't have employed this to aud their decision making for their masterpieces. Great work Andrew and I think you're tapping into a rich vein here. It's like in the tech-comedy TV show "Silicon Valley" when two characters Dinesh and Gilfoyle are trying to point out flaws in their friend/boss's plans for the company and they have to come up with an acronym for "Richard Is Great But Y'know" so they say RIGBY at the beginning of every sentence. Hi Andrew. You really wanted to be kind to your student, however your criticism is quite justified. What I find more or less successful in this painting is the effect of light that it achieved, the handling of color and tones, it is quite deficient, let alone the drawing and the brushstroke. Really like I said, you have been very kind in your comments. Greetings, young master.

So cool you mention Raeburn! I've been obsessed with a raeburn portrait in my local museum and have even done a copy of it trying to learn better technique. His paintings really are fantastic but i've never heard anyone else ever mention his name. He seems to capture emotional drama in the face, especially in the eyes. Very cool to hear him referenced.
@neilcramond_fineartist
@neilcramond_fineartist 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Danny, for what it's worth I researched Raeburn a bit as part of my art degree, I copied his painting 'The MacNab' which hangs in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Galleries and Museum and part of my findings were that he painted alla Prima and some of his French contemporaries were impressed by this bold brush technique as their process would involve drawing and underpainting before final painting. Sir Henry Raeburn was in very high demand to paint the Aristocracy but he refused to leave Scotland and resisted the allure of moving to London and kept his studio in Edinburgh.
@DannySabraArt
@DannySabraArt 3 жыл бұрын
@@neilcramond_fineartist That is so cool! I've actually wondered if his style was alla prima or a combination of alla prima and layered painting. My local museum only has one portrait by him, but it's always stood out to me from our collection. Such a great period for painting and he really was masterful at his handling.. the ability to suggest and also to closely render. Ours is called "Portrait of Mrs. Andrew Hay" , c. 1795
