An intense and empathic string quartet: Andrey Rubtsov composed “Tree of Ténéré” in 2021 specifically for the Julia Fischer Quartet. The German star violinist Julia Fischer and the Russian composer have been friends for years. The Julia Fischer Quartet plays “Tree of Ténéré“ as part of a concert at the Rheingau Music Festival 2022. The work is an homage to an umbrella thorn acacia that was once thought to be the most isolated tree on Earth - the only tree for 150 kilometers in the desert of Ténéré in northern Niger. The Julia Fischer Quartet brings the tree back to life - in a metaphorical sense.

Oboist, conductor, and composer Andrey Rubtsov was born in Moscow in 1982. He is a graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Music, from which he received an honorary associate title. Rubtsov rose to fame as a composer; his Three Moods for Wind Quintet, to name but one example, is a standard repertoire piece played by ensembles around the world, and his compositions have won several prestigious awards. Amongst other Rubtsov works, Julia Fischer has performed his Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra - which the composer also dedicated to her.
Julia Fischer was born in Munich in 1983 to German-Slovakian parents. She received her first tuition on the violin at the age of three. A short time later her mother, the pianist Viera Fischer, introduced her daughter to the piano. At the age of nine, Julia Fischer began studying with renowned violin professor Ana Chumachenco at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. Julia Fischer succeeded Chumachenco in 2011, thereby coming full circle. Julia Fischer began touring internationally at the age of 15. She performed with the world’s greatest orchestras, recorded numerous albums and won prestigious prizes including the Gramophone Classical Music Award and the BBC Music Magazine Award.
But solo performances with ensembles weren’t enough. Julia Fischer is also a brilliant chamber musician. Together with violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, violist Nils Mönkemeyer and cellist Benjamin Nyffenegger, she founded the Julia Fischer Quartet in 2012.
