In this video, I talk about things you should know before and during footage tracking. It is important to be prepared before you even shoot your video. Everything you need to know in order to get the best camera track possible. I also show what is matchmoving and how you can track objects in your video on top of camera track. In this tutorial, I use pfTrack tracking software, but if you're interested how you can track footage in other softwares, here are links to my other tutorials:
Tracking in Cinema 4D: • How to ADD OBJECTS to ...
Tracking in After Effects: • How to ADD SNOW to you...

Good point about tracking stabilized shots... Yes, ALWAYS track the original plate. You can apply stabilization curves to the original match-move (modifying the camera aperture offset, not the camera curves), which only takes a few minutes, but re-tracking a modified plate can take hours or even days, or in some cases can be impossible if you don't know how to do it. The same applies to retimed shots, and repositioned pre-comps. I wrote my own modification tools in Maya to handle these situations, so when they came to me with a revised shot I literally returned a new match-move in 5 minutes. I could even shift the shutter timing on motion blur.

This seems like a REALLY good program for tracking. I’m currently a student in college learning Animation. Trying to focus on CGI work and composting. It can be really difficult being limited on the free programs I’m provided with. I usually use After Effects but still have issues with it. PFTrack seems REALLY good at tracking. I might look into it sometime.

It's good to know the PFTrack. But you can use the cinema 4d built in Motion Tracker. It's not that good us pf track but get the job done. I never used pf track. Used boujou tracker! And after effects for my compositing stuff and for 3D of course the C4D. I never used fusion! It's just depends on you. And what you can with this! But I agree with you the node base workflow is really good!. Hopefully we can see more octane tutorial from you. If you still reading this thank you and have a great day! Cheers man.

Hello Again Andrey ! I have a little tip, I think, to help you and maybe other people. What you said at 4:51 really struck me, as the "warp" feature in the stabilization of Premiere can be avoided if you use a camera that has a "Global Shutter", and not a "Rolling Shutter". You should be able to stabilize BEFORE the VFX if you have a Global Shutter, as the warping factor should be null. I'm pretty sure at 100%. Keep up the good work ! Love you !
@AndreyLebrov
@AndreyLebrov 6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you for your input. Now I would love to know how exactly is rolling or global shutter related to warp stabiliser? :)
@kelvinzer0614
@kelvinzer0614 6 жыл бұрын
Hello :) Well, the reason is that with a global shutter, each frames of the video are captured entirely in a single shot, making it something I'd call "pure progressive", like a real film, like a pellicule would do. With a rolling shutter, the images captured are sort of scanned from top to bottom, so when there is movements, the images are distorted. The top won't always match the bottom, so when we try to stabilize it, the image will sort of wobble/distort. I had a "BlackMagic Cinema 4K" camera that has a global shutter, and I was really amazed of how I had absolutely no distorsion when I was stabilizing my footages in premiere.
@kelvinzer0614
@kelvinzer0614 6 жыл бұрын
However, even though the BM4K has a global shutter, I would not recommend it ; its sensor produces a lot of artifacts, and is absolutely shitty in low-light environments. I would not recommend the BlackMagic URSA either. Their first releases had the same sensor.

Amazing as always Andrey, but,the fbx you import into cinema got: 1-A camera movement with the static trackers of the box Or 2-A static camera + moving trackers. If so, how can you replace the moving trackers of the box with a 3d model? It would be great to see the scene set up of objet tracking in a next video. Keep it up!

I have a question for your next q&a: my computer runs 32x Intel xeon 2.4ghz CPUs, 96gb of ram and I have one Titan X as gpu. When rendering in octane I barely reach 50% of gpu usage. Already checked high priority. The gpu reaches temperatures of 80-90 degree, could this be the problem? Never had that problem in my HP workstation but would you recommend switching to water cooling? Like, is the high temperature the reason my system doesn't give me more than 50% usage? Thanks in advance 🤟

Especially for the second footage, while tracking the box, I'm wondering how do you handle the trackers when they are no more visible (for example when camera can't see some green markers due to the box's rotation). Can you teach me how you approximate those trackers position ? Once again thanks for the tutorial and thanks in advance for the answer !

@AndreyLebrov
@AndreyLebrov 5 жыл бұрын

Thank you for your kind words :) it depends on the software you use for tracking really. Usually all these optical things can be specified during tracking (In pftrack at least). As for practicality, I personally would desqueeze and fix rolling shutter prior tracking. These processes are quite different to stabilisation ;)

Yeah there are two things that are crucial for any VFX, one is tracking the other is keying, and any of them might seem easy to you but to do it really well requires really well expertise. It's not just one button click and done, all auto - that stuff only works for software demos.

Hello Andrey ! I really love your tutorials. I would have so many questions for you,.. I'm trying to get better, but my computer is a bit slow at render time. I was using Maya before, and I'm trying to get back into it ; it seems that "Mental Ray" is now obsolete, and I'm stuck trying to learn Arnold as a renderer, which is a pain to wait for to get results, especially if I want to get better as an animator also. What would you suggest me if I wanted to make an animation, let's say a short movie of 15 minutes, but using a Toon shader that is capable of motion blur ? I'm pretty good in After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop. Compositing won't be a problem,.. but I don't want to animate all my shots (15 minutes) in After Effects like I did back in 2000. (I'm 43 years old ; early retired animator, trying to get back into it). :) I know my question may seem a bit vague. I really don't know what to do about Maya,.. Do you think I should try to learn Cinema4D instead of trying to dig back into Maya (with that Arnold switch?). Is Cinema4D capable of toon-shadering and modeling + animating some sort of cartoon short movie? Thank you. :-)

Hi, Yeah, Cinema 4D has pretty strong toon shading built in + it's very intuitive to learn comparing to Maya. As a person who switched from Maya to C4D I would definitely recommend it.
