I bought St Anger near release. I saw Frantic on TV and loved it cus it was different. I've always liked the album and found it very strange over the years seeing so many people get so angry and personal over a fucking cd. It's music, if you don't like it, don't listen. Definitely don't spend the next 15 years all over the Internet bitching and moaning like it's your band. The live versions of Frantic and St Anger they do now are very cool. Also well done AV for another great video.

Its always the way. It can be slightly outside your normal style and become very difficult. I have moments like it on drums when I sit and say 'why can I not play this?'. Its like anything. We all have moments like it at work, or school, or in sports or whatever. I had a guitar player that could downstrum sooooo fast and play anything in that style, but give him something simple that was a metalcore type pattern that required just 1 note amongst that pattern, he struggled. Crazy good player though but it wasn't ideal as we were playing metalcore ha ha.

Kirk used to write a lessons column for Guitar World magazine back in the 90's -- which really influenced the trajectory of my playing back then. There were several lessons where he called into question the riffs that James and Lars wrote -- especially the ones they would have him solo over. What really stuck with me is how he used those examples as teaching moments to illustrate the importance of professionalism, creativity, and outside the box thinking with regards to your role in the band. Dude is a player and a class act!

I honestly think that Kirk struggled with that riff because he had a brain lag at that moment, like anybody can have at a particular moment 'cause we ar human. Even if Hetfield plays rhythm better then Kirk, that doesn't mean that Hammet doesn't get riffs. He understands them and he also knows how to play them technically; he was just having a bad day, or a bad moment. I don't think any other explanation is needed. Truly. Brutal Honest here. 😀

Funny thing about being in bands - it's often hard to play a riff written by someone else in the band. People have their own stye and natural fingerings and if it doesn't closely align with your own style then it can be tricky to learn the other person's way of playing. It's both a blessing and a curse in most bands - it's the thing that gives your band variety in the writing and the unique sound of your music, but has that tendency to sometimes make it tricky to learn the riffs. You would think being in Metallica for >20 years would have got Kirk past that at this point, but I guess it still happens to the best of us.

Right, playing something that has already been written and fleshed out by someone else is completely different than recording your own riff for the first time. When you're playing your own stuff, you've gotta be constantly worried about if the riff matches the songs tone, the other band members playing styles, and adding your own feel. Doesn't matter if it's a simple or complex riff.

Great video! But rember lars trying to learn the "the shortest straw" Intro on guitar hero? I'm a Drummer and I exactly know why he couldnt get it right. When I first tried to learn the intro it was the same thong for me. Confusing pauses for seamingly no reason. Then I heard the intro woth a click and it all made sense (three notes I thought were directly together actually had a small pause in between etc.......). Explaining that would be a cool video too (if you get what I'm trying to say here haha)!

It was tricky for me, it took me a while. Many tries and fails but when I nailed it, didn’t have a problem with it anymore. It’s harder than it looks because (as you said) it is counterintuitive. Great vid. St. Anger is overhated and underrated, but I can understand why.

Andriy Vasylenko I played it like you the first few tries, but then I watched James explaining to Kirk and tried to do it like that and, even tho it was difficult, managed to get it right. Same thing happens to me in Master in the harmony part after the solo, and still mess it up from time to time.

ah, i see it now .. though I thought also the trick was that 3 and 5 were unequal # of times, even and odd # .. ie 7 (odd) zeros at the start, then 3 and 5 in odd/even # (4 and 3) ... or both even but different # - 5 and 3 ... oh, hope I can understand myself what I wrote .. but indeed, it's the notes in between that were fucking with Kirk

All of the Kirk&Rob Doodles on the Hardwired tour were garbage. So the Prince one doesn't really stand out. The section was obviously some schtick they came up with for a unique piece to play in every city. So yeah. Playing something completely new every night isn't bad playing on Kirk's part. It's bad showmanship on the entire decision-making wing of the band. I wanted to take a nap during the Doodle in Baltimore.
