I can't tell you how much I appreciate these videos.

Another great review and it’s good that you share my view of it being a solid game because, it really is. It’s clear the developer wanted to build a sequel that didn’t stray too far from the original but included some quality of life upgrades to the weapons and in particular the charge shot, and coming 30 years later, to me it’s a perfect homage rather than a sequel! I get what you’re saying when it comes to scoring and the lack of leaderboards but that isn’t why I play shmups a so this isn’t as important to me but I understand why you see exception in this department. The lack of options is something I have issue with also but overall I believe it’s one of the best new shmups to arrive this year. Thanks again for the review.

Thank you very much for always making the effort not to speak too quickly and to articulate well. It helps a lot people who aren't bilingual ^^

Thanks - probably the first time anyone from Scotland has been complimented on being easy to understand!

Just for fun, I played BioHazard Battle (Genesis), Salamander (TG16), This game, and then UN Squadron (SNES) in that order and Andro Dunos 2 fit right in. Truly a game out of time. For instance, when you mess up and lose all your power ups early in a run, a frustrated reset is a just a button away and without any loading so you get right back into the flow - as it should be!

I preordered the physical version, eventually I will be able to enjoy it until the end of time.

Another great video mate. Your reviews are always well written, structured and informative. I will pick up a physical copy of this at some point as, like you say, it looks solid. I also like that they’ve retained the Japanese aesthetic of the original. It might also retain some monetary value as a sequel to a Neo Geo title in years to come🤪

Awesome review! I did order the SWITCH physical edition and am patiently awaiting it's arrival. Can't wait to play it!

Eh, I think the game is awesome. I don't like bullet hell so having game like in the old days for Neo Geo is refreshing.

Very interesting review and very objective about pluses and minuses. I think this game is partly so well regarded due to the enormous sense of nostalgia it manages to evoke in certain people of (my) age, tied with the fact that the core gameplay is fun.

Are you meant to play shmups with the dpad or the analog stick?
@morsalty2 жыл бұрын
The vast majority of shmups are designed around digital control, so you should use a good D-pad, Arcade stick or keyboard. An analog stick is just a handicap

Is it just me or this ship we take control over looks like the one from Platypus game?

Did this get any updates? Totally agree on the scoring stuff - contiues stacking score is awful and renders the game obsolete.

The OST deserves an Oscar. Other than that the gameplay is solid as a rock and quite funny to play but it is a pitty that you´ve to be a hardcore gamer to unlock the 2 extra levels, and there are vey few options to customize the experience. The score system is also bad designed. Overall I give it an 8 out of 10.

I don't like it is 4:3 aspect. That should have been upgraded.

Amen on the critiques. It’s a very strong game, but won’t live on in the community’s memory for very long. Already seems to be yesterday’s news, in fact. A little strange to me that it has got off so easy when Sol Cresta took so much critical flak in the community.
@ShmupsOnSwitch2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I kind of feel the same. It's not that Sol Cresta is miles better or this is miles worse, but the often contrasting reaction does seem to me a little strange. I wonder if things will change as time passes...

Hello, will there be a review of arcade archives gaplus?

Not from me, I'm afraid. I'd love to try it, but just too much to else going on. I can say my experience with ACA's ports has always been good though.

Price is great too at around 20 bucks cdn too. Some modern smups charging 40-60 dollars is just too much IMO. Rarely do they have the content to justify the price.

I wish they went wide screen instead of 4:3. Its 2022. Nobody wants 4:3 unless it screws with the games display. Nobody likes stretched pixels but people want to use the whole screen too. If your going to stick to 4:3 for nostalgia strength why not move the info graphics outside the play field window at least?
@TheSamuraiGoomba2 жыл бұрын
I agree with moving the info graphics out of the play window, but a lot of those old aspect ratios stay the way they've always been because of game design reasons. Sometimes stretching gameplay design for shmups out to 16:9 causes the game to have way too much empty space. Which becomes a chore to traverse. Shmup devs mostly haven't figured out what to do to compensate for this.
