I agree with you 100%. I believe the reason why they opted not to offer it with a standalone version was because Google wanted the car manufacturers to implement this technology built into their vehicles. However Bitspice did come up with Automate which is what I have been using for the past year.

Tx Tim for this lucid video. Have been using Android Auto recently in my Elantra and have found it useful. It not only helps me navigate but also let's me listen to my fav music. Unfortunately my 2015 vehicle does not come with in-built AA. So I am using my mobile for that. Ty for explaining the different features. Ciao😊

As far as a mounting device for these phones, I bought one from an electronics store for $20. It's small, but comes with 2 different size magnets to put inside your phone (just put a piece of paper or a business card between the magnet and back of your phone). It works perfectly and I've hit potholes and bumps and god knows what else and the phone has never fallen off. For anybody who lives in the Atlanta area that might be reading this, I'm talking about Micro Center.

Tim Thanks so much for your Review on this. I am person who does not like distraction when I'm driving.I remember when signing up for FB and just all the distraction made throw my phone in back of car because you have enough to deal with when trying to make sure everyone is watching what they are doing. I like this but would most likely go with Voice because like I said real life situations would like not to have more issues especially Driving.Loved the in Depth Review.Thanks so much Deb.

Bert Fentress you'll have to buy an android auto headunit for that. around £400 for a decent one.

Bert Fentress yes that is correct. In fact you can have your Android Auto automatically launch when it connects to your car's bluetooth and then just use ok google commands to be totally hands free

shorey66 no special head unit needed. You need Bluetooth (which if you dont have buy a bluetooth to fm transmitter for a £10-£15) and just download Android Auto to your phone free from the app store.

In the UK if we touch the phone while driving its an automatic fine and points on your license. Even if its used as a satnav

In Oregon, too. You can tap or swipe once to start hands-free, otherwise it's a huge fine and basically equivalent to driving intoxicated

FEB 3 2018: I have a question. I recently bought a 2018 Chevy truck with Android Auto feature. I have been using Google Play, through my phone, to be used at work. Now, I am trying to switch over to Amazon Music. Over the past few days, I had created playlists on Amazon, but only a couple playlists showed up through the truck's dashboard. Is there ANY WAY to have playlists that I create on Amazon Music (NOT suggested or pre-made playlists by Amazon) show up on my truck so I can play them? This is all new to me. My last (new) vehicle was purchased in 2001 and lasted until NOV 2017. Thank you, Joe.

Everything in this app seems to overcomplicate everything Google already does in maps with voice commands. You can send text, make calls, choose music, have it read incoming text, turn off home appliances through maps. Is there any upside to using Android auto?

mxsalm Waze finds the fastest way. Not just the normal way most ppl would take. Also it gets its traffic info from users. So it's usually more correct. Plus it tells you if there are cops in the route you are taking. :)

ctk4949 Google maps pulls its traffic info from waze, but yes you're right waze does have a little bit more features/info that make it enjoyable and more useful, I personally didn't like the layout last time I tried it, I like Google better. The fact I could change the voice to c3p0 was awesome though

Hi Tim (or anyone), I like Android Auto in my Subaru Outback 2015. It does not have that full integration into the in-dash system... but works nicely simply on the phone. Question: While attempting to compose a voice-to-text reply, the app is able to complete my text but then when it asks "Would you like to send it, or edit?" Google or Android gets trapped and cannot understand me. I've tried "Send", "Send it" in a loud voice, and a soft voice. Nothing works and it just eventually says "Sorry". Maybe it's something with my Subaru microphone? Should I try a different text-to-speech engine? The speakers? It's running on the Subi bluetooth. Thank You, Frustrated in Wa St.

Tim Schofield, When I start to set up the Galaxy S7 Edge's Android Auto app to my Mini Cooper S convertible 2013 (no screen), the phone Google music app sound automatic connect to auto radio system then I try to connect the call (friend called me) I use the phone icon button on the steering wheel to receive a call. The phone call is OK (the music automatic off) then I turn off a call on the steering wheel. I lost music connect the auto audio. I try to attempt to solve this problem but no success. I watched your video, your phone music app and your car audio didn't integrate ?

You can just initiate commands verbally by saying "Okay Google". Fortunately he refrained from demonstrating that or else all our phones might have responded to his video.

Also, if your car supports Bluetooth, you can often initiate a voice command on Android Auto by pressing or pressing and holding your car's Bluetooth phone button.

This is a neat concept but fails in execution. Where is waze? No ability to adjust the size of anything is a huge fail. I have a 10 inch display in my car for navigation and phone interface... I don't need people 2 miles behind me to use my navigation and frankly on a 1920x1080 display its a huge waste of space. App doesn't recognize Pandora is installed. Zero user adjustable settings which is pretty common for Google Apps. Uninstalled. Maybe it'll work one day.
