I ordered an 8" Joying android 10 unit - the one with real volume and tone knobs. I selected it based on your excellent review and it's now in my 1999 Subaru Forester. Anybody having an older car, as I have will appreciate this model, since most of the other models rely on your having steering wheel switches, which of course I don't. It's a fabulous radio . Since I installed the sim card it has transformed my driving experience completely. I have about 80 movies on a flash drive, along with a great many audiobooks and several apps to make driving a great experience - a huge variety of entertainment on tap at all times. Thanks again for the pointer toward the Joying radios!

Hi Stuart hope you can answer this one, ordered a Joying Android head unit which arrived, I ordered a dab usb extra for it. The installer says the dab radio won't work, he says the Chinese usb radios are rubbish. It was something I really wanted and also the reverse cameras on the Chinese units are poor it says 1080 on the camera unit but that is the part number that's the way they get round it. Hopefully you can reassure me of both as it's booked in for fitting next week.
@SaabUnleashed3 жыл бұрын
Hey Andy. There's a lot of strong opinions around head units, especially Chinese ones. This is mainly because of the massive variation of quality available and he's probably trying to cover himself. DAB is easy on the Android head units because the USB adaptors are essentially plug and play, you just need to download the app. Obviously the antenna plays a part in the signal quality, but that's the same for any head unit. I have aftermarket reverse cameras on every one of my cars. Even branded head units use cheap reverse cameras. It doesn't need to be 1080p for you to be able to park your car :)

@@SaabUnleashed thanks Saab . So, do you think, a 9 inch Atoto 6 PF is okay 👍 to replace my xtron ? I am not completely satisfy with the back camera function on xtron... I installed Atoto 6 for my wife's car...and it's amazing how the reversing function works..able to adjust from the head unit

Very informative video! Are you aware of any Android head units that allow you to mount the screen separately? In my 1999 Subaru I can mount a radio chassis - either single or double DIN but it would place the screen way down out of my line of sight while driving. I have plenty of room on top of the center dashboard to mount a " to 10" touchscreen unit, so long as it doesn't have to have the big box mounted in the same location.. Many thanks for any pointers.

Yes, Joying units have a ribbon between the screen and the main unit. Some Idoing units also have this function

If you have playstore on your head unit you can install apps. I believe you can even sideloa0d apps on an android auto

be better if they made a headunit that just mirrors your phones screen with out having to keep pluging it in and out something like wireless dex on samsung as having to plug your phone in and out of the car stereo is a pain and put me off buying something like this maybe the do make something like this but I'm just not aware..anyway i still enjoyed the video thank for the info.

More expensive head units include wireless phone connectivity, in fact, you can buy adaptors that make the cheaper wired head units wireless too

Thank you!! Perfect video with great presentation. Glad you didn't choose high end units. I'm behind on tech and was getting very confused while shopping. Wasn't sure the difference and couldn't figure out what was really going to work for me. I wanted maps, so went from thinking built in GPS was necessary. Then Android Auto seemed like the modern go to. Now, thanks to your video, sound like I want an android stereo. So confusing. Thanks!!

Thanks for the clear explanation. You mentioned the use of an android head as an Android Auto head. Is there any way to configure an android tablet connected to the car radio via Bluetooth to act as an Android Auto head so some other driver may use it with his phone?

Why stereo installers don't want to put in Android units, what is really going on
@JensGraikowski2 жыл бұрын
I didn't even know there was such a thing as an Android Auto head unit. I thought they were all Android head units and some had Android Auto on them. Theoretically speaking an Android Auto head unit should be far cheaper, since all it does really is mirroring your phone. All the processing is done on the phone. Basically that is just what I'm looking for. All I want is to have Android Auto in my car without getting the phone out, so the head unit should connect to the phone wirelessly. And it fit into my Renault Megane CC (2011). Any recommendations? Cheers! 🙏🏽😎

Honestly I find the costs of of either to be quite similar, so you might as well go with the Android head unit for more features. As for which player fits your car, is yours the one with the joystick by the gear shifter? If it's the case, then it's a bit tricky.
@JensGraikowski Жыл бұрын
No, @@tiadaid. No joystick. 😉

Just wondering , i have got myself ng 9-5, head unit going to be first up grade . But yes big but, am torn between px5 good fit, but the joying 10.1 is really appealing to me , with top buttons inoperative on the dash, plus extra space existing above standard screen . Guess size matters pardon the pun. Be grateful for advice, Love solution to 3rd brake light, but wish I knew how you did light 🏮 🍸

Thank you for sharing this. It seems that you focused on the mainstream usage but perhaps left out a couple of key facts. Android Auto is pretty pointless and also overpriced compared to Android Head Units. Frankly, AA is just a glorified SatNav :) Working with these units down to the hardware level, our experience is that very few consumers realize that many of these so-called branded Android Head Units are built from poor materials and weak configurations, resulting in an immense loss of sound quality in your car and poor handsfree experience. Luckily many of these head units can be modified to perform on a freakishly good level, delivering outstanding audio and user experience. But it's clear that no manufacturer feels it's worth the effort. We would add that the best thing you can do as a consumer, is to aim for AHU's that use an optical or fibre-out connection, as this way the sound quality loss will be minimal when sent your external audio hardware. Unfortunately, these head units aren't very cheap.

Ok so you an installer?? So if Android units are not good, why great reviews, and no issues about how long they last... I have an 08 dodge nitro want to change my unit, but have Android 11 and need a stereo that will update with my phone, so what am I supposed to get?? Can't find anything but Android units, and I need a 7inch min screen for I have a visual impermanent...can you guide me

@@anamarin6475 we're not installers and it sounds like you didn't understand our reply. Android Head Units are great if used correctly. Take the time to research and educate yourself and then make an informed buying decision. This video offers great insights and is aimed at the average consumer. Unless you have spent thousands of dollars on aftermarket car audio equipment, you will be just fine with most Android units currently available on the market.

I bought an Xtrons unit because of your videos. I HATE it. The user interface sucks. Screen dimming is a joke. 3rd party launchers like AGAMA don't work with some of the built in apps (like the stock media player) and there are no upgrade/update files to keep the unit up to date. My security patches are dated October 5, 2019. Do you know how to fix these things?
@SaabUnleashed3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that. Screen dimming reacts to the illumination wire which should be connected to your headlight switch. That will automatically dim the screen when you turn your headlights on. Alternatively, AGAMA launcher has dimming set to the time of day, so you could opt to use that. I don't use the stock media player. The whole point of having an Android unit is that you can install your own apps. Regarding updates - that's normal.

@@SaabUnleashed Here's another issue. When I was poking through the settings, on one of the EQ pages there is a setting for EXT AMP (on/off). I don't have an external amp, so I turned this off. About a day after I installed my head unit, I noticed that my radio reception had turned to rubbish. I arranged for an exchange of the unit thinking it was bad. I got the new unit, went through all the setup, and the radio stopped working again. Turns out that the EXT AMP setting controls the amplifier of my car aerial. Kind of a dumb place to put that setting.
