Just bought the parts to try this out today and it works surprisingly well. Only a few issues that will probably be fixed soon. First off, if you wish to implement this in a car stereo system, (replacing the entire head unit for this setup) there is absolutely no way of changing the volume level , unless I am missing something. Maybe an external knob to trigger a change in the volume level. Second of all, I've found that Pulsar, a music player, is the only app that you can use on Android Auto that will actually let you play music stored locally on your phone. Also, maybe it might be better to step up the screen resolution to a 1024x600 screen resolution. This might be just a personal opinion, but I think the extra pixels will make the interface look better. ( I'm currently using the official Raspberry 7 inch Touch screen). Although the official touchscreen would probably look more aesthetically pleasing with the black bars surrounding the borders compared to other screens without them if implementing into a 2 slot DIN for car stereos (leave some holes in the side edges). But I can't wait for bluetooth to be fixed and I will await further updates. That's all I've experienced so far. Thanks so much for making a video about this. Have been thinking about doing something like this for my car ever since Android Auto came out.

Also, as a heads up for you and others reading, there was a new release today and the guy is going on a week break now, but he says the Bluetooth is in a basic working state (still a few bugs I think), and he's also figured out the stutter in the audio playing and some people says the map works better now too. There are other videos that show how you can integrate a rear camera with this and have all the function of android auto (which is different than an android tablet because it is connected to your phone for all internet and calling purposes) and better than a phone because you can permanently mount it in a convenient location in your car and not worry about hands free/ cell phone laws.

Running AA on a tablet isn't running your phone calls and controlling your communications, just running in standalone mode and you either need to tether it to your phone or pay for another mobile data service line. In order to get full phone integration on a larger screen you need to do this or buy a $300 in dash head unit

Your additional hdmi lines in config.txt seem a bit off. It appears that you are setting the HDMI mode twice (first to 640 x 350 85Hz, then to custom with the cvt line), and you are missing an equals sign in your hdmi_cvt line. It's hard to argue with the results, but it may be worth checking into.

Any suggestions on the power adapter, from the car's 12V to the Pi's 5V? It would be nice to have good connectors. Also, what about shutting down correctly when power gets switched off in the car?
@Honeypot-x9s6 жыл бұрын
Clodoveu Davis most phone chargers should work a treat.. however if your looking for something more discrete to wire into fuse box with a tap, Look for dash cam power tap adapters.. ideally you want 2.4 amp supply.. but 2.1amp will still work, I wouldn’t go below 2.0amps though then risking not having enough amperage to supply everything properly. As for wiring in so it turns off with the ignition you have to play around with a multimeters and see what fuses you can tap into that supply 12V with ignition that isn’t heavily loaded. Personally when I tapped into those I use interior lights for low power taps like a tablet or dash cam.. because only adding 10-15 watts to the line at very most and that’s barely anything for a line that isn’t at risk of being overloaded.. and interior lights are usually not noisy... which can help with keep the supply power stable..

Be aware: if you dont connect it always to the internet you need an additional real time clock RTC. And then be careful with the power supply, it doesnt run just on USB, because the pi needs 5.1 volt stable. Im on my third power supply now, and im still getting a low voltage error and a unstable system. I have this Setup, but i was always trying to build my own software because i only need only mp3 playback. Got it done with python and Qt5 on raspbian, but boot times are difficult to optimize. So maybe using crankshaft is an option, otherwise you are in the -compiling linux kernel- world, which is pretty geeky
