For all the people calling it ugly, remember that this is Polestar's skin of android automotive. They chose the layout and car UI icons, and Google is providing the OS and functionality. Other manufacturer's versions will likely look better

Yes, this is just like phones! Drives me nuts how everyone seems to buy one product with a wild skin on it, and think all android devices are exactly the same as it.
@MrGamelover232 жыл бұрын
@@rolfathan to be fair, that's a pretty reasonable assumption because have you seen Windows computers? They all look the same. iPhones all look the same. The idea that every Android phone has a completely different user experience and look to it is a complete paradigm shift from most personal computer devices

I still can't believe aftermarket headunits with android automotive are still exclusively in the realm of no-name brands that feel like risky buys. Meanwhile it's good enough to be built into cars themselves. Come on, Sony, Pioneer, JVC.

I watched a video of the new Cadillac Lyriq. That is Caddy's new fully EV SUV coming out next year. The shot of the car's dash showed only Android Auto, but not Apple's Carplay. WHich was interesting though I am sure that Carplay will also work on the Lyriq, because USA. I am an Android guy and probably always will be. I am now too deep in the Samsung ecosystem. The Polestars that I have seen are great looking vehicles. Also, thanks for another great video.

This would be really great for people who don't have a modern head unit built into their car and add a tablet as their head unit or a better option for the third party head units. It would be cool if anyone could install this on their own hardware. Obviously some integrations would require greater user modifications, but would be an improvement over the current android head unit options imo.
@iagobkstar2 жыл бұрын
... except you can do exactly that already and even before Android automotive was released. There are plenty of Chinese headunits that work like a charm, have Android Auto/Carplay integration, but also standalone GPS and apps that you can use by either using a 4g SIM card modem or tethering wifi from your phone. This is bringing nothing new to the market, only tightening Google's control on Android for cars

What we really need is an Open Source and Privacy respecting standard OS which is the default for all cars. After that, the owner of the car can decide if they want to give all of their data to Google/Apple... Also: Physical hardware kill switches for the microphones in the glove compartment, for example.

One thing that has annoyed me about Google assistant on the phone in recent years, is that you can give it a voice command e.g. "call John Smith" or "Navigate to Safeway", but then if it wants you to make a choice regarding which number or which exact location, it just chimes and expects you to choose from a list on the screen. Alexa on Echo Auto is much better about keeping up the voice conversation and reading you a list of choices if needed. I hope they fix up Android automotive so that it doesn't require you to read and choose from the screen, if you prefer to use spoken control while driving.
@DougHolmes3 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it make more sense for Google to offer the existing version of AA to car manufacturers, with an extra panel for car info? You could even run it off your phone in the car. This does seem somewhat redundant.
@KawshikAhmed3 жыл бұрын
From what I learned Car Makers wanted a infotainment OS that they can skin how ever they want just like phone makers do. This OS uses many of the same code of phone centric AA.

From the comments below feels like you did not get what this is. There is nothing to do with your mobile. This is not an app to see your mobile on the car screen (for that refer to applecarplay and android auto). This is the OS of the car itself. Instead of a manufacturer specific OS this is made by google and controls THE CAR. eg is the system that controls your light, door locks, driving modes, wipers, all the ADAS, the climate control, your seat settings etc... so instead of what the manufacturers always develop independently to run the car google is trying to become the standard for the industry. The potential for this is ENORMOUS and google assistant and google maps are just the surface of this. You can ask google to bring your seat forward and the car will do it. You can ask google to start the wipers and the car will do it. Asking if this works with apple carplay (and yes you can mirror an apple phone if you want) means you have not understood what this beast is doing. All the setting of the car (including all the hardware) are managed by android automotive. Fully customisable - app can be added - can be updated for ever (making virtually the car OS looking always fresh). This is a game changer and I don't get what applecarplay matters on this discussion tbh!

I can't understand the omission of some of Google's own apps. Where's Google Podcasts? Why do I need to use a 3rd party podcast app? 2022 Volvo doesn't have satellite view in Google Maps, and is missing some of my saved locations. I can't send a location from my Pixel 6 to my car for navigation. Despite being supported by AAOS, 2022 Volvos have no support for Google Calendar, where you might have an appointment and its location stored. KZbin Music lacks the ability to sort artists or albums or jump to a particular letter, yet is limited to displaying only 99 artists or albums. And even the apps that have made it through the process and into the play store are buggy and lack functionality that they claim to have. The potential is there, but the promise is sorely lacking.

I've now had my Polestar 2 for a month and I'm not impressed with Android Automation: - Sign recognition / Google Maps very often have incorrect display of current speed limit. Can e.g. decide to jump to show 50 km / h signs on the motorway where there are no signs and 130 km / h is allowed. Conversely, it can also find to show 90 km / h in the center of a city. VERY ANNOYING! - Seats are not always adjusted to my profile even if it is the correct profile shown on the display. - The adaptive lights do not always dazzle down for oncoming traffic. - Very often you can not start playing TIDAL. Remedy by starting DAB radio, and then return to TIDAL. - Audio often disappears even when full internet coverage is displayed. - Occasionally shows too low battery level to start the air conditioner even though there is plenty of power.

But! android auto is poor, the routing on maps is poor, quite often AA just stops working for no apparent reason. My VW polo will offer me three routes. Google generally offers 2 at best, mainly one. Admittedly the VW does not get it right, but there lies the issues. The VW OS allows me to create a route that can be stored, like "go to work". You see, driving to work everyday means I have probably done it in every which way, meaning I have become the expert in driving to my work. Google on the other hand is bad, meaning if I listened to google maps, I would drive 6066 extra miles each year, just going to work and back? if everyone used google just think of the extra CO2 this means? Why do I need routing? traffic info, nothing more nothing less.
