I was raised in an age when you had to look behind you when reversing a car and you could find your way around a new city using a map and your inbuilt sense of direction. Now my younger friends can not drive 2 miles without following instructions from their phones. Dont fear the dawn of Artificial Intelligence, but be aware of surrendering your own good sense (s)
@KyleMorrisonАй бұрын
But could you drive across the country with very little planning? There is a bit of a reliance you must buy into to elevate what you are capable of doing. Youth may not be able to navigate their own town very well without their phone but a reliance on technology also boosts what they are capable of with technology. I think it is best to have both a base understanding of what you are capable of without technology, but focusing on what someone is capable of without it is just shortsighted. Do you look down on someone with bad handwriting or who can’t write cursive? Why if those people can type way faster than they could ever hand write a letter? People get caught up focusing on lost skills after technology. I still know people who believe that everyone should learn to drive a stick shift. Do not get lost holding onto the past. Technology progresses. Skills change. It isn’t a bad thing and has been happening for centuries.

The killer app here is allowing for natural conversations between speakers of different languages. Obviously if both persons are wearing such glasses, they can simply converse in subtitles, where each user sees the other's words instantly translated on the lenses. That will be incredible. In the case where only one person has the glasses, it's a little more complex because the glasses will need built in audio speakers. After you speak the glasses will need to translate to the other person's language and play that via those audio speakers in the glasses. It would be cool if it also used your own voice (which Google has shown it can do). I hate Google's business model but there is no question about their technical prowess.

Me too. 😁 I can't speak for the Google ones they are teasing here, but I own a variety of XR glasses. They don't do near the same thing, but they are similar in terms of hardware I'm sure. XREAL, Viture, RayNeo, Rokid, and now Asus have been dabbling in the digital output glasses space. I can vouch for three of those (XREAL, Viture, and Asus) all supporting prescription lenses. However, you need to get them crafted by lens manufacturers. Side note, you can also get custom lenses for most VR units (PlayStation VR, Meta's Oculus Quest, HTC Vive, Valve Index, etc). I use HonsVR mainly, which have been working really well for me, but some local eyecare places may be willing to get some crafted for you. If you go that route, you'll want to provide them with the samples that come with the XR units if provided or have them specially requested. And of course, with most of these, if you don't have the money or patience to wait for custom lenses to match your prescription, you can always just put the XR glasses over your prescriptions. It'll be a bit awkward and you may want to only do it indoors at home when strangers aren't around, but it's honestly not too bad. I'm doing it for my Asus AirVision M1's while I wait for custom lenses.

This is another failure akin to Google Glass. I don’t need optical lenses, and the last thing I want is to wear them unnecessarily. While these glasses might be useful around the home, privacy remains paramount. You know, the one problem I see with this product, is basically the same problem they already had 10 years ago with Google Glass and the same problem Apple has with their Vision Pro. They need to construct special situations to artificially create demand. Most people aren't regularly in towns they know nothing about, and most people travel 2 weeks per year at most. So for most people this gadget will simply not be useful enough to justify the cost and that's why it will simply flop, just as Vision Pro and Google Glass did. Also, what you showed in the video, looking at pictures or watching movies, will NOT be possible, you will never get a picture that looks as if there would be a TV in front of you. For that you need the fully closed headset of Apple with no light coming in. That's simply impossible with a picture projected into glasses. They could probably get the effect if they find a way to make the part of the lenses that are used as background for the picture opaque, but this opaque region would have to be dynamic, switchable in milliseconds, so the picture would behave realistically when you move your head. There is no such technology. If Google really builds this gadget, they are heading for disappointment, it will be Google Glass all over again
@jackbenk1029Ай бұрын
Exactly that... This promo video is assuming we are regularly in a place we don't know or doing things we don't know how to do. The vast majority of peoples lives are pretty mundane, go to work, pick up kids, make food, watch TV, gym etc...

I don't think so. I guess is an american perspective, but here in Europe we find ourselves in different countries and languages quite ofter. Also, I personally use AI several times a day and having one on my face would help enormously. Most people cook everyday and most of the times dont know what to do, imagine opening your fridge and AI customizing a recipe everyday. One thing you forgot: a lot of people already wear glasses anyway. I do. So, if they make them light, 'normal looking' and comfortable enough why would we not have one with all this extras if we have to wear them anyway? So, I think they are the future, the new smartphones.

Does no one notice how blatantly they’ve ripped off from Apple here? From the video presentation to the way they’re describing how the “headset” is for watching movies and having immersive experiences and the “glasses” are for getting around and augmenting your reality. And the “headset” they showed looks EXACTLY like the Apple Vision Pro! Even the UI and the ability to watch something in a virtual theater. This is basically the keynote that Apple is going to do in the next year or two, except this one is for Android fanboys who are supposed to hate Apple, yet Google are basically giving them Apple products. Yes Apple is always running behind, but they end up gaining the larger market share in each tech category they compete in.

Not really, ideas are never really original at the end of the day. We are all humans apart of humanity and this universe. We are inspired by each other and other things in the universe. Creativity is an iterative process that starts way before you realize you have an idea. Apple was inspired by Meta, Meta was inspired by Occulus and so on. But, also Google was one of the first to make XR glasses almost a decade ago.
@travisgoesthereАй бұрын
hey apple fanboy. Once again your shitty apple is laging behind, but go ahead and pay twice as much for the same stuff everyone else has if it makes you feel good lol
@bta1138Ай бұрын
@ TravisGoesNowhere while completely missing what I said. It is you who has been tricked into liking Apple stuff all along. Google now wants you to see them as an Apple clone. I already said Apple lags behind, so that wasn’t the dig you thought it was. But this was a commercial for future products. They just wanted to beat Apple to the public reveal without actually having a product ready. They’re doing the exact same thing Apple has already produced or are already working on but without innovation.
@bta1138Ай бұрын
@ Of course. But there’s inspiration and then there’s copying. This looked like a nearly 1 to 1 copy. Did you see the headset? Didn’t look like a MetaQuest or their own style. It looked like a Chinese AVP knock-off.
