I met Albert Collins by chance in a Safeway market on Western Avenue and Venice Blvd., in Los Angeles. He lived on Arlington and Pico Blvd., which was about 10-12 blocks from where I lived. What a shock to discover that he lived in the neighborhood. He was a very nice person and invited me over to jam with him and his bassist, Johnny B. Gayden. I saw him just after "Ice Picking" was released at the Whiskey on Sunset. He burned the house down! He had a 300 foot cable on a spool and walked through the club, hit the bar and went out the front door to entertain the people standing in line for his second set. All the time, never missing a note of his solo and never stopping for a second, even when downing the drink that was waiting on the bar for him. Wow!

You guys are nuts Andy has looked that way for over 25 years and can still blow anyone of you off any stage without breaking a sweat and tell what he is doing each note of the way.

Cool lesson. I never knew you interviewed Albert and had played music with him. Every time I hear his name, I picture that big smile he had, he used to look so happy when he played his guitar.

A big part of his sound was his thumb on the bass string so often pulled a tiny grace bass note before he plucks, say, a huge vibrato 7th or root on the 2nd string for instance. Just trying to add to what you've kindly posted, and thanks for that. For me, he was the most moving voice too ... 'if money was trouble ... ' seemed a very lovable guy, I play his stuff all the time.

Amazing way to play! It's like your doing more with less or something? but it's a sweet! It sounds so busy like but looks to be easier? Not sure but I like it.

Actually traditional or standard tuning is an Em7add11 if you hit all the strings open.

I like the tone you're getting! Yes even though it's a Strat that's ok, it's still a good tone! So what is your rig? What amp are you using? How do you dial in your tone knobs etc? Please and thank you for the video! I was lucky enough to see Albert Collins a BUNCH of times when I lived in Houston, back in he day, Great player!
@AndyAledort777 Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much & glad you dig the lesson! I have to admit it’s so long ago I have no idea what the amp was, cuz Guitar World always had different amps in the studio; it might be a reissue blackface Fender Deluxe with an OCD distortion pedal…
@reidsmith87397 жыл бұрын
I don't think i ever saw Albert playing a Strat or using a pick.Playing a Tele with your fingers and also using the ashtray cover will change your sound instantly. How many Tele players ever leave the ashtray on,that's part of the Albert Collins sound. If you want to hear someone that has Albert down,check out Guy King.He gets so close,you think you're listening to AC. Very little of this actually sounded like Albert.I thought that was the point,

to really sound like Albert ditch the plectrum, he used fingers and thumb and sort of snaps the strings

Who "didn't like nobody at all " , AC ? If you're meaning , in your semi-literate manner , Albert - you're full of Texas cow dung. A C let this 17 year old messed up kid ( in 1971 ) into his dressing room at Gassy Jack's Saloon in Vancouver BC with his girls and their bling , called me friend like we were old buds , and asked me to play something for him on my mandolin , and told me to keep on playing all my life .The next night he dedicated " When A Guitar Plays the Blues " from the middle of the dance floor with his extra long patch chord to me - " My friend Ed " - up in the balcony seats ...... but " he didn't like nobody at all " . I was a "nobody " but not to him . He was the most down to earth famous musician ever right on par with Rory Gallagher .

Now, do that with your fingers instead of that pick.... You know, like Albert did.
@rockngpa50942 жыл бұрын
Your capo position isn’t even close to Collins position , try capo on 10th fret I bet you’ll be closer to his tone and don’t be afraid of playing a short neck to illustrate someone tone...
